Fleetwood v Blackpool EFL Trophy Official Matchnight Thread 08.12.20

We've a 20 and 21 year old as back up keepers at that age in general they are still learning and need to put some man strength on which comes with age.

I'm not overly concerned with the position Simms is being used as the homegrown player that has to be on your bench and only if Maxwell gets injured will be used and that will be until an emergency loan is got and goalkeepers seem to be easy to pick up.

Another striker is a must now that's a lot harder.

Didn't see or listen to the game, but it seems obvious me to me that if Maxwell gets injured during or just before a game (an emergency loan is poss in the days running up) then the potential of 3 points lost could be disastrous. We should have a competent No 2.

He's a young lad in development. Not hard to understand!

Fojticek, no googling required!

Grrrr!!!
Nope missed the lines over the I and C😂
He's been brought in as third choice as why would you put him on the bench above Sims then have to lose an outfield player for the homegrown rule.
Sims had to play last night.

Ideally yeah but there are factors like salary cap, squad size limit, U21 players, and home grown player to consider. Without those I'm sure we would have kept Mafoumbi or something. If only to keep GJJW happy.

‘Twas a joke’ but I get seeing humour in my posts is difficult when you have read my posts through the prism of troublemaking 🤨

He needs to play to develop. He isn’t playing at all. I expect he was signed as Critchley wanted a bit of competition to improve Symmes and it’s not worked out.

I realised it was a joke but you've now added an explanation that shows it wasn't just a joke, as I suspected. Truth/jest. 🤣

Keepers tend to not play much unless they are the first choice. It's how it works. You seem to have decided it's not worked out - why not drop NC a line and point it out? Ha ha.

The B side really get a B grade there.

Simms isn’t a League One standard keeper.

Turton, Garbutt and Gabriel are all very talented and the latter two could easily be first team starters.

Thorniley is done with us, his basic defensive awareness is appalling.

Williams and Robson look very comfortable on the ball and can both put a tackle in and pick a pass respectively. They can count them selves unfortunate we have such an abundance of good players in midfield.

Anderson appears to have bags of talent but I’m not sure we know what to do with him, I feel a tad sorry for him.

Good to see Virtue back.

Kemp, still don’t understand this signing, could have kept Shaw and developed him.

Bez, actually looks promising a season long loan somewhere might do him good.
..
Sarkic is an enigma, looks like he should have all the physical attributes but doesn’t, does have a good touch and composure but can’t seem to get going. Bit of a head scratcher.
I couldn't agree more

Certainly an, err, oversight when assembling the squad in the summer and something I'm expecting 100% will be resolved in Jan.

I don't think it was an oversight, I think it was a considered decision. They may decide to change tack, may not - it's about balancing the cap and the squad limit etc. Why pay for a decent second keeper who hardly ever plays if you can bring in an emergency? It's a slight gamble but the cap is pretty tight.

Voy, we are paying for quite a few who hardly ever play. Whether they get minutes or not doesn't matter as it won't cost 3 points.

And when you consider the scientific nature that everything is examined by it makes no sense not to have a No 2 keeper. None.

I am aware that reserve keeers don’t get much game time but you’d expect in a match like last night for both keepers to get 45mins each. Which is why I think either Critch really thinks Simes is up to it or he thinks Prontoprint is not up to it.

Maxwell could get injured and be out.
He could be sent off and be out.
He could contract Covid and be out.
A family member could contract it and he would be out.
We need someone who is 'oven ready' (yawn) to step in and be an assured presence in goal.

I'm disputing the 'none' bit. The professionals at the club assessed it in the summer and decided it did make sense. Maybe they need to start paying you for professional advice? 😉

The professionals were wrong. And I'm like a stick of rock me, cut the top of my head off and you'll find Blackpool FC all the way though.

They can have my advice for free 😉

Sims counts as youth team player on bench, we are allowed to get an emergency loan if needed whom is likely to better than anyone prepared to be a no.2, worst that can happen part of a game where Maxwell gets injured or sent off.

That's the point. When you do all this analysis and you leave a possible 3 points to chance
If we get a cheap no.2 may as well keep Sims, if you go for an expensive no.2 then the money they takes from the rest of the squad more likely to cost us points than any likely injury to the keeper. If he get sent off chances are we would lose that game anyway. Makes complete sense to rely on an emergency loan/experienced keeper when needed.

Perhaps there's a reason why every world cup squad, every euro finals squad, every CL squad name 3 keepers (maybe not so much in the CL). Why don't they select 2 and have an extra outfield player? Answer- percentages. And that what we should have done.

Nothing to do with money, salary caps, squad size, but failure to balance the squad from the off. Madine fgs was surplus at one point.🙄

I’m quicker than Sims as I just proved a minute ago. Opened the cupboard and 3 items fell out from the top shelf. Caught the sauce bottle in my right hand.
Caught the Oxo cubes in my left hand.
Trapped the pasta sheets with my knee.
Nothing hit the floor or went under my dive. 😬

World Cup squads are required to name 3 keepers.

Football isn't played in cupboards, or clipboards, it's played on grass 😉
