Fleetwood v Blackpool EFL Trophy Official Matchnight Thread 08.12.20

To be fair we didn’t have a striker out there tonight.

but the crux of tonight and goal threat and the lack there of was the switch back to 433. Critch is itching for it to work, but it just doesn’t give us any attacking thrust.

When we’ve played two up top with Yates, Madine, CJ and Kai Kai we have looked dangerous.

All I’d say is just let 433 go Critch, just let it go.
Let it go until we have the attacking player/s who can nail it.

And we didn't have a striker in the team tonight, so it wasn't likely to produce goals.

The old 'fact' defence! ;-)

Yes we do lack enough of a goal threat, I agree. But it's not about the penalties we took, we mainly lost them because of the keeper being too easy to beat.

We've won 8 of out last 10 games so maybe balance the negativity a bit?
It’s not the fact defence, it’s just an indisputable fact. We don’t score enough, ref the minus goal difference, if we have another game like Ipswich the minus will just get worse. We need to score more and I just don’t see who will do it.

Was that Sims 2nd game as a professional? Two clean sheets?
3rd came on against Accy last season played about 60 minutes.

He actually played well in that game against a good League One side and only
Conceded in injury time after some piss poor defending.

However that’s not the reason people are point things out.

Much like Thorneily who’s not played too many games for us, his awareness looks poor, his technique and execution playing out from the back puts the defenders in trouble more or less every time and when crosses come into the box he honestly looked scared tonight and didn’t leave his line.

I can’t see him being with us past this season.

Of the players that featured tonight that are currently outside the first team only Garbutt would threaten the first eleven in my opinion.

But we've gone from negativity about results to negativity about goals scored. Some people can never temper their negativity with a bit of balanced reality. We are a work in progress and we are winning games. We didn't even lose tonight. Another comfortable clean sheet away from home. See, there are major positives to talk about too!

Yes I agree,

But I do wonder if it can ever work with the standard of player you can sign in league one. Because we did recruit with this formation in mind.

I think there’s a lot of pressure on these lads that don’t experience regular first team play and then get thrown on the pitch for cup games like this, or any game to be honest.
We’ve all seen how players benefit in confidence and bonding the more game time they have.
It’s a lot of pressure when you haven’t had that for a while.

Pool definitely short up top. Madine and Yates will score a few but I wouldn't describe them as clinical or prolific goalscorers. Lubala and Sarkic have been a disappointment. Hopefully, Critchley will get it right in January.

I think it can. Other teams are playing it. Our forward play still isn't coming together, we have deficiencies. CJ is quick but doesn't pick out other players well. Kaikai drifts out of games too much. Lubala still learning. Woodburn still not up to speed. Nobody in the squad can play the middle striker of three role. The 442 helps us a bit with our player options but it's still not leading to many goals.

I thought Lubala had easily his best game tonight and hopefully he can carry that on if comes on as sub in the next few games.
Sarkic isn't a centre-forward but probably not good enough to get in our midfield at the moment so it's hard to see where he fits in.
Interesting to see Mitchell switched from left-back to right-wing - that might put some of our defensive performances in the first few games in perspective.
Robson and Virtue did well but Williams is naturally too deep for me. Often he's taking the ball behind the centre-halves which means we're short in midfield after the forward pass. You don't see Dougall taking the ball there. Not a big deal but I'd be surprised if that's where Critchley wants him.

Overall, two tidy performances against a team that looks like their training regime involves running endlessly between cones and then belting the ball dead hard at one another at the end of the session.

Just stop being so negative especially with the run we are on, give yourself a break and enjoy watching this team evolve over time, we have already taken giant strides as a club as well as a team in such a short space of time. Nobody can be bought till Jan I am sure a striker will be on the top of our wish list.

Yes that’s very true, a back up keeper must be a lonely place at times. However that’s the modern game. Unfortunately it does look like Simms has not been given enough experience to breed that confidence. Again a poor development from the modern game.

How any professional footballer can get to nearly 22 and have only played 34 pro games is a sad indictment.

I was wondering if any other teams were succeeding with this style.

In fairness you might be right, if we have a proper pre season with a more settled squad to develop play like tonight’s first half you may be right.

