Do I leave them in garden which they cannot get out.
Do I take them to the rock gardens over the road.
Take them to the front garden and they can do as they please.

They'll get out. They are adept climbers. We have a six foot fence round our garden and they find a way in and out.

According to Google.

I have seen a hedgehog out during the day, what should I do?

Hedgehogs are nocturnal and only come out at night. Generally, any hedgehog out during the day is probably in trouble and will need to be picked up and taken to a wildlife rescue centre. You can pick them up using gardening gloves and put them into a cardboard box, although they are good climbers, so you would need to ensure it cannot escape. If you are local to us, then please bring it along to Tiggywinkles, there is no need to call first as we are open 24 hours a day, 365 days a year. To find your nearest rescue centre, check www.helpwildlife.co.uk.

Whilst the weather is like it is, put out water and perhaps some cat food.

The Leyland Hedgehog Rescue is overflowing with very poorly hogs and their babies that are terribly dehydrated and very ill indeed. Despite their fantastic efforts, many of these hedgehogs can't be saved. A small dish that won't tip over is perfect. If you can also afford to pop out some cat food too, that would be amazing. Never feed hedgehogs bread or milk. Aldi do dried cat food very cheaply

They got in. Don't worry.

We've had them for years now and they are the best slug control there is. Personally I don't feed them because you can't put a 'Reserved for Hedgehogs' sign by the food and you are likely to encourage more unsavoury visitors like Cods or Nobbers. Put water out though.

Not all hedgehogs out in the day are in trouble, it may be you've disturbed them so think twice if you do see them.

As mentioned above don't give them milk
dog food ,minced beef and water is all they need .

And enjoy and realise how lucky you are.

We lived in a council house in Layton and had hedgehogs and loads of different birds. I just got excited as we had a wren in the garden. We live across the way from an old golf course which is being developed for houses. Doing my best to attract the birds over here. The number of trees cut down is criminal

Yes. Seen them do it.
😂 But it’d probably be easier if you provided a means of access and exit from your garden at ground level. Then they could avoid the “Where Eagles Dare/Colditz” type scenario.

Apparently they do roam a lot so we’re all encouraged to ensure there’s a way in and out of your garden.

I suspect many Welsh Nationalists would like to adopt much the same approach to English exiles invading their land….😉🤣

Seeing a hedgehog abseiling is a great sight though. Especially if you're lucky enough to see them jump from one cable car roof to another.

Carrying an ice axe!!!

I don’t wish to hijack the thread but…..

I doubt hedgehogs could actually do that.

But I have no doubt at all that squirrels could!! Seen them do it. Many times.

Back on thread
Young hedgehogs born now should be OK. They often have a second litter in late summer and they are at risk as they do not put enough weight on to hibernate.
For food they recommend sensitive cat food.
Looked after 3 a couple of winters ago, but not seen any since in the garden.

How do I tell the difference of a garden visitor between a hedgehog and a rat that’s spiked his hair up? Asking for a friend ( and should I leave a bowl of water out anyway?)

Leave them alone.

They will get out once they're ready.
If the hogs or hoglets get into any difficulties then get in touch with hedgehog rescue Blackpool 07577010011

As said before leave water out for them in this weather

Tend to be seen more in daylight at this time of year cos there is so little dark. Was out wandering our somewhat confused dog at 3.00 this morning and came across one, it was full light up here by then.

We had one die a pretty horrific death in our garden a few years ago after it got its leg trapped in between wooden border edging. It had already died by the time I tried to rescue it, the poor soul.

Try to make a small way in & out for them. They will generally find it. They like cat biscuits. Leave water out on a shallow bowl. When it’s hot like this, many suffer from dehydration. If you do find a poorly / underweight one out in the daytime, take to one of the proper hedgehog rescue centres - not the vets - they will just put them down.

Will leave them alone then, throw out the odd goodie and regular water.
If you are feeding the Hog and Hoglets use cat food but NOT IN JELLY . Only use cat food in gravy .NEVER GIVE MILK only water . Fences are generally not a problem especially if you have plants growing up them . It’s always good to make an easy entrance/ exit at some point at the bottom of fence . And lastly enjoy without disturbing, you are very lucky !
