Gareth Southgate has told Calvin Phillips...................

Personally I don't think he is yet good enough to play for his Country, especially when he can't get a starting place in the City squad but, regardless of that, is Southgate being somewhat hypocritical or is it just favouritism?
I'm referring to a player on the other side of Manchester who, unless I'm mistaken, has started just 3 league games and 1 EFL Cup game this season. Maybe Southgate classes that as regular first team football though.

If he has the same rule for the rest of the squad the next one will look very different.

Of course that's how football works, managers don't have favourites and pick a team completely fairly and squarely and are straight down the line 🙄
Feel sorry for Maguire, once again he's played, not let England down and he still gets shit and on a thread that's not even about him.
Model pro and just gets on with it despite the criticism .

I can only assume he hasn’t said it as a point of principle to all players, but just what Phillips himself needs.
Perhaps he thinks Maguire playing in a different position and with tons more domestic and international experience will be OK?
Relatively I thought Maguire looked much the more comfortable of the two on Tuesday.
Personally I think they could both do with a loan or permanent move in January for their own good, because they are not at the right clubs for their own personal development at the moment, and England have a big tournament in the summer.

Southgate takes loyalty to extremes and he does differentiate between players. I agree with him but that's simply down to my own views of Phillips as a player. And we have alternatives. Maguire, has had a torrid time for club and I don't think he's particularly been well treated by Ten Hag who just like Sancho has made it pretty clear that they don't have a future under him at Man U. Again, just my view but I'd still retain Maguire in the England squad as we are not blessed with too many alternatives that we know can step up. Remember he'd already discarded Dunk once and both Guehi and Colwill have still a lot to prove at the top level of International football. Something which Maguire has already done. It certainly wouldn't do Maguires international career any harm though to move to a club where he is ginna get more game time.

He'd probably have to take a pay cut and as he still gets picked for England I don't think he's in a hurry to leave United.
There's also a chance that Ten Hag could be moved on before Maguire!

To be honest Maguire plays better in an England shirt than he does for Man Utd. Hasn’t really let us down

you're probably right. Think ETH has destroyed Maguire's confidence. I think it's a trait of some managers that when they arrive at a club they seemingly have to make an example of one of the big players there in order to stamp their own authority. Mourinho, Conte for example. Maybe ETH is another because although he seemed at one point to have turned their fortunes round it's been pretty much all downhill so far this season.

Philips could do worse than a loan to Bayern or somewhere like that to get proper game time and further his football education. I enjoyed his interview after the game, he came across as very humble and realistic.

Players seem to think that when they sign for City they've made it. Unfortunately they become a small fish in a very big pond and their game suffers. Grealish is another one, he doesn't seem to be the same player that he was at Villa.

This first team football necessity depends on a number of factors, not least the position and the players training attitude. Don't think you can get away with lack of matches in midfield, but as a striker, a keeper or wide defenders I think you can.

So there shouldn't be a blanket approach imo.

Strange isn't it that Maguire plays better for England than he does under Andy Parsons. Desire a part, or a sense of belonging? If it's the latter utd top bods should be a bit worried.

Can you please point out exactly where in my post I have given Maguire "shit"
I was questioning Southgate's decision to tell Phillips that he needed more playing time or he wont be included in the Euro squad next year.
Maguire hasn't played in 50% of Utd's games so surely that meets the same criteria?

Sorry that came across wrong and aggressive towards your post.
I just think managers will always have favourites and trust players who have performed for them in the past and Maguire has more credit in the bank than Phillips.

It's not as simple as you're making out. There's an abundance of talent to pick from in midfield - Southgate is spoilt for choice but that isn't the case in defence which is why Maguire has managed to keep his place. Between now and the Euros Southgate needs to be giving opportunities to other players in defence to try and get competition for places. Searching defensive players out I would suggest, should be his top priority.

Maybe he will do that now qualification has been guaranteed?
His instinct might be to give Maguire as much game time as possible to compensate for what he doesn’t get at ManU though?

Both Maguire and Phillips would be far better moving to other clubs for their mental health as much as game time. But ManU and ManCity have them in golden handcuffs; other clubs seem not to want to match those wages.

So they will decline in the reserves while running down their contracts losing a good part of their careers. It’s a shame and another bad aspect of the Sky Payola Prem.
