January 2024 Transfer thread.

Ali Al-Hamadi at AFC Wimbledon looks a very decent young prospect, plenty of pace and an eye for goal. Iraqi international, came here as a refugee as a young child before picking up a thick scouse accent. 18 months left on contract but not likely to be on much money. Possibly worth a look next summer rather than this window.

"It will be a blow to lose Apter this winter with him due to return to Blackpool."
I can see your point but at the moment his development is working well at Tranmere. He would be down the pecking order here and would only feature if we had a number of injuries. Yes that could happen but if it didn't (hopefully the most likely scenario) his development would be put on hold somewhat. Next season could be his time particularly if we don't have Dembele,

He might not be down the pecking order. He can play left right and 10 for starters .

Weir & Tharme need opportunity at another club for their own development, I think another player will leave for pastures new, not sure who that will be. So 3 out and 2 in. I’m of the opinion we leave Apter at Tranmere for him to develop further. Another player in as a winger option would be my choice.

Weir is not our player, he is own loan from Brighton. We have to make a decision on Apter because he is out of contract in the summer. On that basis we should take him back and give him a chance. We may still be in the FA Cup and the EFL Trophy and he is a ready made replacement for Dembele if he gets injured or needs a rest.

Madness to leave Apter at Tranmere IMO! Use him or lose him. The only other player we have with his skill level is Dembele. One injury would screw us up.
I couldn't disagree more if i'm honest - best thing for his development is to keep playing week in week out even if it's at a league 2 team.

He's absolutely got potential, but I don't think he's shown enough yet at Tranmere that he comes back as a guaranteed player in the team. He could come back and get 15-20 minutes and the odd cup game, but what we should be doing is looking for him to be a contributor from next season onwards with a bigger role and the best way to do that is leave him where he is.

Same thing with Casey last year, could he have played a role for us - yes. Is he a better player now from having played week in week out, undoubtedly.

Well I couldn't disagree more either. Attacking players are different from defenders for one thing. We only have Dembele who can play that role and he is a 20 year old kid who gets kicked all game every game. It would be foolish to put all our eggs in his basket, it's a tough relentless season. He has quickly become a top L2 player. And if his contract is up in the summer he needs to play for us to persuade him not to walk away in the summer.

Sending Weir back and recalling Apter seems a logical and financial no-brainer. I appreciate they are slightly different players but one is probably costing us a fair wedge and hasn't shown much promise, the other is our player and doing very well in L2. Regardless of the Apter decision I'd send Weir back if he can't make a meaningful impact between now and January.

I'd bring Apter back in 2 circumstances:-

1.) Tit Brest recall Dembele
2.) We can't bring someone better in

A young player out on loan ? Whats the difference between an Attacking player and a defender? Also
dont the club have an option on Apter.

Central defenders generally develop later. You don't tend to have 20 year olds in central defence. Plus Casey had played less than 10 senior games before he went to FGR. Apter now has nearly 70 senior appearances. And we don't have similar cover for Dembele. And Apter is already going really well in L2. I think we do have an option on him tbf. But he can certainly play a very useful part in the second half of our season, IMO. And he is our player.

When we’ve took Dembele off we’ve had CJ Hamilton put in his position which isn’t a great option at all with his back to goal.

Apter would be a very logical recall or a suitable alternative on loan or permanently.

Recall?

I thought the Loan was only until January anyway?

Cheers I did not realise he was at Tranmere aged 8 until leaving aged 15. It does state until January and then he comes back unless another loan is arranged. Bring him back for January then loan him back if we decide we don't need him, but extend his contract first.

What am I asking for I’ve just stated a fact, he has been playing with an injury, they gave him an injection to help settle and rest this past week ?

There was interest in Gabriel before his last injury, maybe his absence today means he will be joining Dougall and Marv
on leaving at the beginning of January.

Or maybe he’s just another player who’s subject to the Tinkerman’s totally irrational team changes.

He was on the bench and dropped out last minute due to illness

Or maybe an offer has come in for him before the start of the match and they don't want to risk him. All the players that were
capable of playing in the championship suddenly get rested, go missing get ill just before the transfer window opens.

It’s not about signings. It’s about a manager recognizing what he has in his squad and getting the best out of them. Get new players in and play them out of position or starve them if service and support and what have you accomplished?
