League One pair Fleetwood Town and Blackpool are in talks to sign former Bolton Wanderers midfielder on a free transfer, Football Insider understands.

The 28-year-old is currently without a club after leaving the Trotters when his contract expired at the end of June.

3 goals from 253 appearances - fair enough he is a defensive midfielder but I think we can safely say he wouldn't be the answer to our shortage of goals.

No thanks, rather have someone younger, and hasn't just been relegated from the league we're in. If we were to sign an older player I'd want someone with leadership qualities that can help the younger players on and off the pitch.

28 is no age for a modern footballer, has extensive championship experience with Blackburn and was Rovers club captain so clearly has decent leadership qualities.

We cant just sign young lads, we need experience to go with them.

As for curing the goal shortage, that really isn't why we'd be interested (assuming we are)

The same source put the same rubbish rumour around a couple of months ago. Probably an agent trying to drum up some interest when Bolton released him then and particularly when Dunn was still here and he would have known him from their Blackburn days

We need a defensive midfielder after Spearing left so why not we haven't got anyone I see in the squad who can play there(not Virtue).
As to goals unless he takes the pens like Jay did why would a player who plays in that position get on the score sheet?

Have to agree with poolseasider. We definitely need someone with experience as a leader and who can hold the ball and disrupt the opposition in midfield. Goals from that sort of player are rarely plentiful.. On paper Lowe looks a reasonable fit and if we are genuinely interested I wouldn't mind. However we are in the silly period with agents casting about. I would still keep some of our powder dry until the main bit of the Championship is finished - nearly there.

I think we can do better than him. Even Bolton did not want to retain him, so he can't have performed well in an inexperienced and weakened squad last season. He suould have been one of their best players, based on his experience

It's never as simple as he was at so-and-so and such-and-such happened to them so he'll be good/bad. None of our Prem team would have been thought to be good enough for the Championship.

If Lowe brings to the team some of what Critchley wants in his midfield, he could be a good signing. He has plenty of experience and we're not gonna sign anyone who has everything.

absolutely agree 100%.

To say not to sign someone because they were in a team relegated out of Division 3* is beyond all logic as well. Baptiste got relegated from Division 4* into non-league with Mansfield. The rest is history.

*For our younger readers, the terms Division 3 & 4 were used pre-1992. Just before football was invented, probably.

As good as spearing, three years younger and will command less wages

There will be a lot of players searching for employment this summer as clubs try to cut costs several of whom may
be good enough to take on Spearings role

Having seen very little of him I don’t know wether he’s better than Spearing. Although, he is 6 foot, which would make a massive impact in this very physical league. Jay was 5’6 ish

No one really knows and he may be brilliant, but I doubt it. I know a couple of Bolton fans who have seen both Lowe and Spearing many times. They both say Spearing is better. It is also interesting that Bolton themselves are interested in re-signing Spearing, but weren't interested in keeping Lowe.

It doesn't work like that in football Pete players don't always cut it at clubs but at others become one of their better ones.
Managers have favourites also but Critch won't so its a fresh start.

We need this type of player he's going to be fairly cheap so don't see the problem all this going for Championship footballers is going to cost us fortunes with wages so we are doing the right thing at mo because who knows what our crowds will be when we go back.

Absolutely spot on - just watch how Wycombe got promoted and height and strength was definitely not our forte last season.

Why not? Free transfer, experienced and the type of player we need. Although I’d bring in a other defensive midfielder as well as him too. Don’t get the comment about him not solving our problems going forward. We’ve already signed 2 attacking players already, close to signing Yates and I’m sure we’ll get a couple of wingers/attackers in on loan later in the window. People are so negative 🙄

Correct we've signed three attack minded players who are quick good on the ball and use both feet someone has to to the dirty work behind or you'll just be open for the counter.

I suspect being him released by Bolton will be much more about them cutting their financial cloth and having to release him than any reflection on his performance. From the limited stuff I can find he seems a decent player of the type that we need to replace Spearing. Someone with bite, leadership and experience. Scoring goals is not something we need from a player in defensive midfield. If we aren't in for Lowe then we surely have to be looking for someone of that type, and I'm sure we are.

Yep. Just because a player is “released” doesn’t mean the club don’t rate him or wouldn’t want to keep him, sometimes it’s just not feasible to offer a new contract especially after relegation to league 2. I’d bring in Lowe as well as another defensive midfielder and then 2 more attacking minded central midfielders (maybe make use of loans for 1 or 2 of those).

Ruling out a 28 year old defensive midfielder due to him supposedly being past it and not scoring enough goals makes me thankful Critchley and Johnson are in charge of recruitment and not some of the contributors to this message board.

Yeah it's not like Spearing was a fish out of water with us. Sometimes players and clubs just move on.

I think Yates is anything but a done deal. Do not count your chickens!

Signed for Salford City today.

They seem to be the League two version of ourselves. Although they’re getting done experience at the back in first. Also signed Ton Clarke, think they’re be paying big wages for that level.
