Hartlepool v Blackpool Official FA Cup Matchday Thread 08.01.22

Agree with most of thr above however, as another poster pointed out this is more than a blip. Our last 10 results in the league have been relegation form, Hartlepool have won one of their last eight in league 2. Worrying to say the least, you can’t blame people for being concerned.
Its the FA Cup. We miss a load of chances, lose a couple of players and lose our way.

The big issue is Keshi's injury, which was avoidable.

Pissed off with that, but it’s only a game of football. Out for a nosh up tonight & a few beers 🍻.

I sincerely hope that Keshi’s injury doesn’t come back to haunt us. He is the difference in attack and if is he missing then we get what we saw in second half. That could be the biggest issue to arise from todays game.

Lavery has scored a few so far this season ,been out injured comes back misses a few chances in a game ,still getting in the right places so put it down to having an off day all strikers even yates go through bad patches and then have a run of scoring ,happens to most strikers the main point i am making is that most of the time our creative play is not the best but we still created at least 4 or 5 decent chances and at least 1 would possibly of hit the back of the net ,if we had got the second then it would of possibly changed the result just needed a bit of luck just like their first goal with a deflection and give the striker a boost of confidence ,anyway thats my opinion just like you have yours ,
Aye, all ifs, buts and maybes.
Keep praying pal🙏

"The first 20 minutes in the second half have cost us the game," Critchley said.

"We knew Hartlepool had nothing to lose and they came out straight away in the first half and put us under pressure with a couple of corners and then we scored. I felt we were in control of the game from there in the first half and had chances to double our lead and maybe even increase it further, but we didn't take them.

"We didn't start the second half. It wasn't recognisable from the team I've seen from my time here. We weren't at it at all. We lost control of the game and our defending for both goals was really poor. We threw everything at them to get back into it, but our lack of quality in front of goal is again another reason why we haven't got anything from the game.

"I'd like to think the players weren't complacent when they came out for the second half, but we just didn't start it like we should have done. Both in possession and out of possession, we were miles off of it. We allowed them to get on top of us, and we needed to defend better in the moments they had.

"Ultimately, we've had a real taste of what the FA Cup is all about today and I hope the players feel as bad as I do after that performance."

I often don't agree with his team selections and substitutions but Critchley is always impressively honest and straightforward in his comments. We are lucky to have this guy in charge.

I see a lot of posters are slagging Hamilton off after this shocker.
Yes he was shite this afternoon but he wasn’t on his own.
Lavery just isn’t the same player he was prior to his injury, I’am not convinced Stirling is any better than what we have got, Dougall looks so so tired these days, Madine throws himself around without any quality, Jerry (yes I know he came on too late) but he just looks so much off the pace these days, Bowler is just huff and puff has the pace but just can’t get round his man, the return of Garbutt offered nothing apart from more shocking crosses into the box.
The whole team played like they just had a late night clubbing it.
Was really looking forward to a decent cup run yet it rolls on for another bloody year.
5 or 6 signings needed for me this window as we still have league one players that haven’t adapted to life in the championship yet and if things don’t improve soon we’ll be looking over our shoulders at other club results over the coming weeks.
Let’s just be thankful we have 3 possibly 4 teams really struggling this season and oh for 2 of them having points deducted could prove our saviour.

Has NC obsession with integrity and playing a full strength side going to hurt us, he seemed hell bent on playing over Xmas. Yes we managed to beat Hull (just) and now puts his first team out on a horrible day away at Hartlepool And now we have 2 influential players out injured for 2 months minimum. ( For the record I’m. a massive NC fan and not in anyway having a go, I would of done things differently )

No kidding Sherlock

they paid us too much respect in the first half and we should have been out of sight, at half time their manager had sussed out how to beat us they upped their pace and were in our faces, we haven't been able cope with the high press all season, and struggled to pass the ball accurately, and although their second was a deflection, it pains me to say that they deserved the win. this game highlighted our deficiencies this season - namely our passing ability when under pressure and our shocking wastefulness in front of goal

We lost an FA Cup tie to a team from a lower league on a cold January day.
Not the first time…….Probably not the last time.

Couple of points out of that game :

1. We picked up two unnecessary injuries…….One to our most creative player this season. This is worrying.
2. Our midfield was outplayed in the second half. It lacked composure and wasn’t picking up the loose balls in the second half. Maybe because :
a We only played two in the middle of midfield
b Maybe we haven’t got the creative ability in midfield
c Maybe the movement and pace is lacking in our forwards
3 The quality of our final ball and our finishing was poor today
4 It is not unusual for us not to be able to dominate against the weaker teams we play
5 Our defending and Grimshaw’s distribution was below par today
6. Hartlepool rolled their sleeves up in the second half, got stuck in and deserved their win

Ask the Hartlepool fans if they would rather be in the Championship with Neil Critchley and Simon Sadler in charge or the 4th round of the FA Cup

A disappointing day but not the end of the world So let’s not throw the baby out with the bath water.
We have made very good progress over the last two seasons but are still a work in progress.
Setbacks are inevitable but we need patience not panic.

We haven't played well since November.
Where are these wins going to come from? Barnsley will be fighting for their lives (as we should be).
Cov/Fulham/Baggies/Blackburn away, perhaps?
Swansea/Derby/Bournemouth/ Sheffield Utd. at home?
Millwall, Bristol City, Cardiff, Luton, Birmingham and Stoke are poor, but we've taken only one point from them
Confidence will be low. For all NC qualifications, can he motivate those still available?

