I was hoping that during his time away

I don't care about Pep. He's a boring man in a gap catalogue who plays fantasy football with oil money.

The word invert means to swap. It does not mean 'to move into a central area'
I think the explanation goes back to the 1950s, when teams played in a W-W or similar formation, with the full backs as the two at the rear (more like a centre back today) and then 3 half backs in front of them, over time the centre half back dropped into the back line (hence why they're sometimes called centre halfs), and the full backs got pushed out into wider areas, which developed into the back 4.

So the reason they're inverted is that the full backs are now playing ahead of the half backs, which is a reversal of the traditional way of playing.

However, the OP is specifically talking about wing backs, so there's an argument that this line of reasoning does not apply, so perhaps using the phrase inverted to mean reversed sides is correct after all.

According to who? Some sky pundit? When I use a word I don't check how Micah Richards uses it first, as if he's Samuel Johnson.

(Smiley face cos that came across more arsey than I meant it too)
Then check how you use names - it's Lyons not Lyon.

How long can the supporters keep backing NC if we continue with our 1st half performances as in the last 2 games🤔 the
first 45 against Exeter was bad enough but the highlights I saw against Port Vale at home is sorry but no where near good enough. We knew what NC would bring and I think some forget his tactics last time we’re see by most as holding the team back. Just hope he learns and quickly or we will be off the pace. Hope to be proven wrong but I wanted Dobbie, and NC hasn’t changed my mind yet, the squad is better than the mangers tactics.

You wait, Super Jim will have 20+ assists.

He'll still be 'not good enough' and 'lacking in quality' for some though.
As will Hamilton who will still be 'shite' and 'Conference at best'.

Super Jim didn't actually find a man all night with those crosses btw😉

Different meaning for wingers and fullbacks. For fullbacks it means that they rotate into midfield when needed, when the team is in possession. You can blame Pep for all of this by the way he started it with Cancelo.
It's one thing having Cancelo doing it, with respect to Hamilton and Lyons who are competent league 1 footballers they are unlikely to beat a man on the inside to create an opportunity for a decent shot on goal or a slide rule pass to a team mate making a perfectly executed well timed run.
It's all too ponderous and intricate.
In many ways I'm with Critchley, I have no problem with 3 5 2, I'm all for dominating possession. But Ekpiteta can't be the main playmaker from the back, Hamilton and Lyons need to be able to use their favoured foot to beat a mean on the outside and whip in a cross with ease and everything should be done with a quicker tempo than last night when we are at home against weaker opposition.
A lot of people like Connolly and would have him as a starter in central midfield, on that basis is he not the ideal candidate to be the man in the back 3 that starts the play. He must be better in possession than Ekpiteta.

I thought Lyons and CJ looked a bit sheepish as if they'd gone into their shell somewhat.

Oh hang on no, that's introverted.
Google inverted and penis and nipple appear fairly high up the page, a bit sheepish as if they'd gone into their shell is an apt description for their play last night and an inverted penis!
It wasn't big, bold and proudly out there!!

As will Hamilton who will still be 'shite' and 'Conference at best'.

They were too good for the players we had. Needed a Gaz Madine to make the most of them...

It's like in cricket where Jimmy A swings it bast the tail ender who isn't good enough to get a nick.

Over lapping centre halves love it

It's actually a tactical masterstroke. Make the rest of the division focus on Marv to Norburn. They all pile into the middle to press that.

Meanwhile Jimmy sneaks out wide and Lyons advances thus beating their press.

We're on our way to 100 points and goals before you know it.

Trusttheprocess

He would have learnt a bit more

But no it's the same old negative safety first Critchley

Playing one upfront at home and inverted wing backs just smacks of trying to be too clever tactically again

I was really hoping he would have changed and the first 2 games showed promise

Take the handbrake off please
Leopards and spots come to mind.

We need to give it 10 to 12 games and see how it is. It was never going to be exciting and I think everyone ignored that after the shite season we had last season. Sadler is under pressure too, because if Critch fails, his judgement will be totally questionable.

I don't want to be too negative, what did we expect though? 4 midfielders, 1 up front, inverted wing backs and Marv as your playmaker from defence, you don't need to be a highly qualified football coach to see that is a very negative and unbalanced side.

We have a decent squad and with a few additions as good as anyone in this league and a lot better than most. 10 to 12 games will tell us where we are.
After Grayson, Appleton and MacCarthy his judgement is already questionable. If Critchley fails as well🤷

Likelihood is that he’s come back to us with his tail between his legs and if anything is playing it even safer than before.

I have no idea what he’ll think of his Villa experience but no doubt the QPR debacle was as humiliating as it gets.

I hope that with time, and support of fans (if that’s so much to ask after we start the season 4 games unbeaten) he will take the handbrake off and play to our strengths more.

It’s clear the current style and formation won’t do him any favours with those who were against him coming back in the first place.

Could be an introverted wing back with an inverted belly button for all I care. 😅

I do know Critchley is safer than a Vicar’s tea party. We’ve turned into blöödy PNE with all these 0-0’s and tossers booing 😏

He seems to be stubbornly wedded to his chosen formation. As for choosing the players to suit the tactics, one word: Marvin.
I'd suggest first and foremost Marv is picked because he's our best defender. But anyhow, consider this. Marv plays in the middle of a back five or back three. He's always the middle man in the most central area of the pitch. The ball is always more likely to be at his feet rather than any of the other four or two. Especially when we are starting to build up play again. The wider of the centre halves usually have the option to go back to Marv or out to the touchline. Marv doesn't really have that option. He usually only has the option to go to either of the other centre backs or go forward. Inevitable then that he'll be put under more pressure simply because he has possession of the ball more than the others. All that said, yep of course he scares the daylights out of you sometimes when he's on the ball.

I like Marv, always have. He's saved us numerous times with great tackles. But, if Critch sees in him a new Alan Hansen then he's got a long wait.

It's not just that he scares you but his range of passing is limited to say the least, he certainly doesn't get us on the front foot and it's all very laboured.
Don't know why we can't tweak it so that when we restart play Ekpiteta takes the right hand spot of the back 3, and one of the other 2, doesn't matter who as they will all be better, receives the ball from Grimshaw.
It's not drastic but it might make a positive difference.

I'll stick my neck out and say that Lyons is well more than a competent League 1 player. As he is now I'd put him into a competitive Championship side. I only hope that Critchley can coach him well otherwise it's a waste.

Whatever division I'm playing him in it would be on the right hand side of the pitch. That's where he has done his best stuff for us, this wrong sided wing back thing might hinder his development. Which would be a shame.

In a somewhat cloaked manner, that's what I was hinting at.

Love the semantic argument.

To invert something is to 'put upside down or into the opposite position'

That literally is what he's done. Lyons at left back and CJ at right back.

Take it up with the dictionary not me.
I object to taking it up the dictionary
