How I see things panning out

Most will agree that the current approach of investing in youth is something that we’re not really used to. We’re not really used to any investment to be honest!
However I like most feel that with time it will pay off. Young players buzz off confidence but are susceptible to lapses of concentration.

I really do feel Oxford will be the template from which we should be basing our thinking on. They came last year and played us off the park for us to only scrap a win. Akin to the game on Saturday. They did get a head of steam (Eventually) and went on a long run.

This is going to take time, personally I would write off the first 10 games and as long as we have amassed an acceptable level of points we can then look to press on. We’ve got the next transfer window to tweak things too.

Some posters need to move away from this short term-ism thinking, we won’t sign Charlie, or KDH, or a 20 goal a year established league 1 striker. They are not available, do not fit our profile and could upset the balance of the team. We’ll bring in a central defender and more fire power but they will have to be right for the team and critch.
Stay positive people, we’re only just beginning 👍

Bang on.

yes great post and analogy with Oxford.

That said, it's a message board and fans should be able to air their feelings and viewpoints. Constructive criticism should always be welcomed.

How do you amass an acceptable number of points from the first ten games if you write them off?

To be fair Oxford dominated us a lot more convincingly than we dominated Plymouth but still some good points...we are a work in progress and clearly some of our fans thought we only had to turn up to win every game...that was never going to be the case and I will be astounded if we dont lose at least one or two more in the first 10 games...I am more concerned at not scoring than not winning...my ethos would be that were aiming to score more than you and Blackpool nil is something I dont want to hear very often.

Stating the obvious, but we are not an academy side. The aim of our club is to progress upwardly through the leagues and that means a correct balance being met between short-term results and longer-term player investment/development. 45 games to go though and I can't honestly say I come into this season feeling like we should be challenging for a top 6 spot. If we do then great, but to my mind last season was a wasted opportunity and we're effectively starting again with NC from square one.

Impossible to read anything into a result from one game, but obviously we don't want to develop the 'habit' of playing well and losing. There's only so long that can be considered unlucky...Important to get something on Saturday and to hit the back of the net too. It will build confidence.

I agree. I think next season will be the tilt at promotion. Anything from this season will be a bonus.

Steve McMahon used to say there is a correct way of losing, and I think Saturday was it.

He also used to say his son was better than Keith Southern... 😉

Agree though. There looked like plenty of positives to take from the performance.

I agree to a degree, the one problem with the Oxford model is that so far it hasn’t worked. I would argue that if they sorted their defence out they would of walked out of L1 last season. I hope NC can sort ours out because if he can I think we could walk out if this league but if we keep making sloppy mistakes at the back we may just miss out just like Oxford did.

Maybe our defence just works differently to the standard thing we have been used to over the years. Plymouth barely got a look at our goal on Saturday, our problems were chiefly at the other end. We keep possession and play high up the pitch. We have speed at the back to cope with teams exploiting the space behind us. We have tall central defenders to cope with set piece balls into the box. In theory at least.

Chatting to a Barca fan (I know it's a world away from us...) and when Pep took over he cleared out Deco, Eto, Ronaldinho etc etc and brought in all the youngsters. They lost their first few games and the fans were on his back.
They didn't think players like Xavi, Messi, Iniesta, Pique could cut it and were demanding proven players at that level.
Also they didn't like his new formation and style of play, very susceptable to corners and set pieces. Pep's view was that they would retain the ball and not give many corners away once the team gelled together properly.

People need to remember it's not just the players that are largely inexperienced at this level, it's the manager too. There will be times when that inexperience will show and cost points.

So don't expect too much too soon.

I agree with the Oxford analogy. I remember coming away from the win against Oxford thinking it had been a horrible game to watch. Disappointed with the Plymouth result but enjoyed the game and parts of the replay I’ve watched. Plenty of promise. I don’t think Critch will be writing any games off. Any analogy with Barca does seem like getting carried away but I understand the points being made.

Good o/p - think a few were getting too giddy. Build the foundations first, which Larry should have done last year, before you can build for promotion.

I don't want to sound too negative but our defence is definitely a work in progress. Of the four who played against Plymouth Mitchell was the only one to come out of it with anything to show. Turton and Nottingham showed that they are average at best and Ekpiteka looks raw and prone to an unforced error or two. I am sure Critch is aware of this and hopefully looking to bring in some quality particularly at centre half. A shame we missed out on the Forest lad Gabriel as he could have covered both right back and centre half. Did we actually sign Ballard on loan from Arsenal? I am hoping for a Michael Jackson/Ian Evatt type signing but I think this is dependant on offloading a couple of players like Feeney and possibly Madine.

The signs are encouraging so far from what I've seen & I remain optimistic, but promotion with almost a complete new team may prove a bridge too far, but you can hope though.

If we end up losing every week, just watch the experience flood into the team again. And everyone who said we need to move away from that will be telling us what a good thing it is!!
