Jimmy Armfield Mural Update šŸ§”šŸ§”šŸ§”šŸ§”

FB_IMG_1657927260202.jpg

Infact just found this on his FB.

"Just finished one of my biggest pieces to date. Not only in square footage but in standing. This is one of the biggest in town and only a stones throw from the ground of where this legend played. I found it really hard painting a picture from the 50ā€™s as it was very soft. I tried a few things that I wasnā€™t happy with ā€¦.. but persevered and now I have a mural on the wall Iā€™m so proud of. I just hope Iā€™ve done Jimmy and his family justice. UTMPšŸ§”."

WTF! The whole point of the mural is to be reverential not a caricature. The "artist" has completely missed the point.

Got to say: thatā€™s much better. šŸ‘
The more I look at it I think it's pretty good. Certainly the whole piece is colourful with some great additional touches.

The face, the important bit, is now a likeness, yes not photo-realistic, which would be good too, but its great in the style and a huge improvement to the area, it's going to loook great in person.

Thousand percent better. šŸ‘
Agree that itā€™s now a likeness and suitable way to honour the great man.

But at what point does a mural become a billboard?

The only way to get true photorealism would be to print it out.

Itā€™s definitely much better than it was and more recognisable as a tribute to JA.

I strongly suspect many folk who whipped in, and I include myself, were expecting something closer to the photo than the style the artist has gone for, but it is what it is. I wouldnā€™t say Iā€™m blown away and the style isn't my thing - and a minor thing but i think the eyes look swollen - but it may grow on me. Itā€™s a piece of art after all so there will always be mixed feelings about it.

And before folks get too defensive, the artist is a pro on a paid commission, not a volunteer doing a freebie, so one would hope he doesn't expect everyone to blow smoke up his arse and that he prefers honest opinion. In fact on his own FB page I've seem him state he's gone back and corrected/redone pieces afterwards when he's reflected and realised he wasn't 100% happy with aspects of them.

Ultimately he's got a style and executed it, and for some it'll be great and for others not so much.

No two people see the same thing in art, either you like it or you don't it's a personal preference. unfortunately I don't like it. It's not what we were led to believe we were contributing towards, that however is only my personal opinion, some people may think it's wonderful and that;s up to them. as I said I don't like it and don't think it bears anything more than a passing resemblance.

He needs executing

Itā€™s a lot better than the previous version. Iā€™ve got to admit, I was getting pretty pissed off at the thought of Rigsbyā€™s head being portrayed on there, so the bloke who was suggesting that was the finished article definitely had me with his fishing expeditionā€¦. The badge still isnā€™t right though šŸ˜‚šŸ˜‰

Looking forward to seeing it in person. I do think some of the more realistic wall art that has been posted is fantastic and arguably more fitting, but at the same time this is Blackpool, the image is vibrant and fun, which fits with the image of the town and it does look more like JAšŸ‘

The eyes aren't quite right, but I like the job as a whole.

I think if anyone doesn't like it because it's not like a photo, don't blame the artist blame those who chose him. If that's what everyone wanted, they should've chosen someone who does that, or explained up front that that isn't what they were going for. The guys done a decent job in his own style. I think the problem is it was sold with a photo on the side of the building, and therefore that's what everyone was expecting.

I don't envy him, having the responsibility of painting a gigantic pic of one of the most loved BFC legends just across the road from the stadium, regardless of the fact he's been paid.

Fair play that is much, much better. Not exactly sure what's going on with the eyes though?

Much happier with that though, it looked as if it was going to be disastrous from the last update we saw!

I agree, probably the main reason I donā€™t like it is because we were unintentionally misled by the photo. But I am still disappointed even taking that into account, as you say the eyes are not right and as is usual once you arenā€™t keen on something you become hypercritical. I may get used to it in time, I suppose I will have to, itā€™s not going anywhere.šŸ¤£

Personally I couldnt draw breath but I agree with the points outlined above. To be fair to the artist he hasnt finished yet and he can no doubt turn it all around given his undoubted talent. Today will be a big day I guess and tomorrow it will be in full view.
I think it's a pretty good likeness, but not of Jimmy Armfield.

