I'll admit it, I love Preston. Update.

I can personally vouch for the superb work the NHS do after a near death trauma a few years ago. Things look bleak at first, but with your care I’m sure everything will have a positive outcome.

I can only echo the wishes off all the posters by saying you must feel like you have been to hell and back ,i pray that the worse is over and Emma continues go in the right direction stay strong Mark love from me and mrs Spruce❤️.
 
Glad to hear there's a light at the end of the tunnel, it might seem far away but keep going, stay strong and focused and you and Emma will reach the sunshine.

I pray she will make a full recovery in time with no further complications.

On Boxing Day our lives suddenly changed, at the age of 34, Emma, my partner of 10 years and mother of our 2 young children suffered a brain hemorrhage and stroke at home in South Shore.

One minute she was absolutely fine, we had been putting the kids toys away and were preparing for some family and friends to come round to watch the match. Out of nowhere she said she didn't feel right, she was hot, had a headache and felt sick. I managed to help her from the bathroom to the bed, she felt like she was going to collapse and her left side felt weak, thats when I noticed her lip drooping on the left side. In the agonising 45 minute wait for an ambulance she deteriorated to the point she couldn't move or speak and at one point I honestly thought we had lost her.

We were taken to Blackpool Vic where they placed her into an induced coma and a CT scan confirmed a large bleed on the brain and blood clot. She was rushed to Royal Preston Hospital for emergency surgery on her brain, she was in theatre for over 5 hours to remove the clot and drain the bleed and taken to Critical Care. After a very scary 2 days the pressure in her skull was too much so she was rushed to theatre again for an emergency craniectomy, part of her skull was removed to give her brain room to swell.

2 attempts were made to wake her from the coma but she had setbacks that meant they had to increase the sedation but on day 9 all sedation was turned off and she gradually awoke from the coma. There were more setbacks, she had a Tracheotomy as she couldn't breathe on her own, cough or swallow and had several apneic episodes. But she has slowly improved, communicating first by tapping her fingers etc, then mouthing words, followed by writing on a whiteboard, she can briefly speak when the tracheostomy tubes are capped during physio.

We've got a very long road ahead of us, Emma has limited movement on her left side, but the consultants and physios are confident this will improve over time and she will need another surgery to replace part of her skull, but we're definitely on the right track. The next step is getting the tracheostomy tubes removed so she can start speaking properly, drinking and eating then onto her rehabilitation.

Today, day 27, she has finally been moved off Critical Care onto a Neurology ward which feels like a huge milestone. I've been waiting for this day to admit that the best thing in Preston isn't infact the M55 back to Blackpool like I have always thought, but Royal Preston Hospital and the incredible Surgeons, Consultants, Nurses and other staff that have saved Emma's life and have kept her alive for the last 27 days 🧡

Yep, imagine going through the horrific ordeal that OP went through and then also having to worry about insurance and finances on top. Imagine being in that situation and NOT having the adequate insurance to cover.

Glad to hear your wife is on the mend Highfield, can't imagine what that was like to experience. When I was very young my Nana also suffered an aneurysm and was rushed to Preston (fairly certain they're brain specialists, where Victoria are heart) - its all a bit far back for me to remember properly, but she is still about and as rowdy as ever probably 15 years later - they do good work clearly!
 
Emma will smash it mate. She can put up with you she can overcome anything 😂

Seriously though, been good reading about her progress on Facebook. She’s made huge strides in such a relatively short amount of time. Stay strong mate 🧡
 
Great that there's a positive outcome to a horrible and traumatic time. All the best to you and the family. Those NHS staff are worth all the applause they get 👍

I guess it depends what's up. The vic is the Lancashire cardiac centre and RPH will refer to Blackpool for things in that area.
 
I had a stroke in August in the evening after the Burton game. Two brain bleeds and was on RPH acute stroke ward. They were fantastic. She's in the right place. The care I received was top draw. The nurses, porters the neurology dept were amazing. This was my view but I was in the right place. All the best X.

Thank you everyone for your kind messages 🧡

Yesterday morning Emma had the trache removed which is a huge step in the right direction, the plan is to get her drinking, then eating again and hopefully the feeding tube can be removed by the end of the week.

Looking at being transferred onto the stroke unit at Preston at some point in February, then hopefully to Blackpool stroke unit at some point in the not too distant future.

She better get a move on as a trip to Wembley may be on the cards 🧡😂
 
Only just seen this Highfield as I don't come on here often. I can't imagine what you and your family must have been going through, Emma sounds like a fighter and I'm pleased to see she seems to be over the worst.
