I think the Appleton football

Will be more exciting than the boring dross Critchley served up

I know its early days but playing 2 ball players in central midfield certainly made a nice change, we looked more likely to create chances

I also thought the passing was more forward thinking instead of the side ways, backwards ziggy zaggy shite that we played last season

433 looks like the preferred system with a high front 3 and only one holding midfield player

Still think we are short at fullback, central midfield and wide forwards so a lot to do on that front but a pleasing start all the same

Right back is the biggest worry Gabriel does seem to get a lot of knocks no way Apter or Tharme can play there so hopefully we'll get a decent loan in that position as we don't want Connolly he was very decent in the middle of the park yesterday.

I liked watching Apter get the ball and push forward quickly, not just running up the wing but often going through the centre. I hope he gets a really good chance this season.
He's all left foot and was playing on the right hence why i think he was coming inside all the time

Would love Dujon Sterling to come back on loan if at all possible?
Jordan Gabriel is a very good right wing back, but I agree we need quality cover at RB, and DS can play in other positions as we saw last season. Connolly took his chance in the first team very well last season with some great performances , but he's no right back, much better in DM.

Apter had a very good 45 minutes yesterday, but no way would he be given that much time and space in the Championship. Hope he and the other youngsters get a chance (on merit) this season.

I didn't see the second half yesterday, but I was impressed with the first half formation and performance, especially Carey, who I think we missed massively last season.

I watched the game on Youtube last night and I thought, considering he was completely out of position and had a really good game, although against weak opposition, but he is progressing and it would be good to see him on the bench this season and see how he goes on. He looks an exciting prospect. Carey was excellent too and it was so much better having 2 creative midfielders, although I think a quality replacement for Anderson would be best. I would cash in on him if we get the chance.

Agreed, I thought Dale did well too.

Appleton is more forward thinking than someone who wants to be a No 2 in more ways than one.
sorry about that dig about the former manager avftt forum members. But I had locked myself out of the forum for ages. So did not get chance to say at the time. Might as well say in full, I would rather have Appleton in charge by a mile now, That guy does not even back himself to make decisions, Would rather have it easier, With his mate. Being No 2. Assistant at City or Liverpool maybe.
Anyway. The style will be more entertaining.

Whilst I understand the Vile directed at Critch, it is worth remembering he did get us promoted playing pretty attractive football, and kept is comfortably in the Championship with the means at his disposal,. I thought the hammering of Birmingham was pretty entertaining.

Appleton's first brief term wasn't exactly inspiring, I seem to recall most of the games ended in draws, but then he had to play the hand dealt.

And on the God awful Cow pat of a pitch too.

If we’re going with 433, the right of a midfield three is probably the only position he could considered for , so I would like to have a look at him , if that’s ok with you!
Not really, no its not ok at all

He's all left foot and plays as a winger so i have no idea why you want to play him in a midfield 3

Largely agree with this,

remember back at the start of the Lg 1 season with Critchley he tried the 4-3-3 formation, but what is a forward thinking formation combined with a conservative style of play nearly ended in disaster. The more you look back on that time period I think I start to question his general ideas as a manager.

Agree fullback looks weaker than central defence, but I reckon Gabriel is a good Right Back if he can stay fit and Husband and Garbutt should do enough to help us stay in the division this year.

After seeing Raptor run at people out wide yesterday, and seeing how he's physically developed he needs to be tried in that central attacking midfielder role, we need some with a low centre of gravity who can run at people and commit defenders to open lanes for Jerry and Lavery, there was literally no chance of that happening with Quitch as as soon as the defensive midfielders got hold of it the ball went backwards.

Inclined to agree about the strike options we need to source better.

The head coach seems to think he is comfortable with both feet but don’t let facts get in the way of your agenda !

What agenda?

I'm just saying why on earth would you want to play a young up and coming player out of position

It makes absolutely no sense what so ever
Think about it Phil, if we’re not playing with traditional wingers then midfield is the only place for him unless you want him to play as part of the front 3 . Besides that , I said I would like to have a look at him in that position not necessarily give him that spot , and if it works , who knows , we could un earth a gem.