Next season we need to trim and balance the squad slightly better and it may work.

decent first half probably should have put the game to bed to be honest. The movement of anderson along with robson and Virtue, was really good to watch. Luballa had a decent game. was a bit disapointed with Sarkic he had one good moment maybe. Kemp couldnt really get into the game propperly. Thorniley likes to make a pass to put his team mates into trouble, two full backs both played well. Turton was solid as a central defender untroubled all night.

second half with Williams on for Virtue we lost some of our bite and some of our forward thinking. lost some shape. when Anderson went off we lost the attacking momentum. all got a bit scrappy and pointless.

pens - hey ho.

good to see though a very solid player with maybe two exceptions in every position.
Couldn't have said it better myself. In Thornileys defence, I thought he had a better game tonight than we've seen of him previously.

Agree about Williams. I guess there are games where someone sitting deep like that can be handy, but not often, the way we are playing. Robson was better early in the season than now, bit I still think he and Dougall are the strongest pairing.

I must admit im liking the idea of Jordan Williams next to Dougall.I think they could compliment each other.I take the above point about Williams coming deep but I just think Williams keeps the ball moving which gives us a tempo of sorts. You rarely see Williams take many touches in the middle he gets the ball off straight away and he has the range to find the wide players aswell.

Now that the decision of the messageboard is pretty unanimous that we need to bring Armand back, or his equivalent, we will of course have to bring a striker in in January.
It's is of course tough on the likes of Thorniley, Sarkic and Sims who probably won't get to play a competitive match for the rest of the season now we are out of the Pizza Cup because regular football is the only way they will improve.
And as others have said " where was Howe" ?

Don’t bring the club into it. Not once on any post have I criticised the club since SS took over. The team yes, when I think things can be improved I will say so. But I take exception if anyone insinuates I am criticising the club in any way.

Very wise words. Needs taking into account, some are too quick to judge.

Spot on.

Positives are most of the squad are comfortable on the ball, good pressing first half especially and played as a team in spite of host of changes.
Negatives poor finishing, allowed ourselves to be bullied a little second half and a couple of players clearly not L1 standard.
I would not worry too much about the penalties as the match should have been won well before then

I think lubala has improved with each game and can look dangerous, a run of games and he would settle in.
Virtue is a definite shout, first game back and was the most conspicuous midfielder for the first 45 minutes. Combatative and often got the ball forward with some clever passes. I think him and dougall would be perfect midfield pairing. Leadership qualities in him too.

If I was Alex Fojticek, I’d be wanting out.
He must be fit enough to be on the bench, yet can’t displace Sims as no.2 keeper. United must have seen something in him. 🤔

Thank God for Gary Goals and Yates. 👏 👏

Keeper and striker needed in January. As if we didn’t already know.

I'd have Mafoumbi back

Quite. If we win every game 1 0 we'll have a positive goal difference 😉

It’s a timely reminder of the glaring squad deficiencies. Underlines the point ahead of the transfer window opening.
I think that's a bit of an exaggeration. The only deficiency we have is one or even 2 more strikers and a goalkeeper which it has already been stated by Critch would be covered by an emergency loan.

It’s clear that most of the 2nd team can step in and be relied on to do a good job. There are a few which don’t look like they will make the grade in LG1, let alone step up to the next level. A loan out and a chance to prove themselves in January?

Not many who can't function in L1. Sarkic already did last season. Thorniley has actually placed about 20 games in the Championship iirc.

For me Dougall and Williams is very boring and solid and exactly what we need. Robson was great early doors but I’d be benching him.

Not bothered about the result at all, even though it was keenly contested.
Little more than a Ressies game, albeit in a defrocked competition.

Ony negatives I can see are, it might have helped them be match fit, if needed for the 1st team, and progress in the competition, would give them something extra to look forward to, had they won.

Considering that most players out there were not our current first choice and considering Barton was busy throwing on experienced campaigners as he couldn't face two defeats on the trot, I think we did pretty well. A good workout for Virtue, "Balala", and the rest. I like Kemp, I think he'll be a really good option in time.

I noticed that they just blast out Motown at the cods pre game. Some old duffer living out his youth on the PA. No wonder the attendences are so pitiful.

Sweet Caroline on now. FFS. Tragic.

Oh and now electric dreams for the home team.

Is this match in 1982? Ruddy pa man probably has a mullet and a Duran Duran poster
Electric Dreams is Andy Pilleys choice for players coming out to, apparently he runs a company that supplies Electricity to various companies, shops etc etc, here to help!!

Yeah well I'm guessing he provides the whole playlist because it certainly wasn't aimed at young folk.
