Goal conceded which hurt the most

Vaz Te's late goal in our 2-1 playoff defeat to West ham, after Howard Webb failed to award a blatant free kick for a foul on Tom Ince. Massively against the run of play, but in hindsight a result for us in the long term because we eventually got rid of the stains.

As Wizaard beat me to it, another goal that's always stuck in my mind was Jermaine Defoe's late equaliser at White Hart Lane. I thought we were going to hang on for a precious 1-0 win which at the time I thought would go a long way to keeping us up

Vaz Te's goal bothered me and didn't at the same time.

I knew that it was the beginning of the end, that players would be sold and not replaced and we'd end up back in League One. That bothered me. The fact he'd scored a late winner in the play off final didn't bother me because it meant the greedy bastards wouldn't pocket another massive wad of cash.

nowhere near for me. Even if we'd won we still couldn't win our final game so we'd have gone down anyway. Last minute equaliser at Blackburn in PL which ultimately cost us our place in PL. If we don't go down Vaz Te's goal wouldn't have happened.;)
It’s probably not correct to say that the Chesterfield result would have been the exact same if we had beaten Oldham.
But yeah, can’t see past that late Oldham goal which sent us down. Always had a strong dislike towards Oldham since that day. More to do with their fans more than anything.

Agreed - we should have had a free kick but the ref gave them a free kick from memory, long punt up field by the goal keeper, Kingson flap and that was that when we'd looked like getting the 3 points. Was gutted.

But it doesn't change the fact that even if we'd beaten Oldham there was still a lot to do and no guarantees that we'd have won our last game. We went down because we weren't good enough to stay up.

I agree. Leaving Ewood after that game I thought that result would haunt us. Also Blackburn were on a bad run and a defeat would have put big trouble on them as their manager was under pressure.

At the time, Tottenham away in prem, Charlie blasted a pen home with about 10 mins to go, 1-0 then in the last minute, Defoe let loose a 30yard blunderbus the twatt, remember all our players sank to their knees at the final whistle gutted. I still maintain we’d have stayed up if we’d had took all 3points.

the thing about that game is that we still had a few opportunities to win it even after Defoes equaliser.

Huddersfield 1968 when we ran on the pitch to celebrate promotion back to the top flight.
News filtered through that Aston Villa had conceded a last minute own goal and QPR promoted on goal average.
I tell you that QPR not only have a habit of buying our players for a bargain but have a hoodoo on us!

Dare I mention Sunderland in 1974.

Puncheon really should have scored, for one.

I also think that Gilks went down in instalments for Defoe's shot.

Any of David Eyres goals against us...
Mickey Mellon for Burnley at Turf Moor.after we'd been giving him stick all game...He scored a screamer late on & ran towards us all to give stick back.

Beat me to it 20s, and what made it worse was GTF trying to run down the clock in the corner and getting the shit kicked out of him by two Blackburn players only for the ref to award a free kick to Blackburn which resulted in the equaliser 😡

All goals against hurt

The Utd winner, Oldham away West Ham and also some of the embarrassing FA Cup defeats

Altrincham, Yeovil etc

But looking back they were all under the Oystons when we weren't a 'proper' football club

This season we are

So any goal against now hurts more for me as its like we are starting again....

At the time it was Vaz Te, a clusterfuck of bad, we should have been ahead, we had no time to come back, it was West ** Ham, it was Fat ** Sam. I couldn't care less now though.

The worst miss was Bamber's back pass to the corner flag penalty. That was a shitty day.

Ian Evatt’s own goal at Old Trafford. It was game over and he didn’t deserve to be the one to the the final nail in our coffin

Bradfords 3rd in 1996. Horrific evening.

Then got back to the car to find a flyer on the windscreen from someone selling coach travel to Wembley......

The Bolton Sherpa Van game definitely stung a bit.

Another one to add to the list, not actually a goal conceded but a penalty miss... Dave Bambers miss against Torquay in 1991. That was a hell of a long journey home on the slowest Abbots coach ever.

Ryan Sugden for me. Convinced we'd have had the motivation to beat Chesterfield in our last home match. I think Oxford lost at Millwall in their last game so they would have gone down instead.

Vaz Te; as said above, no way we should have lost but knew the only way was down at that point due to the the regime in place.

Everton away in the prem was painful too after leading 3-2 with only 13 minutes to go!

☹️

The Prem season had a few... Blackburn away, Villa away, United at home, City at home after we'd just scored, Bolton away... such a brutal league.

Mine have all been said. Sugden was my first relegation, but it felt inevitable by that time. Vaz Te and Hoilett were shitters.

Notice no one's saying Tom Clarke for PNE. We'd really stopped giving a shit by that point hadn't we? It's adorable that they still celebrate it like it was a massive upset win against their deadly rivals though. I only know Clarke's name cos a nobber mentioned it to me at a wedding last year.

I don’t know if I’m remembering the score and teams correctly, but I do remember kicking a hole in my bedroom wall and got a severe rollicking from my Mum and Dad. If I’ve remembered correctly it was the no goals that hurt me the most. Orient 0 Cardiff 0, giving them a point each to stay up and send us down.

Being behind the goal in the south when Berbatov scored the winner for Man Utd, was gutted especially after the stone wall penalty was denied and we'd outplayed them to be 2-0 up.

There were so many games like this in the Prem that I look back at and think about how fine the margins were. United at home, Rovers scoring late against us home and away, getting beat by Wigan, Birmingham and West Ham at home. We had safety in our hands that year and threw it away.

So true, but that Defoe goal was so close to the end of the season 180mins in fact, it was just soul destroying.