Hamilton was never going to be good enough to make the transition to the Championship, but I'd like him to at least look interested.

Only 2 weeks ago we were great in 1st half against Huddersfield away..a game we would likely have won with 11 players on the pitch..roll forward 2 weeks and, with much the same side, our standards drop dramatically. So what was the difference today?
1. Yates played in that 1st half at Huddersfield and was on his game. Today we had Lavery up top and although I love his work rate..it doesn't seem to work partnering him with Madine from the start. To me he is more of an impact player like when he came on against Middlesborough. He fades out of games when he starts and often gets subbed. Having said that if he had scored one of his chances today the game dynamics change massively in our favour.
2. I think we are more offensive and brighter with Gabriel at right back. I would bring him back for the Barnsley game.
3. Carey played ok 1st half at Huddersfield. He has a shot on him and an eye for goal. Today didn't play due to injury. Connolly not got same qualities. Everyone knows this is an area of the pitch we need to improve, but worryingly Critchley says he has faith in the players he has got and implies its not the end of the world if we don't bring in any more midfielders in this window.
4. Bowler was well up for the Huddersfield game. Was he as effective today? I don't know..I only read reports and kept up with score flashes.
5. Seems like CJ missed a few today. Never thought he'd make it in the Championship..but hoping he would. Thought he might shine today but sadly he is only confirming by every 2nd rate performance what I already knew. He is L1 standard at best.

Thought we'd turned a corner after that 1st half at Huddersfield but now not so sure. Need a big improvement next week at Barnsley..then Millwall at home. Surely should be looking at 4 points from them..then with one or two signings we can be a bit more positive about retaining our Championship status.

The silver lining may just be the impetus needed to make the signings that are required anyway and push on for the seasons remainder.

No coincidence that we have created more chances today against a weaker opposition however the failure to convert them will be apparent whoever you play and will ultimately cost you against any level of opposition.

I'm quite certain the improvements needed are obvious to all who coach and watch.

To that end as long as the goals for column improves I'm sure we will be fine.

As regards Hamilton he is back from a long lay off.It will take time as it did with Anderson not long ago.Keep the faith.

We didn’t deserve to win you lot should of been 4-0 up at half time. We played better second half got lucky deflection for the first and second goal was well taken.

Had pint with some of your fans before game great bunch of lads!

Best luck for the rest of the season.
HOPE everyone go a great draw in the next round - had a chat with a few of you guys after the match - great bunch

Don’t hang around in league 2 for long 😂😄😂😄

We've had a pretty disastrous time since that first half at Huddersfield, aside from the Hull win. Blew that game, blew the Boro game and blew today.

The worst thing is that we had Keshi, Wintle and Carey in that first half at Huddersfield. We look likely to be without all 3 for some time. It gives us major problems. It's a lot of bad fortune.

Who'd own a football club?!

Just like to wish your club the best of luck for the rest of the season, not on here to gloat, thought your fans showed a touch of class at the end of the game.

I wouldn't be too hard on yourselves, we have beaten 6 teams now from a higher league, so it didn't cone as a shock to me that we could beat a championship team if we had a go.

First half I thought we showed way too much respect and made you look a class act, can see why you win games in the championship, second half we went back to playing how we were earlier in the season at home and I thought their was only one team in it for about half an hour. Obviously would of been a different game if you had took the chances in the first half, but I guess that's cup football.

Yes we played poorly but still had a fair few chances which on another day we would of scored, give some credit to hartlepool who battled well and in the end got what they deserved,if we had of played a weakened team critch would of got loads of stick, he played a strong team and has lost the game and got a couple of injurys and still gets a load of stick so cant win either way,,yes it would of been nice to win and get a so called bigger team in next round but it wasn,t meant to be ,hopefully the injuries arn,t to bad ,get a couple more signings and lets get to safety asap ,lets keep on supporting the team as we do,staying in the championship is more important to the club and town,at the end of the day we was never gonna win the cup ,and at least we wont have to play more games.utmp
Good rational post amongst all the knee jerking and hand wringing

Dont need to pray just being real ,all about opinions, you have yours i have mine, and i know which i prefer
I know which you'd prefer otherwise you wouldn't have those options.
If you're being "real" about our current plight, I ask you this question.

Are you happy that we convert so few chances?

No not happy ,but at least we are creating chances ,and i also have faith in the managment team,as long as we improve each season i will be ok with that, after some of the shit we have had over many years supporting this club

After seeing the results from other FA cup matches I’m less disappointed than I was feeling yesterday. Far worse results for some other teams who got knocked out. Yes it was still shite but I’m more pissed off about the injuries to be honest.

Barnsley conceded 4 goals at home to Barrow while Barrow were down to ten men. Imagine that at Bloomfield Rd. If we keep 11 on the pitch next Saturday we must be in with a chance! Or maybe we should just play 10., Barrow were losing 2-0 while they had 11 players.

There were times yesterday when I wished we were playing with 10! 😂

I only watched the first half yesterday but was listening. Feel the turning point was probably Keshi' s injury and replacement by Hamilton. Keshi is the link between midfield and forwards and presses/puts himself about. Hamilton won't be doing that though in truth not many options on bench. A bit worried how we' lol fill the gap