Yeah part of the front 3 would be the way in this shape

He's not a Championship central midfield player not in a million years

I could see Apter in the number 10 position myself. Playing inbetween the lines. He has a nice low centre of gravity and I think he will be effective in those areas between midfield and the forwards. He might originally be a winger but that doesn't mean that's his best position going forward. He seems to have a bit of 'David Silva' about him. Just a tenth of the player will do for me 👍🏻

Yes I agree and said the same yesterday about where we need to strengthen.

Apter played at right back yesterday I'd say that was slightly more out of position than right mid wasn't Ward a winger before looking more comfortable in midfield.

You may well be right !

Agree with the o/p.
Even my mum who knows fcuk all about football questioned why Pool were passing it sideways and to quote: “going the wrong way.” 😂

OPer in stating the bleedin' obvious....again 😉

The worry is of course we don't get the players in to do it correctly. I have a fear that if we play 433 and go more attacking we'll get picked off defensively. Maybe that's why Critchley bored the fuck out of everyone.

Bottom line is simple. 7 out 5 in.

So we bring an ex manager back (who lasted 35 days, and then 37 at his next club) but after giving a good first interview and playing a non league team in our first friendly, people have already decided he is more forward thinking than Critch and has a lot about him.
I hope people still hold the same opinion should he have a bad start to the season.
And yet again we still get people criticising Critch for playing boring football.
Funny thing is I cannot for the life of me remember anyone calling him boring when he got us into the Championship.
Be careful what you wish for !

I won't comment any further on young Rob until uncle Insider has told us where to play him

@Insider
Flattery will get you everywhere. "Uncle" ?
It's more like Grandad Insider. 😉
To help you out, as ever, I think we can start by saying Rob isn't particularly well suited to a a defensive role in a back 4.
I suppose if you played 3-5-2 he could slot in at left wing back.
It looks like Appy is going to favour inverted wingers, as his predecessor did, so in a 4-4-2 i'd play him RW but he could play more central in the role Carey played yesterday
In a 4-3-3 I'd put him in the front 3.
In his youth team days he played in most positions, other than in defense, including alongside Ewan Bange in the classic Toshack/Keegan combo but he was of course learning his trade.

I wonder how many points we will get next season. I bet Appleton would settle for 61 right now! :)

Appleton's first brief term wasn't exactly inspiring, I seem to recall most of the games ended in draws, but then he had to play the hand dealt.

I remember "Voldrawmort" being his new name here right before he left 🤣. And fair enough that he had to work for impossible owners, but the hand he was dealt on the pitch was Holloway's squad, which included Matty Phillips, Ince, Dobbie, Kev Phillips, Nouha Dicko, and GTF (kind of eye watering to look up that roster: https://www.worldfootball.net/teams/blackpool-fc/2012/2/). So the feeling was he should have done something with them.

I have no doubt he's a different coach and manager now than he was then, especially after reading what was said on the Oxford and Lincoln message boards. I agree with you that it's far too early to be proclaiming him better than Critch.

You make it sound like the boy hasn't got a tackle in him. Is that right?

Lot of conclusions being drawn based on 45 minutes of a friendly. Remember Critch wanted to play 4-3-3 until he realised he didn’t have the personnel. As well as a right back we need another atttacking midfielder/No 10 and maybe a No 8 as well. Also question whether our wide attackers suit this shape and whether we can sustain four central attackers in a squad when the preferred system only involves one. Oh and there are very few buyers for any of our players. Mr Appleton, too, might find himself having to adjust.

Very encouraging reviews about Apter, but what is the best approach for him this season? Ready to be a 1st team regular? Probably not, but how much game time will the Development Squad/U21s get this season? Post Covid, will there be a proper programme of matches for them to play? If not going out on loan might be the only way to get him (and others) enough game time. Just wondered....

No easy answer that and it will also depend if we bring someone in in any of the positions he's likely to play. I think the first thing to do is give him a plenty of minutes on the pitch pre-season, particularly against better opposition, and make the judgement then.
He does appear to be impressing Appy so far though.
