GAS/ELECTRIC standing charges?

I noticed my electricity charge, as you all will, has risen from around 12.8p per kw/hr to 28p, but why has my standing charge risen from 19p per day to 42p per day? the wires & infrastructure have not got more expensive?

Same for gas too

I don’t know how people will sustain working from home next winter. It will cost a bloody fortune to heat a home day in day out.

As for your standing charge, I had an increase a while back but don‘t think mine as increased again with this price cap thing.

I never worked from home , but for those that did , my employer paid a contribution towards electric , gas , broadband and house insurance , which of course will go up when you work from home . Some even got charged business rates if part of the house was being used as an office , and they also helped with that extra cost .

Thats good 👌
I think our guys got £6.00 a week and that may have stopped now 🥴
Sounds like it very much depends on your employer.

I don't know how people afford travel to the office, have you seen the price of petrol and public transport 🤣 bet its still cheaper to stay put.

Standing charges really should be scrapped. Their only purpose is to muddy the waters when trying to make comparisons. Not that that matters very much now with most people on the standard variable rate, but still.

It was £6 extra a week tax free, so £1.20 a week in your pocket.

What you can do is claim actuals, and that will include all relevant expense as a proportion of house space and days worked.

It would be worthwhile as it will make it above the basic rate. Businesses should be paying a contribution though as they are making material savings on estate costs and the associated utility costs.

My employer designated me an "agile" worker some years ago, stopped the additional internet service, & made me use my own service provider, required me to insure their equipment in my home, did away with my office, (however there are many touchdown centres around the county) refused to pay for any electricity, gas, or additional insurance costs..... I did however apply to HMRC for additional expenses, they initially said no, & the example I used to prove my expenses was unrealistic, until I pointed out it was an example they had on their own website (muppets).... I am PAYE, so none of this self employed, claim for bog roll & everything else etc...

That was about 7yrs ago, so recently I tried to update the costs, ie Electricity/gas/Council Tax etc, rather than redo what I had already agreed with HMRC, they were aresoles, & asked me to start again, with a letter from my employer confirming, I HAD to work from home, eventually I gave up & left it as it is (which is better than the £6 per week, but they wernt helpful at all, & I pay their wages!!! 🤣

I’m surprised this hasn’t had more publicity tbh. People will of necessity cut back on usage to try and control their bills but they can’t escape paying the standing charge and once again it’s the least well off disproportionately affected. Regardless of whether you’re in a bed sit or a mansion with heated swimming pools you’ll pay the same standing charge

This was a question on a money programme a few weeks back. The standing charge is to cover network improvements. Because not all properties have gas and to ensure fairness (?) the standing charge for electric took the big increase.

Network improvement or shareholder dividends? 🤔
