Husband- “The talent is probably better than the year we went up”

Interesting comment in his post match interview which shows the confidence that’s been built amongst the group.

Whatever you think of Critchley he should be commended for building that sort of atmosphere in the dressing room considering the nightmare of last season.

Not sure I actually agree with the statement itself though.

Promotion season we had Yates, Anderson, Ballard, a fit Kev Stewart to name a few.

Its a good interview and i like the positivity too. And he may prove to be right as the season unfolds. We are doing better at this stage of the season than we were in 20/21. Players are still settling in and there's more to come. Casey and Pennington are doing well. Rhodes is more prolific than Jerry was and Norburn is a decent replacement for Stewart, who only made 16 appearances that season. Hubby has played and trained with both groups and no doubt sees potential that he believes will develop this season. We should see more from the likes of Dembele, Weir, Kouassi, Lyons, Joseph. Its a slow cautious process with Critch but there's clearly more to come.

Don't agree with him but fair play to him for believing that.
Husband doesn't agree with you. And his opinion is worth many times yours given his daily involvement.

Match squad on Oct 20th 2020...

C Maxwell, D Mitchell, O Turton, Marvin Ekpiteta, J Husband, E Robson, MJ Williams, G Ward (D Ballard, 4), G Madine (J Yates, 61), C Hamilton, B Woodburn (B Lubala, 68)
Unused Subs: J Gabriel, O Sarkic, D Kemp, J Sims

I was comparing it with the team with Yates, Ballard, Keshi and Embleton. That team is miles better. The one in your post is missing three of those.

I think you are being a bit unfair here although not intentionally. Husbands words were "the year we went up" So that isn't the 2020 team on October 20th 2020. It's the team/squad that finished and played in 2021 which of course then included the Janury 2021 transfer window and included the likes of Simms.

never understood the hype around stewart, firstly almost always injured, and when he did play he wasn't exactly worlds apart from anyone else on the pitch.

yates - as much as it hurt to see him go - weve probably found a more prolific scorer in rhodes.
keshi - fantastic player who we havent quite replaced but have a few that might do his role, dembele but hes a bit different, morgan, weir maybe and we have carey who could be an exceptionally good player given the right circumstances.
ballard did well for us, but hasnt really set the world on fire since, and casey, pennington and husband are a very good combination and there is still Marv on the sidelines, connolly who can do a job there

Yes, but you can see things from the end of that season. Husband is comparing time for time.

I know but it's a false comparison. We havent had a January window yet, and some players have not had much match time like Dembele. Yates didn't score at the rate Rhodes is doing. Marv can't get in the team this seasoin. Casey is probably peforming as well as Ballard was at th same stage.

Always found the idea that Stewart was "the best player at the club" a bit bizarre to be honest. Always used to see people say that.. "best player at the club when fit". I never saw what he provided, as you say, that elevated him beyond everyone else at the club - he was just a decent defensive midfielder.

He was also never fit so didn't matter how good he was, it was always a hypothetical anyway!

I’d forgotten/erased MJ Williams from my memory! He was terrible!

Think he was talking about the squad as, a whole. We had some excellent individuals but the backups were not anywhere near same calibre

Don’t think anyone would deny that Husband’s opinion means more than ours but still doesn’t mean people can’t put across their views?

I’d say that on the rare occasion he was fit and getting a run of games he actually was worlds apart from other midfielders in the division.

Oozed class and composure even in the championship.

I’ll be honest, I’ll take what JH says above anyone on here, any day of the week .
Again, this is blatantly obvious? I don’t think anyone is saying their opinion is more valuable or accurate than Husbands, just different. Which is allowed.

It’s a football forum where football fans give their opinions on football.

Are you saying no one should ever put their opinion across on signings, team selection, individual players, tactics unless they’ve actually played at the elite level?

If so we might as well close the site.

i‘m just stating my opinion , is that so hard for you to grasp ?

It'll be interesting to see how the likes of Oxford and Portsmouth fare if they lose a few of their first XI.
Our 3 injured players plus Lyons who obviously needed timeout would almost certainly be regular starters in L1 for most teams. But they are probably not even guaranteed a squad place here.
That strength in depth and completion for places is why I am certain promotion is a probability

Gabriel, Joseph, and don't tell me that Virtue is injured again, please? I think the first two would be regulars in the Championship to be honest, and Virtue is certainly good enough for L1.

Does anyone know how far they are from playing BTW?

Joseph and Gabriel are starting to be involved in first team training so probably mid Nov allowing for match fitness
Virtue 2 weeks or so behind them

Simms missed the Play Off final so the team that finished that season got promoted without him.

Demi Mitchell would be class as an attacking wing back with Turton more defensive on the other side. How that’d work inverted I don’t know.

Better squad depth than we had most of that season, although we had some big players who were on top form at that time who are very handy.

We had a lot of injuries as well.

Get the injured lads back soon and avoid any major or too many injuries and let's see how we do.

We'll have to wait to fully judge if NC gets this squad firing like the last one.

Hard to say if league 1 stronger than last time, but the football is different. Teams are getting technically better over time and managers playing certain ways. But thrn so are we.

don't be an arse. I made it pretty clear. Simple question. Was Simms part of the squad that finished the season? Answer is yes he was.
Course he was. It was a shock when I got into Wembley after the traffic chaos and learned he wasn't playing ergo, up till an hour before kick off he was very much involved in everyone's mind ..

"Reflecting on the season to date, Husband admitted Pool’s confidence struggled during periods of the campaign.

He said: “If you look at our performances against the top six, our record is pretty good, none of them want to play us.

“We just dropped points where we shouldn’t of dropped points and that has probably been our downfall this year.

“We struggled a little bit away from home.

“The Christmas period where we got beat by Port Vale and Burton Albion was very poor.

“It dented our confidence a little bit away from home and we struggled to pick it up from there.”

No mention in any of the above comments, of our double goal scorer on that day, back at Wembley in 2021. A case of ‘out of sight, out of mind’ - possibly?
