How Not to Run a Football Club - Official Discussion Thread

My Dad got this as a "Christmas Present" from me today and is raving about it. I think the last book he read was Jeff Winter's autobiography, so well done Foggy.
Sadler years for the sequel surely?

If it were made into a film I'd love it to be done as a farce. None of this gritty realism.
A screenplay would be the perfect opportunity to build bridges and rectify your glaring errors/omissions? Maybe at the Huddersfield game Jason Statham could race from his seat, dodging a hail of gunfire from Karl, Sam & George, shoulder charging stewards, police and anyone else who stands in his way, before knee sliding the full length of the south stand concourse and smashing the fire alarm just as the clock changes from 45:59 to 46:00!

Just finished reading the book now. Great read and I accept you cant cover everything and Foggy has done an admirable job but Im of a certain age that remembers the first wave of Oyston discontent which resulted in the walk to Claughton and the car outside the ground in the late 90s which wasnt pictured or mentioned albeit briefly.

This is a time to draw a line under the past and look to the future, thank EVERYBODY AND I MEAN EVERYBODY however or whatever they did to help, oust those sheisters. Its a fantastic time to be a Seasider and negativity, hatred and all else will only drag us backwards and downwards if we hark back to the past.

BRETT is my modern day Stanley Mathews, DJ perhaps a Dave Bamber and now Bowler a modern day Tony Green, Ekipetata perhaps Evatt or Barker. My point is, we have and must move on if we are going to improve our football club and town. Lets not live in the past but look forward to the future. UTMP!!! Over and out!

Finally (finally finally) it seems like some people are getting their copies, so I thought I'd make a thread here for your comments, questions etc, general chat. Looks like WH Smith had their copies ready to pick up yesterday and Blackpool Waterstones have most of the orders placed with them ready to pick up today (general stock for sale in shop not quite ready yet though) and have deliveries out in the post. Amazon has told people April which was in error and are now updating estimated delivery to next week.

Looking forward to all your thoughts. If you spot a typo, don't tell me for a few weeks, the amount of times I proofread it I don't think I could take it just yet!

Book signing/q+a has been postponed from this week as stock hasn't arrived at the Armfield Club and many won't have gotten their orders yet, but will sort out a new date soon.

Happy reading all. Thank you so much for buying, I hope it lives up to expectations. My twitter is @nathanjfogg, send me all your photos please!
Foggy, I meant to ask...did you speak with David Conn of the Guardian whilst doing your research? He gave us loads of references during the bad times. Either way, a copy of your book to him might get it some good publicity.

And a copy to Colin Murray wouldn’t go amiss given his support during that period of time. Oh and Rachel Riley which l offer to personally deliver 😛😛

....filmed in slow motion, to the soundtrack of a 120 piece orchestra playing Ride of the Valkyries.

Seriously good read foggy thoroughly enjoyed it, during the years of picketing outside the west stand we often mentioned somebody should write a book about our ‘struggle’ and you’ve gone and done it. Obviously it was impossible to include every single incident involved during the boycott, such as the evening in the Town Hall public gallery where we were told off for airing our thoughts towards the unscrupulous brother Blackburn after he tried to laugh off our attempt to highlight the problems in our club’s ownership. Earlier on this thread a poster remonstrated that this is not a ‘foggy appreciation thread’ well I tend to disagree, i see it as an appreciation of someone who has dedicated time and effort to write this book, and i hope it sells copies by the thousands. Good luck.

Yep 2nd all that Al👍👍

As said in a other thread - got home to Singapore yesterday to find the hard back in the letter box!!!

Kindle read was amazing though 👍👍

First chapter done. Didn't realise Karl was the first chairman to introduce the +1 contracts into players contracts in the clubs favour. Now a regular occurrence in football.

There will be a lot in there you wont realise 20's.

Fascinating.

What a fantastic read, brought many memories back, told me things I didn't know about, made me angry in parts and laugh in other parts. An excellent record of what no doubt went on behind closed doors as well as the well publicised areas that were public knowledge.

Once I started it, I couldn't put it down, and will now read it again.

i got mine yesterday and got stuck into it. Great insight to things i didn’t know and brilliantly written so far anyways. I keep putting it down as i don’t want it to end!
The Parky bit had me fuming at KO and also sad at the same time.

I'm sure that Patrick Collins (now retired) from the Mail would enjoy it.
He was supportive at the time and had a few snipes at the O's.
I did share a couple of email communications with him, during those dark days.😉

Re the earlier discussions with Phil BFC I think it should be obvious that different groups/individuals took action that coincided. I think this is the reason for different recollections of the same event. Don't think Phil should be derided, at the same time the author should not be criticised. I will be ordering a cop

Not sure that this warrants the police getting involved. Phil would hardly stand a chance.

No offence, but I got to around page 10 and it's so hard going that I couldn't be arsed with the rest. It's full of egotistical shite that could easily have been made up, including numerous events that can't possibly be corroborated and sound like pure fantasy in order to apportion greater importance and/or relevance to certain people or groups.

This thread I mean, I haven't read the book yet.

hahahaha class

i wonder if the ones that didn’t boycott and kept on giving the ‘stains money have a tinge of guilt or wish they could turn back the clock on reading the book?

A la The Death of Stalin. Joe Exotic as OO for starters 🤣

Finished the book today and the epilogue had me a bit emotional. Well done enjoyed it thoroughly and will be recommending to all.

Just finished it, and I want to add my appreciation. A fine achievement, Foggy.

There were so many bits where you thought ‘Shit, I’d forgotten that even happened’. What a ride.

From approx the McMahon period onwards - in so many different ways - it’s been an amazing time to be a Blackpool fan. Very rarely a dull moment, with twists and turns, troughs and peaks, that almost defy belief.

I was lucky enough to be in court on the day the Oystons were ordered out and re-reading that section brought back the emotion of the day and the difficulty in comprehending that what we’d just witnessed was actually real. The feeling was directly comparable to the moment the final whistle blew at Wembley in 2010.

I was hoping to read a bit about the Chopra saga. Like what was the motivation for Oyston sanctioning his wages at a time when he needed to clear his debts with the unsavoury characters in Newcastle. Many were openly discussing what was being supplied in return.

Haven't read any of the thread but have finished the book. If anyone isn't in a position to buy a copy, I'd be happy to drop mine off for them to keep/pass on. Just PM me - first come first served and I can drop off anywhere between Cleveleys and Marton tomorrow lunchtime.

Good read - Nice to have it all down in chronological order as my memory of certain events was a bit blurry. Well done Foggy on your first published book.
