George Galloway wins Rochdale for the Workers Party by 6,000 votes, conservatives a distant third, Labour collapsed. Of course this is the result of the Gaza situation, George Galloway ffs

I like the bloke don't agree with many of his policies but as a person yep better than half the bland nodding dogs we have as Mp's.
The way he took on the US senate was a joy to watch.

Can't see him being in the seat long with a GE around the corner it will probably go to Labour.

I was in the same restaurant he was celebrating his win against The Telegraph back in the day.

He's consistent if nothing else. Friend of Iran and dislike of America. He's certainly got an alternative view of who are allies are.

My only concern is that I'd hate the UK parliament being decided on foreign issues; especially Palestine as it's an intractable stale mate with two sides with legitimate claims, as though it has any influence on what happens abroad; it barely has an influence in the other nations of our Islands.

Stick to trying to govern our country.

It’s an interesting result…and gives more of an insight about the electorate than the candidates…

So we have an anti Semitic idiot beaten (which is great news don’t get me wrong) but beaten by another idiot who called the U.K out for its stance in the Gulf war and on terrorism in general and said he admired Sadam Hussain.

I still remember some of the charges he faced prior to being expelled from the Labour Party.

Encouraging Arabs to fight against British soldiers.

Encouraging British troops to defy orders and lay down their weapons.

He’s also anti NATO.

Just the guy we now need in Parliament preaching his bile.

Paves the way for a Corbyn return FFS another loony lefty I bet he's dusting down his resume right now.

Seriously where’s all this going to end because you couldn’t make stuff like this up. 🤷‍♂️

How Starmer must be regretting the diligence of the Labour vetting procedure: he is likely to be hectored mercilessly over the next six months by Galloway.

Can`t see this translating into anything more than an inconvenience to Labour even if the Workers Party stand candidates in seats with similar demographics, as the candidates are unlikely to have Galloways `charisma` and undisputed oratory skills.

Appalling man, and the Workers Party representative on Radio 4 this morning gave a terrible, shouty interview in which he refused to condemn Hamas` atrocities, and by omission, accepted the support offered by the equally appalling Nick Griffin.

The government must have seen this coming as they tried to bury bad news, quietly releasing the David Neal report yesterday afternoon.

Not much good news at the moment...

He's played his hand in Rochdale brilliantly, to the large Asian / Muslim population.
If I lived in the Rochdale Borough I would be cheesed off that my MP seems solely pre-occupied with what is happening in Gaza!

Worrying times ahead.

He also said that he is going to fight to save Rochdale AFC. As if he has any influence but no doubt will claim the credit when they do recieve extra investment.

I do wonder whether he could be defined as a populist in the same way Farage is.

He does play to his followers prejudice.
Farage appeals to the wider British public, which may be why he's never been elected, Galloway appeals to narrow sectarian interests, which is why he has been elected.

In this instance. There was a whole set of circumstances in the bye election that won't be repeated. I predict he loses the seat to Labour in the upcoming election, who didn't field a candidate this time round.

Tickled me that Galloway has this morning been lectured by the irony-free zone that is Andrea Ledsom, who warned him "to be very careful and avoid stirring up division in Parliament and across the country".

She fell short of adding `that`s Suella and Lee Anderson`s job`.

As if the satirists haven`t suffered enough...

Well done the Daily Mail, getting another sectarian conspiracy theorist into Parliament

PS, opened the thread thinking it was about an aircraft carrier

Where do you feel this leads? For me human nature hasn’t evolved and many seem oblivious to history so sadly stupidity on a world scale will repeat itself.

The Tories biggest weapon. That interview on Sky will go viral, expect to see him absolutely everywhere for the next 6 months.

Looking at the media coverage, it is fairly obvious where his votes have come from & why. How on earth their motive for voting for him and his subsequent appointment will help the public of Rochdale is beyond me.
Other than that, as much as I'd like to, if I say what I'd like to, I'd be standing on very thin ice!
