Hartlepool v Blackpool Official FA Cup Matchday Thread 08.01.22

With the early kick off will be in the spoons near the ground about 10 as at least they will be open.

With a week off before and after the cup game we need to go all out to win this one, bag in early goals and introduce fringe players in last 20/30 mins. We don't want to miss out on Liverpool, City or Man U away in 4th round.

What’s it like as a place to live, in general?

It’s the cup, so, I’m going to go for an extremely unpredictable lineup, a 3-3 full time score line and then penalties.
It's always at the wrong end of the tables around deprivation etc. There are about 5.5 jobs for every ten people of working age and it's not getting better. Primary school performance is ok actually, but by the time the kids get to secondary it drops off a cliff. Pre-Covid, around half the kids didn't get an English and Maths GCSE, so they are always playing catch up. There's been the stripping out of the social fabric (the hospital is in name only, no magistrates courts, no custody suite etc). There's a real issue around those in low pay employment not feeling better off than those on benefits too. For some people there's a genuine balance about working, once free school meals, free prescriptions and so on are taken into consideration. It culminates in life expectancy declining in real terms (18 months from about 2015-2018) and that was before Covid which will have hit us even harder.

Sadly, this also manifests itself into a huge lack of ambition and belief that things can get better by the Civic leadership team. Their ideas are all a bit meh. The marina looks stunning and is, but the restaurants and retail offer simply don't get enough trade to make them viable for any great length of time sadly; and that's not through the lack of effort of the people trying to run them. There just isn't enough disposable income to keep them going, and it isn't a night time destination in the same way some similar towns are.

I'm not sure things are going to improve massively, the power station is slated for decommissioning, with nothing yet to take it's place; this represents 33% of the economic footprint of the town; whether the bits of freeport are enough to replace that lost income is yet to be seen. Personally, I have my doubts.

All sounds pretty negative, BUT, and this is a really big but, as 85% of the population don't move out of the town, there is a real and tangible sense of identity and because of the social economic conditions, people really do look out for one another. I've lived and travelled around a fair bit and they are some of the friendliest people about. It's a bit of a cliché, but they are always ready for a chat and will strike one up whenever really and it's a great place for my children to grow up (notwithstanding we've had a lot of input into their education and have worked so hard to stop them mangling their tenses!)

The rural fringe is beautiful and that's where a lot of the power station and highly educated people live; high quality homes for a lot less than some other semi-rural locations. Sadly, as part of the desire to bring in additional council tax (2nd or 3rd highest in the country) huge swathes of greenbelt are being housed over, without any real indigenous economic growth to support it; we are essentially becoming a commuter belt for Middlesbrough, Durham, Wear and Tyne sides. It'll be interesting to see what happens to the strengths of the place once, the ratio of people with a genuine affinity to the town changes.

Being by the coast is great; my preferred direction is to the Durham heritage section as to be honest it's a bit more rugged and doesn't have the same industrial vista that Seaton Carew has - but the sandy beach section there is as good as anywhere.

So it's a bit of a mixed bag. If you've got a bit about you and are working in a reasonably well paying job life here is brilliant; if you're young and have parents who can make sure you achieve, it's actually OK; if you're poor and/or don't have the skills to move around, it's not so good.

All of this demonstrates why the town by a country mile voted they way they have since 2016; 50 years of Labour locally, 20 years of Labour nationally and still feeling irrelevant, made people get out and vote for change. Whether we see that change around with the levelling up agenda is anybody's guess.

That's the thing with Hartlepool, people drive in and probobly think what a shithole on a winter's day, can't argue it looks bleak when the weather is poor. yet not many people realise wynyard etc is also part of Hartlepool, basically a millionaires village which gets bigger by the week. The marina on a summers day you be hard pushed to have a drink in a nicer place in 90 percent of the country, the fact we have some of the nicest countryside on our doorstep some 20 mins away, people don't go to bishop Cuthbert etc and realise hartlepool has nice parts too. The fact I've travelled and lived all over the world and hartlepool has some of the nicest, friendliest people about, don't get me wrong their are a few scumbags but I've never felt unsafe in hartlepool. As for pools fans, they have a bit of a reputation for being some of the nicest fans around now, I guess if people wanted trouble they can still find it, but you will find most fans have a real respect for other clubs fans, that don't follow the traditional big clubs.

