Seemed to have a lot of critics early on in the season but haven’t seen much praise of him really which is ridiculous considering he’s been a big part of our improvement.
For me, Jerry epitomises everything we’re trying to do at the club. I, like many others thought the clubs general recruitment policy in the summer of looking to league 2 for players ready to make the jump was a good one. I’ve been critical of some of their choices in terms of bringing in players, particularly from the last January window, but players like Yates, CJ and Ekpiteta really look to be good signings.
The most exciting part is there’s still plenty of room for all 3 of these players to improve. But that’s why I support the process the club is trying to embark on. I’ve been a big fan of Yates all season because of his work rate and unselfishness.
Compare him to Hardie and and Nuttall who didn’t hit the heights at all last season. It looked like it could turn out the same for Jerry at the start of the season, but the one key difference is right from the first game you could see this was a player determined to improve and contribute even without his goals. And that’s what he’s done. Watching some of our goals from early in the season, you’ll notice Yates is involved in most of them. Whether it’s a clever run, a nice touch to keep the flow of an attacking move going, or a direct assist, he was constantly showing signs of a player integral to our long term plans.
I’m not saying he’s not had bad games, or missed some chances he should’ve buried, but the fact he came in with all these admirable attributes and has gradually began to supply goals in a more consistent fashion as the season has continued makes him one of my favourite players. Combine this with the fact he’s shown he can score against the big sides in this division, such as Peterborough, Hull (twice), as well as a goal against premier league opposition last weekend, and I think it’s obvious why I think he deserves more credit.
There’s been a lot of talk of how we need another striker in this window, and i agree with that, but I also think that Yates has, so far, delivered on expectations. 9 goals for the campaign now I believe? And as I’ve mentioned, there’s a lot more to his game than just goals.
