FA Cup. We take it very seriously.

Thats the managers view and the owner, so lets hope he puts out a team that can play like it did for most of the second half against Fleetwood. Players to play in their best positions, not stopping to get the ball on their strongest foot, if Connolly plays, needs to be on rhs .
It will be competitive, but Pool should win. The Peterborough owner rates us.

What did he say and how did it come about that he spoke about us?

We are very much a squad club. By that I mean barring a couple of exceptions most players are rotatable and of a similar level.

Certainly it will be a fringe team today and those who aren’t tired out - absolutely should be strong enough to beat Bromley.

Might be an opportunity to be audacious and maybe try a 442 433 formation just to see how we get on it’s a nothing game I’m not bothered if we go out at this stage it’s not really worth much money wise

Money, it all adds up.'it’s not really worth much money wise', If somebody offered you ten quid for posting a letter, would you say no or grab their hand off. i know what I would do.

Sensible rotation needed. Husband for example, 1 booking away from a suspension. Grimshaw not in the best form. I expect to see Lyons, Kouassi, Connolly, Morgan, Tharme. If Norburn is fully fit, he should play also. With no game midweek, there's plenty of time to rest before Bolton.

I don't take the FA Cup seriously. It's just another 90 minutes for players to risk getting injured and jeopardising the Clubs chances in the important matches.
Yes there's an embarrassment factor if you get beat by a non-league team but I'll put up with that if the team gets through it unscathed.
The competition is an outdated product of bygone times that the BBC perpetuates year after year with its "romance of the FA Cup" traditional bollocks. Presumably because it's one of the few things they still have the TV rights to broadcast.

Norburn won't be playing, but it's not next week that's the issue but the one just gone. At kick off time it will be less than 72 hours since they played Fleetwood. Suspect that most of the players that played the full game against Fleetwood will either be rested or put on the bench. Agree with the players you mentioned, but it would do Lavery and Dembele no harm at all to be in from the start. Weir too should feature. The big decision will be Rhodes. His goals and assists are very important - I think we all agree on that, but I think he will be rested. Just hope we don't live to regret that decision if it happens.

I've no idea if Norburn is fit or has travelled. The thought of Morgan, Weir and Oakley-Boothe scares me. Carey needs a rest though and maybe on the 5G pitch against a National League side is a chance for those 3 to find some form. My main worry is how work shy those 3 are.

That Festerlegs post is just wrong and unfair on so many levels. It’s as if you have swallowed whole the Sky bollocks that football was only invented in 1992 with the Premier League.

No I haven't! But I think the FA Cup is one of those traditions that we persist with in this country that is now well past its sell by date. Like them or not you have to move with the times. It's 2023 and the old times weren't the best like many in the UK seem to think.
Yes you get the occasional high. I was there in 1970 when we beat Arsenal 3-2 after being 2-0 down at half time. But it doesn't last. Two weeks later we were out 2-0 at home to Mansfield.
You can tell what many Clubs think about the FA Cup by the number of changes when their team is announced. And the footballing authorities now seem to accept that too. Gone are the days when Clubs were taken to task for allegedly fielding weakened teams.
You might not be saying that at 8 o'clock tonight if God forbid we've got players out injured for weeks.

However since the fortunes gained from the Premier league for the big boys fewer and fewer decent players from those teams turn out compared to the players who used to play in bygone days.
Whatever happened to itv and bbc being taken over on cup final day?
Now it seems like an inconvenience and crammed in @ 5.30 because there's a horse race on or a feature film being shown!!
This afternoon we're playing a team that are professional, if we'd have played the same game 35 years ago they'd have a plumber, 2 binmen, an electrician and a teacher in their team plus a couple of ex pros that are turning out to subsidise their pub takings.
There is NO romance with the fa cup anymore because the bigger, dare I say it, Premier league teams feel its an inconvenience.

Oh, that's until they get to the semi finals then they're all up for the cup🤬

Disagree with this wholeheartedly, give me ‘bygone times’ football any day over the greed and corporatism (may have made that word up😏) of the Premier League and Champions League football.
FA cup very important to me and really hope we get through this round (agree with the unscathed bit!)

IMO Carey, Lavery, CJ and Dembele should start. Confidence is a major factor in team sports and if you asked Carey or Lavery if they wanted to play or have a rest then there would be only one answer. Players want to play matches rather than training. Also, the artificial playing surface demands playing to feet and having pace to use it.

I remember Hartlepool and losing Anderson and Husband. I too want a strong side but not at the expense of key injuries. More so as its an artificial pitch

Damned if you do, damned if you don't. Win, and we were expected to, lose and its a giant killing.
If he picks (rotates) a weak team and we lose, it's Critchleys fault. Pick a strong team and we pick up injuries and bookings, it's Critchleys fault.
He could pick a strong team and we could still lose, it'll be Critchleys fault no matter what.
It's a real conundrum, we're not going to win the FA Cup, but it would be nice to progress a little way in the competition, I'm glad it's not my decision to make.

Not really looking forward to this at all 😬

It's ridiculous that you are comparing football in 1970 to todays game.

No I'm not comparing. Merely giving a famous example from Pools history that I thought you might know.
i do know and was at that game. I was talking overall about the game of football back in the late 60's early 70's to the game as it is today. Football is much more a squad game now than it was back then when it was basically name eleven and one sub.

Yes but I was talking about the general attitude to the Cup rather than how football was played.
Lets just agree that we're both happy that (at present) we're 2-0 to the good.

We play in the Bristol St Motors Trophy on Tuesday night

Yep fair points re NC - being there live, we were lucky - had we scored a third I think they would have caved in - the 1st goal hurt them but they recovered and the 2nd really hurt them and only ht helped them recover

But all the sharpness, guile and attacking quality went 2nd half (Dembele’s nose injury seemed to end his participation - he should have gone off way earlier than he did) and Bromley sensed that and we didn’t get out of own half last 15mins - only dire finishing (the difference between the 2 sides) saved our blushes

I think some of our best qualities were offensively on display first half but there were many average performances too

However we should waltz into the 3rd round from here so the spade work was done

I think you are spot on with those comments, we looked a good side when we were prepared to take the game to them and they couldn't live with the pace we showed offensively.
I thought Demebele was given some pretty rough treatment by their defenders and very little protection. He is incredibly talented, with quick feet and an eye for goal, but he's very small and lightweight, they realised by dishing out a bit of rough stuff they completely nullified his threat.

There were some average performances, I thought Lyons did ok, Marv had a stormer of a second half, but he needed to. I'm still far from convinced by Dale and Connolly should never start before Pennington (although I realise why players were rested).

We rode our luck a bit and if they had scored, which they probably should have done, it could have been a whole lot more awkward. That said, we dealt with what looked a very dodgy tie well enough and the pundits all seemed to think we deserved credit for that.

I hope you are right regarding the next round, I've learned never to take anything for granted watching the 'Pool 😉 👍

£41,000 for winning that game on Saturday plus ticket revenue and TV money - you're probably talking about £60k for one game.

Second round goes up to £67,000. Third round £105,000

If we got to round four you could be talking £350k or similar?

What have 'the times' got to do with anything? The FA Cup is a football knockout competition whereas the League is a round Robin competition. They're both as irrational as each other and they both have a core of rationality. The FA Cup doesn't work for the commercial and State vested interests because the risk of failure is far greater than in a league scenario. If 'moving with the times' demands that I must prefer what big money demands then no, I'll choose my own preferences thanks.

Never really understand why the mega money comes later in the competition when it inevitably goes to teams who use it as petty cash!
