Nasty crash on first corner for Grosjean.
Car looked like it exploded upon impact with the barriers
Very scary, but luckily he's ok
 
Always been a bit cliquey the Formula 1 especially with regards to the UK, although they did ditch the rather pretentious Brands 'atch for Silverstone which is at least near civilisation.

Would be great to have it around Blackpool with a chicane around Oxford Circus maybe, re-instate the 'Ferodo brakes' sign on the St Annes Road rail bridge and end up with a dash towards Stanley Park gates for the chequered flag.
 
The car broke in two on impact, and it looks like he’s got away with a broken rib or two. These cars have come a long way with regards to safety
 
The halo has without a doubt saved that mans life there. How he walked away with just minor injuries is quite astonishing.
 
The only similar crash I can remember where a car split in half and exploded was John Watson at Monza in 81, he walked away from that as well.
 
I was amazed he survived that, especially as the car split in two on the barrier, as well as the explosion and fire
 
Full tank of fuel as well as the race has just started. F1 cars are designed to absorb as much of the impact as possible and usually fall apart but that was horrendous and goes to show all the amazing engineering that goes on in F1 and is usually only seen in incidents like this. He's a very lucky boy.
 
He’s a very lucky guy. For all the safety advances since the bad old days, if he’d have lost consciousness on impact I doubt he’d have survived that.
 
Yeah all saying the halo stopped his helmet / head going through the metal barrier. Still a miracle he's walked out of that. Hope his burns are not too bad. Credit the F1 doctors too who waded in far too close to ensure Grosjean got out of what was left of his car.

Watching it live I was like holy shit that is really not good. It was weird because the commentators carried on describing the race for quite a few seconds whilst the viewer was like WTF has just happened.
 
Circuits needs improving. Needs tyre barriers even along straights after first few corners. Thats where issues may be after a tight start.

Bit ironic the Halo saved him and he was against the Halo being installed to the cars.

Just going off what RG said in hospital ,I did'nt know all the drivers were against it ,I bet they are'nt now ,saying that there has been a couple of occasions when the Halo has saved drivers from more serious injury.

A few things jump out.

It was always likely to be him.

If that was me, I doubt I would ever get in a car again.

Halo stopped a decapitation. I was unsure about its introduction. I was wrong.

The technical innovations by some of the finest engineers on the planet, made up for human error.

I wish we had the same focus on safety in the NHS as we do in F1. They will go into every minute detail to work out whether they can improve the safety of the car, the barrier, the process; everything. Then won't look to cover their arses. How can we do similar in public life?

We use 'miraculous', but it wasn't devine intervention. He survived because of the relentless focus of F1 and the FIA. Every credit to the giants on which shoulders F1 drivers stand.

How the hell did he get driver of the day??? 🤣
