How many strikers does one team need?

Depends what you call strikers, are they out and out, fox in the box, or wingers who score, or 8/10.

We definitely need a fox, and imo need a target man.

minimum of four required so fir me at this point i disagree with Critch stating we don't need strengthening that much up front. To some extent even Lavery is new to the English league, Joseph we hope will be good enough but there still are doubts and Beesley and Holmes still have a lot to do to prove that they can be regular goalscorers at this level.

Five is about right and all need to provide something different. It’s no use having five all built the same making the same runs.

You need height from at least 1. Pace from another and at least 1 has to have the ability to hold up play. Personally I would have one at least who was essentially a goal hanger and always got in the right places even if his contribution to the team was negligible.

agree. Would anyone say any of our strikers are proven goalscorers? Bishop at Pompey and Charles at Bolton are just two who we know will score a good number of goals for their respective teams and will likely outscore any of our players. I daresay theres others too like Collins at Bristol Rovers, May at Charlton and McGoldrick at Derby.

McGoldrick signed for Notts County

I would think Martin would fit in if we can get him on a respectable wage ! The lad from Liverpool 'Leighton' would
add another dimemsion to our attack.

Yes you’re not far wrong there, the next striker in needs to be of good quality. Lucas Joao would cost but this is the type of presence we need if we’re to have a serious threat up front. You can’t take out what you don’t put in ! If not him than an equivalent. Not many of these types available, I get the impression we are very selective, which is good but we must aim as high as we can.

Mcgoldrick now at Notts County...back where he started off. Impressive signing that one

Lots of ,'strikers' being signed. Many of whom only seem to have 2 or 3 goals in their last couple off seasons .
To get a goalscoring striker is in the lap of the Gods . Someone who's not been prolific can come into a team , all the planets are in alignment and he bags you 15-20 goals that season. Then he gets sold and ...never does anything ever again .
That's why decent goalkeepers are so easy to sign. Only 1place for them to compete for and loads of em about

I still think we need at least 1 more striker. I still really like the look of Nombe or Smith. If we could get one of thoes then I think that would be a real statement of intent this season.

Sam Smith has signed for Reading.

Partly luck but a lot of it is down to factors like chance creation and confidence which can be managed. Our classic example was Scott Taylor. We found a way to play him and the players to support him that enabled him to thrive and his confidence grew. Critch in his Cork interview talked about finding a position and a system to get the best out of Lavery. We judge individuals far too much really, I think. Individual performances are heavily dependent on how a team is set up and the collective skill set and confidence of the group.

Hence why i wouldnt be writing off players who struggled last season.

Some random new poster said we are in talks with Britt Assombalonga and thats not the sort of thing anyone could make up. Must be true! He probably wants too much money though.

Very much with you in that . Give every player at least 2 chances I'd say. Last season was a write off mainly due to ineffective ?? Use of players . Players who showed little or appeared to struggle last season could well rip it up this season . Poor one season doesn't necessarily mean a crap player . Also players mature and come good at different rates .
Would love it to be Lavery , Carey, Apter and Holmes for this season.
A surprise or two from the development squad would be a nice bonus too

Alex Lankshear looks not too far off to me based off first impressions. And Apter of course. I think both will get some time off the bench at least. I hope so.

Well if Joseph is injured and probably out at the start of the season, I don't want to be kicking off a campaign with two strikers - one (Beesley) who am not sure is ready for it.

I have no doubt that had we have had another striker last season (especially when McCarthy arrived and I can’t believe he didn’t bring one in) that we’d have survived!
