" Fair and Reasonable" pay rises

If one more Tory Minister comes on the TV and talks about "fair and reasonable" pay rises for NHS staff, I'll throw my packet of Werthers at the screen.

MPs get a salary of £84000, plus expenses, while the Health Minister gets another £24000, and the obnoxious Secretary of State for Health an additional £60000.

Now that is neither fair nor reasonable

The sooner these sleazebags are out of office, the better

Wouldn’t matter what party was in power, the wage structure is the same.

Spot on! Most annoying! In their opinion they say the offer is “fair and reasonable”, but obviously NOT in the opinion of junior doctors and consultants! There allegedly have been no constructive talks for more than 100 days! Get off your lazy backside Health Minister and NEGOTIATE a settlement!

As I don’t work in the public sector, I have little knowledge of current pay deals? I can Google gross salary I guess. Is overtime still paid in the public sector?

What is the pension paid for nhs workers? Is it final salary (defined benefits) or money purchase (defined contribution) and at what % do the employer (NHS) pay in?

So what do you think will happen when Labour get in?

Are you expecting they'll all take a 50% pay cut?

Didn’t think there were final salaries anymore in the Public Sector, more like average salaries?

Overtime? That's a joke in both the public and private sector bar the police.

Not for NHS staff.

Their pay's taken a hammering from the Tories, but then they'd really like to get rid of the NHS if they could get away with this, and line the pockets of their backers in the private sector.
In its current form with NHS trusts, boards, directors, managers etc etc , funding the NHS is unsustainable and a major overhaul is much needed. Trouble is no one party has the balls to come out and say that.

You do realise that most MPs claim around £250,000 in 'reasonable' expenses in addition to the salary?

Which is ridiculous

All of this is a drop in the ocean compared to the massive tax avoidance of the US software and corporates, plus the farce of the Covid frauds and HS2.

Reading on here for those who work in the NHS it seems it’s over burdened with massive layers of management and external management consulting?

I was trying to understand what the overall package was inc pensions.

But then do you break it down per hour's work? What about a compensator for stress levels? If manning levels in the NHS were at the levels they should be, might the "package" be more attractive?

seems no-one wants to answer your questions. Is that because no matter how bad this govt are, the answer is still that Labour won't be giving these massive pay rises that all these various unions are demanding be that in the nhs or rail workers or anyone else for that matter. Of course those in power be that red or blue always make sure they themselves are ok.

Be great when Labour get in all these minister taking massive voluntary pay cut’s we could spend the money on something else. 🤣

Have you actually done any of the arithmetic?

Let's say that there are 350 Labour MP's in the next Parliament, and they all take a pay cut of £50k per year. That saves the nation £17.5m each year.

Given the wage bill for the NHS in England is in excess of £170 billion annually, that saving would pay it for about an hour or so.

Nobody takes your points seriously because they aren't serious.

We actually don't pay enough to have decent politicians, that's some of the reason why we end up with the dross we currently have.
I agree. We should be more transparent. A CEO salary for senior ministers and a salary of around £150k for back benchers.
Then reduce the expenses allowance massively. It would cut the horrific corruption and abuse of expenses.

An MP is a significant role and requires skills. We don’t seem to have too many of them now with skills mainly because the attraction is money outside of the job.

Exactly. I always like a good cabinet reshuffle too where MP's who had a role they weren't qualified to do then get moved into another role they know even less about.

And forbid second jobs or "sponsorship / donations"

Unfortunately I`m not sure that is strictly true, Junior; we may end up with the same dross just better paid!

The party machinery may still prefer to choose the likes of Lee Anderson and Jonathan Gullis as candidates, regardless of having the option of more "decent" people. Depends what the party is looking for in a candidate, really.

"Decency" seems to be a little passe at the moment...

It's a disgrace. My sadly departed lovely wife worked as a care worker for 30 years. She worked 60 hours a week with 2 sleep overs. Cleaning people with dementia, working with ex sex offerenders who were highly medicated, also looking after 4 other guys with severe learning difficulties. You know what I cannot recall her ever once moaning. She come out with around £1,350 per month. I'm quite financially secure so often said please give up work. But no she wouldn't, even when going through chemotherapy she still went out and stayed and looked after these poor people. So pardon my French the government can go and fuck themselves. They are and have been doing for many years running the working class into the ground. I don't know the answer but again fuck em. I'm so angry and dissallusioned with them all. Conservative labour social Democrats the lot of them.

i see your reply to Jaffa quotes "points" plural. Seems to me you only addressed one of his points and no-one has actually yet answered the first point he made.

Not a lot will happen as regards pay for the public sector. Conditions might improve. They might stop the closing of Train Ticket Offices ,more Nurses. more Doctors possibly. It can't be any worse.

I am not sure the party whips and constituencies want too many bright independent-minded strong people. That’s why they seem to select the sheeplike candidates that they do, ones who will slavishly adopt the party line. I’d like to see more independent MPs but the system marginalises them, they do not have the campaigning resources.

Probably not, but I'm pretty sure there will be far more investment in the infrastructure rather than the selling off of everything we've had for the last 13 years.

I think most in the public sector would want that, to be supported and valued rather than slagged off as enemies of the 'people'.

yes, agree but would go back much more than 13 years. Some things should never have been privatised.
