Hancock

Hancock seems particularly sleazy and unashamedly so.
Whenever he is put on the spot he either laughs in a strangely manic way or gets outraged that anyone could question an decent upstanding man like himself who is just trying to do his best.
I think that sleaze will end up being the defining factor in the Johnson government. We could spend years just investigating the contracts dished out during the Covid crisis, let alone other things like the Acuri affair (not sure why this isn't a bigger story tbh). It looks like the press have got their teeth into it and will not let go. As some have suggested I think that David Cameron will be scapegoated for as much as can be loaded onto him regarding Greensill, but Matt Hancock may have to go too. Sunak is also behaving like he has something to hide. Plenty of mileage in this.

There’s a culture ingrained in certain people that sees this as totally normal. Same as Cameron with his lobbying and all those expenses cases where it’s blatantly obvious that public money has been abused for individuals gain.

But if you want high quality politicians then you need to offer pay and benefits that attracts the best...🙄

Nothing to see here - as he said he acted entirely properly. Just like he did when his mate who runs his local pub got that PPE contract without having any prior experience.
The usual politics of envy from the leftists.

If anything it shows the incompetence of Labour there own government in Wales is responsible for the NHS there and awarded the contract so it is unlikely Cronyism came into it
Its Labour's fault that the Secretary of State for Health and his sister are filling their boots at our expense. OK.

It is either the National London based Labour party attacking its own Welsh Government over the awarding of the contract or The Labour controlled NHS in Wales not doing enough due diligence on the contract and not awarding it to the best company for the Job, Hancock does not come out of it well but Labour are worse.

Hancock is a sleaze ball and wouldn’t trust him. However, the company in question is on NHS Framework of Suppliers so they are not the sole supplier and will still have to quote/tender for the work. My company is on many NHS Frameworks and some we get business from and some we get nothing. At least in this instance the Framework will be put under proper scrutiny as sometimes they aren’t.

"A Department of Health source said Mr Hancock had discussed the fact he was to be gifted shares in the firm with civil servants before he accepted them.
Having been reminded by Hancock that their bonuses - and possibly their jobs - depended on their public response to this cronyism they ruled that if any conflicts of interest were to arise, they could be quickly swept under the carpet.
The department also said the health secretary had no active role in running Topwood, and as health secretary for England, he had no responsibility for NHS Wales beyond that of slagging it off at every opportunity in the Commons, along with the rest of his corrupt Tory tribe."

3rd choice, maybe they were the best company for the job and everything else is just co-incidence.

"Let he who hath no sin cast the first stone."

We are so fortunate to have on here a group of infallible posters who lead such pure flawless lives. No hypocrisy there eh chaps! 🙄

Well considering none of us are publicly elected officials or cabinet members responsible for billions of pounds of public money I'm not sure that's relevant.

Had we misappropriated public money I'm sure we'd be open to the same criticism. Did you make the 'none of us are perfect' argument for the Oystons as well?

So you are saying that none of us (you included) are ever entitled to give comment on other people`s misdemeanours, because we may have transgressed at some point in our life?

Makes it rather difficult to discuss things on here, don`t you think?

Like Lytham says, there is a difference between pinching a disabled parking spot and possibly being involved in misappropriation of hundreds of thousands of taxpayer`s money...

Although people who park in disabled spaces should be shot on sight.

The fact that many knee jerk critics haven`t achieved public office or significant status in society just means that they don`t have much scrutiny on their own lives and their own behaviour but does that mean they have no flaws or are less fallible than those they criticize?

That seems a little improbable, much more likely that their constant seizing of every opportunity to criticize those who don`t happen to share their more popularly held political views is depressingly self righteous and hypocritical .

That might be different in scale but not in morality.

Some, and we have our share on here, prefer to CONSTANTLY snipe from the sidelines with little constructive or positive content whilst making little effort to set a worthwhile example in their own lives which is extreme hypocrisy.

Anyway I`m now off for my second Covid jab for which I am extremely grateful for the efforts of all those who`ve made it possible both for me and many millions more. It`s good to appreciate the good things in this country of which there are very many.Enjoy and appreciate them.

So you forgave the Oystons because none of us are perfect?

Also, who the fuck are you to imagine the sins of others?

This reminds me of the joke about the Jewish Kamikaze pilot.

He crashed his plane on his brothers scrap metal yard!!!!!

There are extremes of behaviour as per the Oystons which I like many others did speak out against but some like you spend their life sourly, generally using foul language, full of envy, resentment ,complaints, abuse and chips on their shoulders just because the great majority in our democracy don`t happen to share your views.

As for the sins of others it`s not hard to recognize that there are not too many saints in this world,we all err at times and are all flawed to a lesser or greater degree and you with your frequent condemnations of others are very keen to emphasise that, unless you imagine that you or any who happen to agree with you are somehow flawless.

Jesus wept.

The company in question: https://www.topwoodltd.co.uk

Document scanning/shredding storage company, based in Wales and presumably most of the business is in that area.

Based on the accounts I'd estimate £2m - £3m turnover per annum and perhaps £100k or so profit (depending upon directors' remuneration levels).

Turning to the ownership, Mr Hancock acquired the shares from a Mr & Mrs Carter, who acquired those shares when the company was formed, and who have thus held them for about 20 years.

Mrs Shirley Carter is Mr Hancock's mother.

The precise details are unknown to me but I suspect that Mr Hancock's role is occasional advice and to act as a casting vote in the event that his sister and her husband can't agree and I suspect that Mr Hancock receives little if any income from this shareholding.

So to summarise, a very small company with a small involvement with the NHS, the Secretary of State has properly declared the shareholding, receives no benefit from it, has no influence over Welsh NHS purchasing decisions (their primary geographical area) and no day to day involvement in English procurement.

If this is what passes for a scandal in this country then we are indeed blessed and should praise Boris and his government to high heaven.

"Let he who hath no sin cast the first stone."
When Jesus said that, a woman forced her way to the front of the crowd and threw a brick, hitting Jesus square in the face.
He picked himself up and said “Sometimes you really piss me off, mum!”

Ber-dum-tish!!

With all due respect I actually laughed at loud at this! You really don't believe any of this do you LOL!??

Or did you have a Tory brain implant that renders you incapable of balanced thought and reason? It reads like a Tory Bot. In fact they'd probably love to have you. Crackers.

There are some right tuggers on display on this thread if they think elected politicians creaming off public money, telling us that austerity is necessary, whilst feathering their own nests is forgivable ?
Then again, plenty of people thought the Nazis weren’t that bad at the time either.

Cameron will ultimately pay for all the Greensill wrongs.
The media will not have forgotten his part in the Brexit referendum and the chaos thereafter

It might not be suspicious if he had owned the shares for years but it does not look good that he only acquired them last March. Very dodgy.

They just think there’re above the law & because they see themselves as part of the establishment it’ll all blow over. The ** sad thing is it probably will.

Not really.

And it is likely there will be more to come.

What is somewhat surprising is that ordinary working people continually have their pants pulled down by this current lot but seem to blithely tolerate it.

Some perversely seem to enjoy it...
They voted them in! It was obvious before the election what they were like after the lies they made with Brexit.

Sadly, true democracy doesn't exist. It's all just a facade to keep the peace by faking the illusion people are getting a say.
