Holloway as England manager

Since winning the world cup England has gone for the safe option, managers that have tried to win by trying not to lose.
They avoided the Brian Clough style manager who would upset the FA, and gone for the Bobby Robson, Ron Greenwood type. Whenever they
have taken a more risky approach such as Venables, Hoddle they have been despatched at the first sign of any off-field controversy.
Until finally they have appointed Southgate a manager that has the charisma of John Major, and as risky as Trevor Brooking.
A manager that was probably chosen so he wouldn't offend the woke players that represent the country.

Maybe the time is right to appoint someone that has won the biggest prize in football twice, a person that will not speak out against their employer
no matter how they behave which will suit the FA. Someone that will play attacking football, and will be a media favorite. But above all someone that has the motivation and oratory skills to inspire the overpaid,mega-rich, lazy, woke players that would rather be on holiday than playing in a World/Euro cup final.

That man is Ian Holloway and combined with two or three coaches to do the routine training work could be the ideal person to do the job.

We have some half decent players but if they were allowed to play as a team it would help. I could just see Holloway with 3 subs ready to come on last night on at about 80 minutes (plan B)

Not so sure about the lazy Woke bit, surely if they were lazy they'd be less awake than average ? I know I am.

"Woke players that represent the country."
Please can you explain that to me? I honestly don't understand what you mean.

Lazy in that we were outworked by a motivated hard working Scottish team, that created a lot more chances than England.

Woke they're not racist, so a football manager would have to be very careful with his language and how he treated them not to be considered racist or offend them. Most successful English football managers are white over the age of 45 and will have grown up, played and learnt management skills in a very different environment than today. There has been a big power shift from players needing an international career
to maximize their earning potential and career prospects, which is why so many players are retiring themselves from playing rather than being retired by the manager. The old-fashioned bollocking at halftime given by Fergie, Clough, Jack Charlton etc will have to make way for a lot more measured words and actions. Maybe a more off-the-wall Holloway speech and approach would be a way to motivate the players.

Well they could have appointed the last English manager to win the top division title but hey ho.

Sean Dyche would be a great choice but interestingly the Germans have had their guy in place for 15 years, so maybe that would be the way to go too?

Get in the bin with this shite

2010-12 Ollie as England manager. Yes please.

Of course the FA would probably make a bolok of it and appoint the 2013-19 version. I know we're all dreaming, but someone of that nature is what is needed to reignite the country's passion for the national team.

Please forgive me here 20s, but I think you'll understand what I mean. You provide a good example of someone who keeps following the team unequivocally. You call them out when they deserve it, as you did yesterday, but you'll be there regardless for the next one. England has to win over the (possibly) millions of people who aren't interested enough, or in some cases at all. And the only long term way to do that is to play attacking, attractive football that gets everyone talking about what we did do rather than what we didn't. Whether we actually win anything or not.

So although Ollie sadly isn't the man, that's the philosophy I'd like the England manager to have. I remember a quote from the brilliant Barry Davies, covering Venables' first game , how good it is to see England players being allowed to express themselves. We have the players to do that now, just let them off the leash.

Of course, being English, we'll probably get turned over 9-7 and everyone will whinge that we can't defend.

Maybe you are saying that there but El Tel over Ollie every time.

Ollie has never been near El Tel even in 2010/12.

No of course not mate. Just that the thread was about Ollie, and although it would never happen it's how I wish England would approach games.

Venables wasn't gung ho, far too tactically astute for that but he still encouraged flair players to show their skills. Wish he still had the job now tbh.

There’s only one man for the the job and it’s “ four, four f*&$#@g two“ the legend Mike Basset.
I've just skimmed through this thread and for allhis faults and frailties, I would rather have Ollie coaching our squad at this very moment than Southgate...

At least he would select attack minded individuals (in form) and give it a right go.

Even an Ollie without his mojo would do better than Gareth bleedin Southgate.
I fear we are stuck with him for some time yet.

Doesn't matter who we have as Manager, we are not going to win anything unless we come up with a better song than GSTQ. The Scotts have their own song so do the Welsh both are inspiring, we have a dirge that inspires no one. "Land of Hope and Glory" anyone?

Tango 1953, so why do you think Gareth Southgate got the top job in football? With three years of football league experience that ended in
relegation.

For me the Olly, or previously the Kevin Keegan approach at Newcastle (if they score 3 we’ll score 4) is what we need to aspire to. Southgate will hold the ball in our half and ensure we have zero goals against, as long as we pinch just one goal to win a match. You then end up with the borefest like we witnessed against Scotland.
The Germans proved last night against Portugal that all out attack wins games, you have to accept though that you may concede one or two on the break.
So what do we want, 0-0’s / 1-0’s which means minimal defeats, or higher scoring games that may sometimes catch you out. For me, I’d rather see the Olly type of excitement and feel like we gave it our best shot,
The players are capable, I’m sure it’s all about the managers match instructions that’s holding the lion (or three lions) back

Because we all of a sudden found ourselves without a manager with a massively aging and Soutgate was available and had success with the u-21s.

Absolutely nothing to do sith being woke, you utter sap.

But he didn't have success with England U21's they were favorites for the Euros U21's and finished bottom of their group.

Your view is not without merit.
Bobby Robson was a ‘down to earth’ man who always tried.
Venables was a character who was ‘smarter than the average.......’
But, yes, if you’re alluding that the other England managers of your lifetime (?) have been boring underachievers, then you’re probably right.
I met Southgate in Villamora, 2010. He’s pleasant. Not much more to add.
So, which manager do we know who is charismatic - Ollie, yes. Lucky, yes. Clever, I’d follow him out of the trench, diplomatic, all things to all men? No.
Post when you’ve got some candidates for vetting pls.
