How can we ever hope to score....

.....when we don’t create any chances ? Gary Madine back-heeled a ball unexpectedly to create a little chaos, from which we scored. In the entire game, not a single chance was fashioned. Not one ! Still no one runs beyond our front three , and still we concede down our right flank. Stupidity is doing the same thing over and over again, but expecting a different result. Nothing has changed since Plymouth. Lots of meaningless possession on the halfway line, with absolutely no creativity.

We need to shoot more and vary our play a little. We have been too predictable and teams will sit back, watch us play and wait for the inevitable mistake. This is always going to happen every now and again, the fact it is most weeks is quite worrying. The other worry is our consistency, first half was excellent and just lacked a cutting edge. The 2nd half was poor in comparison. We clearly have a strong squad, hopefully once everyone is match fit and bedded in we'll see more wins. I still have concerns and it is vital we pick up a win soon!

I think Virtue would have been your man to run ahead of the front three if he was fit.
Gets a slating on here, but he arrives in the box consistantly and scores vital goals. Any break away we had last season where he played (for examples on defending corners) he was always one of the 2 or 3 leading the charge.
I think if fit, he could be the surprise player that breaks into the team and keeps his shirt.

“Handful of chances”. I didn’t see them. I didn’t see any ! Yates was sharp when a loose ball came his way, but it was hardly the end product of a clinical move.

Most of Pool's possession is in areas where the opposition are more than happy to let us pass it about. Teams wait for a bad ball and then move it wide and attack our full backs...Turton is experienced but slow, whereas Mitchell is quick but positionally poor. A total lack of creativity in midfield doesn't help our forwards but...Hamilton has pace but is closely marked and given no space, Madine has presence and touch but is immobile, and Yates has very little to commend him other than he runs around to little effect. None of the front 3 have a good career goalscoring record so are not likely to be prolific.

Interestingly I watched the goals from L1 today, what stood out to me was most of the goals scored were what appeared to be against missing defences, ie not many defenders in and around the box. It could be just me but we seem to trying to score agains 10 defenders when ever we get near the opposition box. Are teams trying much harder to beat us due to the hype ? I agree that we don’t seem to be able to get in behind defences. Is this because we don’t have the guile or are defences putting a shift in against us more than other teams. I’m a fan of the patient build up play, lots of passing and possession based football but I do agree with some that NC needs to be working on that final third with the front three and the midfield.

The last third is where it counts and you need players willing to be creative and take a chance and at the moment we only seem to have Hamilton able to do that.
GTF is a good example from the past and why he was so revered. I'm not expecting that kind of quality obviously but we seem to be distinctly lacking anything like that where it matters. Moribund in the last third in Alan Partridge terms.

There’s 10 in defence by the time we have passed it nicely along the halfway line. The build-up is far too slow. We need to get to the by-line and cross from there, not from deep. It’s just too easy to defend against.

The way we’re set up is perfect for taking the lead. Score first and completely control the game, suck them out and hit them again. Game over. At the moment we don’t seem to be able get that first goal and set the tempo. But it’s coming.

Set pieces let’s us down. Lacking height and poor free kicks.
The teams we have played have had very few chances.
Ipswich had 4 shots on target and Crewe just 1.
Plymouth and Gillingham only had 3 on target too.
We have had double that amount!

spot on. Hopefully Woodburn can be that creative spark this team is desperately missing.
