Intensity

Our success this season will largely depend on players delivering consistently high intensity, so winning their individual battles. That has been evident in all our better performances, for example last Saturday. That requires every player to be brave and strong, giving 100%.

We cannot afford passengers, particularly in key midfield positions. Whilst nobody impressed tonight, I felt Wright was again abysmal, apart from one turn in the box. He offers very little going forward, and defensively he is so weak. He also has no pace, so is easily played around. In many ways he reminds me of Virtue. It is like playing with 10 men, and it’s too much for the other 2 in midfield. He turned away from blocking the equaliser on Saturday and tonight he showed no appetite for the fight. I’d rather see Carey get a chance. He is still learning, but he has strength and quality, and he puts in shift. He needs a run of games.

It’s a bad night, but we have a good squad. I hope MA has bollocked them, because they cannot be allowed to drop standards like that. I also hope that MA realises that he has to have the right players in midfield. Tonight we’ve managed to make Hull look decent, when along with Huddersfield they are the worst team we’ve seen.

He looked promising when signed, yet hasn't shown too much yet. Weak and too many poor passes and weak flicks.

Yeah sat I was thinking that, if he carries on running out he puts their player off and he probably misses.

Carey has far more experience with us even if he is inexperienced still.

Although I'm not wrighting callum off yet......

Bad night after a disappointing end to the last game and tired people due to the disadvantage. Few too many of them so far.

Despite recruiting better midfield players, the midfield is still all over the place. Gaping holes in the middle of the pitch numerous times because there isn't a leader or much experience. If you're expecting a midfield of Patino and Wright to win the physical battle in the middle then we might as well give up now.
I think Wright has potential, but I think he'd be better in a wide position or playing just behind the striker. He reminds me a bit of Grandin in that he has quality on the ball but will never win a 50/50. I can't understand, in the absence of Bridcutt (for most of the game) and Stewart, that we aren't putting Carey in instead of Wright. Carey is much more physical and will get stuck in which is what you need in the absence of the two aforementioned players.

What we have is a 19 year old with barely any experience being asked to protect the defence, while an experienced holding midfielder is being pushed so far forward he's scoring goals, while the third midfield man is running around trying flicks and stuff in random areas of the pitch but not really contributing to the midfield battle.
In terms of the organisation of the team, tonight was a mess of Tory government proportions.

As Apples said in his post match interview we rely on that high press and closing down which is massive effort from the players. I only watched the second half but we looked v tired.

Yep looked way off tonight, right about the set up.

It may have worked a bit with high energy levels but didn't tonight and its far too weak at times with Patino and Wright.

MA hauled off Carey at half-time v Watford, when for me it should have Wright, who played exactly as he did last night. Ok, we won that game, but only because of a few moments of brilliance. Wright was still poor second half in that game and Jerry was tracking deeper throughout.

It makes me wonder if MA is preferring Wright, because we spent good money on him. He is not a player we need for a high press / energy approach. He’s very frustrating to watch and for me, not currently up to the physical challenges of the Championship.

It’s a crucial time for us to the WC break and we need to be on it in every position.

I’d also be playing carey instead of Wright on Saturday at least for the 1st 45 and see how he does. To me carey seems to put a shift in

Bridcutt will play on Saturday with Patino and one other. Probably Dougall as Appy seems to rate him. Wright and Carey would be decent options off the bench. We can't be any worse than last night

One thing does stand out
Bridcutt was a great signing
If we can get Stuart fit and alternate the 2 players
The younger players round them will thrive
Not sure we’ll ever see Stewart again. I don’t know what it is but something doesn’t seem right.

So Wright is the new scapegoat

** great
No Phil, but we will need to be strong in every position. It may be that his time will come, but right now he cannot be part of a 3 man midfield, because he doesn’t do enough offensively to compensate for his defensive weakness and lack of pace.

I saw Wright make his Pool debut for the Development team and he played somewhat similar to your description of his performance against Hull.
It was very tempting to write him off but having watched him play first team football subsequently I can see he has ability.
Comparing him to Carey, as I posted a few days ago, when he played for the Development team he looked very good.
BUT your description of Wright's performance on Wednesday could apply equally to some of Carey's previous starts for the first team so I'm not quite sure why you are so quick to take against one but not the other.
I do admit to being surprised why we have seen so little of Carey recently and it makes me wonder if he's not impressing in training?
That of course is pure speculation on my part.

Not so much taking against him, but currently he’s not offering anything. Against Watford we had Jerry overtaking Wright when trying to get back behind the ball. He was similarly poor last night and on Saturday his lack of bravery to block the shot wasn’t good. He’s got to improve his game as there is no hiding place in a Championship midfield.

When Carey got injured last season he was strong in midfield, prepared to get stuck in when needed, but also with some quality. He’s come from non-league and has started what, 15 pro games, so he’s got lots of scope and needs game time. Wright on the other hand was at a PL club and has a lot more pro games when on loan.

I really hope Wright can develop, as we’ve clearly spent good money on him.

It does seem a strange situation and I think Critchley departing may be part of it. He had a "stress" fracture but we don't know where he is with his fitness. Then bizarrely he was called up by Jamaica? Disappointing doesn't really cover it because he is one player we could really do with playing a part this season. Just seems to be running his contract down and concentrating on his business interests.

And what does Carey, the avftt messiah, bring to the table?

He’s only ever played in 23 pro matches, most as a sub. He had a bad injury and hasn’t had much regular game time since. At the time of his injury he was showing plenty of ability in a 2 man midfield.

I’m not saying he’s the messiah, but he’ll certainly offer more of a physical presence.
