Sometime in the 80s. Blonde hair. Mate of mine said he played for us and was ex villa and England player. Anyone know he is???

Gary Shaw!!!

He also won the European Cup with Villa.

I think he is one of two players who have played for us who have won the European Cup. Other escapes me, but it's in my mind that there was someone.

Back in those days, a serious knee injury basically ruined a career. Shaw was really rated as I remember (I was only a kid) and his partnership with Peter Withe was a key element of them winning the league.

We also had Colin Gibson for a while in the early 90's. His mum and dad moved in next to my aunt and uncle in Thornton.

We also had Colin Gibson for a while in the early 90's. His mum and dad moved in next to my aunt and uncle in Thornton.
Didn't Gibson not actually play for us. Or maybe only play once?

I think he came in at start of Fat Sam's spell. Could be wrong.

I can remember Gibson playing away at Bournemouth & Chesterfield in the League Cup, didn't stay long that's for sure.

Gary Shaw wore the tangerine shirt but saying he played for us would be pushing it.
Put alongside the likes of McDougall, Willie Morgan, Summerbee.
Bit naughty that Willie,I know he didn't score for us but showed a few flashes of class. You will be putting him in the Kevin Sheedy bracket next!!.

i recall being slightly gobsmacked that the outstanding talent that was gary shaw was turning out for us - in my then 14/15 year old head he had only existed on match of the day and in my panini albums.

i think he arrived because sam ellis was pals with graham taylor who had just taken over at the villa.

as mentioned above, he had a career-wrecking knee injury at just 26 years old when he should have been revelling in his prime. it's always sad to see a career cut short like that, much like our beloved TG.

To be fair I remember he'd been badly injured before joining us. I used to follow Rangers as my second team in the 70's. Remember being excited when Alfie Conn joined us. I'm saying nothing 😉