Lasher-Mural-Rigsby.jpg
Really donā€™t think that would happen

Would Blackpool fans graffiti a Finney mural?
Both would be sacrilege but there are a few braindead numpties around who may do something stupid just for noteriety, but lets hope not!

Are there any precautions in place to stop the nobbers from spraying their shit on it ?
There's a laser beam defence system and trap door activated by the smell of butter pies, very sensitive and accurate. It can also detect inbreds, so works well against the nobbers and Burnley.

Sadly the Yorkshire Seasiders are under real threat too.

I've also suggested to put in a high tech listening device, if a hint of an Preston accent is detected or any of the thousands of phrases and saved words words like cha, mooching or reet are detected, then hot tar is propelled out of pipes hidden in the grass, the fan is activated and feathers are blown at the target. The repetitive and very loud '** alert' siren is activated and the 24 hour sleep in security crew from inside the Armfield are alerted and storm out, armed to the teeth. They are under instruction to 'immobilise' the target, but given they won't take kindly to threats and depending how many beers have been supped, it could get nasty.

One of the highest ambitions of art is to get people talking. On that basis this is a winner already and it will go on. And on. And on. And on............ šŸ˜

I like it! I do think a more formal typeface for the Bloomfield Road sign would look better but thatā€™s artistic licence I suppose

Yep I think a black border there with the dot holes in the corner would be better and match, but not a big deal.

You like it ? Should have gone toā€¦ā€¦ā€¦.. šŸ˜œ
I like it, would have loved a photo-realistic one, but its vibrant and has a bfc legend on full view and I think the youth will like it. The piece on the whole is good, a decent enough likeness now.

Could say his statue doesn't look like him....

I donā€™t like it, never will, but as I said earlier it wouldnā€™t do for us all to like the same thing. Having said that I donā€™t dislike it as much as I did. If he sorted the eyes out it would improve it no end.

Letā€™s judge the finished article. Iā€™m sure it will look great.

I donā€™t think photo-realistic would have necessarily worked brilliantly in this case. The picture of Ian Curtis (for example) is pretty iconic and artistic in and of itself..but in the case of the JA image, I think it would have always needed something to lift it šŸ‘

There are different styles that Iā€™d have probably preferred I think and there are artistic ways of producing a more realistic image, but to my mind what he has produced is far better than just a reproduction of the picture we were given as an exampleā€¦And maybe that kind of caricature style fits well with Blackpool than something too ā€˜artyā€™šŸ‘

Thereā€™s a part of me on reflection that wonders if we focused too much on choosing what the image would be, rather than choosing the style it would be inā€¦ I.e. ā€œHereā€™s five different artists / stylesā€ pick the one you prefer.

Whichever way you look at it though, itā€™s a decent tribute to a Blackpool Legend and makes a big impression on Bloomfield Road.

I thought the artist said it was finished. I wouldnā€™t have commented otherwise. Ideally a little rework on the eyes, and maybe badge would be all Iā€™d say. The artist has done that with previous work so who knows. The style is definitely stand out, maybe not my taste, but certainly takes talent.

I can see it growing on me rather than it being an instant wow. Itā€™s certainly much better than an empty wall and itā€™s a big, colourful statement piece to honour a legend.

Yeah it's a good tribute, massively changes the feel of the area, adds vibrant colour and that style I do like, kind of brings it to life more. Plus I imagine the youngsters like it too.

Tbh I think we should have far more round the town, the more tangerine is shown off and more kids like to be associated with the club, the better.

Couldnā€™t have been much worse. The tower or what ever it is ( just looked at the badger on the actual photo the artist was supposed to have been working from and realised it is an ā€˜Xā€™) on the badge is at a different angle to the rest of the badge. If you cannot get something like getting angles correct, which should be fairly simple, what chance is there of getting the rest right?

There are a few other inconsistencies on the badge which Iā€™m not going to get into, but largely from a distance looks like our skewiff badge.
At least he fixed the terrible face.
The eyes arenā€™t right - looks like heā€™s gone 12 rounds with Gary Briggs - but thatā€™s just being picky.

Like most on here are saying, the eyes throw it off. They look swollen rather than squinting. Also the signature is well off. After looking at the artist on IG this is his style so obviously what the organisers were looking for.

My daughter is a good artist, and she says if it doesn't look right it's always the eyes.