Cheers TSS and monkeyhanger. All very interesting to read. Found myself also looking up the history of the town and the area dating to pre Anglo-Saxon era and I find it fascinating that there is so much history, beneath our feet on such a small island when comparing to where I live (the biggest country in the world).

This website was where I started for anyone interested in a basic introduction:

History of Hartlepool

That’s what I love about football. Away days make me consider towns and areas I’d have never had visited before. You meet people you’d never have met and make good memories.

I have to say, it's been quite funny in a schadenfreude type way, seeing a housing development in Hart village go completely over budget because they've dug up an Anglo-Saxon burial ground.

I shouldn't laugh, but when you have to pay an archaeologist by the day, it's racked up so much it's probably no longer economically viable!

More to the point, if any of the fans are travelling over and fancy a pint in a rural location with a green etc, go to the McOrville in Elwick Village or alternatively the Raby Arms in Hart which isn't quite as picturesque but decent.

I prefer the Mac but there's nothing wrong with any of the others

Depends on what you're looking for really.

We've got a Brewer's Fayre one side of the Marina, The Old West Quay. Absolutely carbon copy of every other Brewers Fayre you'll go into.

In fact we did Breakfast with Santa there on Christmas Eve; when I went v Boro I had déjà vu at The Yeadon Way!

The others which are a bit more refined and expensive

Black Olive
Out Out
Bar 31

Somewhere in between the two styles is Rosie's Bar.

If I was going for decent food, I'd be heading to Portals Place. Fish and Chips by Harbour View.

Pies by Morrell & Sons butcher's but they are more in the town centre 🤣

You also have the worlds best travelling fancy dress army of fans in footballing history !

Haha yes we certainly do. We get crazy away support for the fancy dress games, nearly 600 went to Plymouth for a nothing game. In fact for a small club if we get any hint of success we take large numbers away to games. By success I mean maybe 3 wins in a row lol.

If you want fairly cheap we have about 5 or 6 drinking places within 30 seconds of the ground. The new 1908 bar behind the rink end, the Millhouse far side to where you are, the bowls club also on the far side to away entrance a bar behind the Cyril knowles and one pub just along from there too. If you want to drink in church street near the station I'm sure there will be a few open near there about 5 minutes walk to the ground, there you will find a Wetherspoons etc.

"No team in League Two has picked up more points at home in 2021-22 than the Monkey Hangers, who have lost just three times at Victoria Park this season.

"Neil Critchley's side have lost three successive away games and have only won three matches on the road all season, all by one-goal margins.

⚠️ A road closure remains in place in both directions on the A66 between the A1M at Scotch Corner and A685 at Brough.

This is owing to compacted snow on the road surface.

Snowploughs are on scene attempting to clear the road as quickly as they can.

Thank you for your patience. Posted 1 hour ago

Safe Journey too you all! If your looking for a pre-match pint away fans are always welcome in Raglan its 2min walk from the ground.

I also echo what has been said above 95% of Hartlepool fans are very welcoming and love a chat with away fans before and after the game unfortunately with every club there is a small minority who have a pint of stella and think they can fight the world.

Looks like it will be a good atmosphere and am sure when they away following attendance is announced you will all receive a massive round of applause like we do with all away fans that visit Hartlepool.

Enjoy the game and will hopefully meet some of you before game for a pint!

Callum Connolly comes into the team as Blackpool's only change for this afternoon's Emirates FA Cup, third round tie at Hartlepool United.

The 24-year-old lines up alongside Kenny Dougall in midfield following Ryan Wintle's return to Cardiff City earlier in the week.

Luke Garbutt is back amongst the substitutes.

Team: Grimshaw, Sterling, Ekpiteta, Keogh, Husband, Connolly, Dougall, Bowler, Anderson, Madine, Lavery

Subs: Moore, Monks, Gabriel, Casey, Garbutt, Mitchell, Mariette, Hamilton, Yates

I think he wants to win the game, hope nobody picks a bad one 🙏🏻

I’m glad he’s put a strong team out, it’s round 3 of the FA Cup and it deserves some respect, as do the travelling pool fans and also Hartlepool Utd who will be no pushover.

Fingers crossed for a great performance and an away win taking us to round 4 UTMP

Much like Socrates, all we know is that we know nothing!

General speculation seems to be that we will definitely see CJ play today. I reckon Demi Mitchell and Gabriel will also come into contention. The likes of Garbutt still not fully fit.

Your were right, you know nothing….. 😀
