Jimmy Armfield Mural Update šŸ§”šŸ§”šŸ§”šŸ§”

I am no artist and cannot draw for toffee but for me if what the artist has produced is meant to be a true reproduction of the photo then the mural is hideous and we have been robbed. As others have said the eyes are dreadful, the badge is wonky, the signature looks nothing like Jimmyā€™s and god knows what is going on with the wording in the sign. If the mural is the artists ā€˜interpretationā€™ of the photo then itā€™s ok, not great, but ok.

The artist just needs to de-emphasise the 'bags' under the eyes to lessen their appearance and possibly square up the badge.

Overall it's very good and does our Jimmy proud.

Has the artist finished or did he just get it to a more acceptable stage for todays game? Could still be a work in progress perhaps

I may be wrong but itā€™s finished from what I understand and according to a tweet from the artist
Ah ok, weird one if so but each to their own. Some glaring errors, but that's just my opinion, as long as the majority are happy then its job done šŸ‘

Agree, itā€™s not for me which is a shame as I think it could have been amazing. Itā€™s all about opinions though isnā€™t it and if others are happy with it then thatā€™s good.

Did hear that the eyes aren't finished.

Apparently, there's another day worth of work planned.

You should have been the first call. You're a million times better than whoever did this.
Kind of you but Im sure the guys will have checked the artists work out prior and will feel they have the right guy. By the sounds of it he's got another day to go on it so he should get there, time constraints may have not given him the time he needs perhaps, all will be good in the end I reckon šŸ‘

I did see what looked like the cherry picker parked on st Anne's Road, so maybe he is coming back, or maybe not.... but he seemed to suggest he was done.

Itā€™s good, but people expect an exact replica of the photo, itā€™s a tough ask painting that at such a large scale, obviously a lot will criticise.
For me it just needs a tweak here and there but fair play to the guy, heā€™s not going to please everyone

Looking at his IG page his style is more animated than realistic. So obviously the organisers knew what his style was. Probably should have been made clear in fundraising so people knew it wouldn't be an realistic portrait. I dont think it's awful, but it needs tweaking for sure.

Just had a look at his other work in IG, and based on that he's delivered exactly what should've been expected by the people that chose him. I feel there's a disconnect between what those who donated were sold and what the organisers subsequently went for. His style is not to replicate a photo, it just isn't. He hasn't done it on any previous work.

My view is that it needs work, but it could definitely still be made into something most people would like.

Could have been an early piece this one so hard to judge, He will be constantly evolving as all artist do (mistakes are our greatest teacher) I'm sure he wont be totally happy with what he's produced so far, he probably looks at his previous work and can pinpoint the things he'd change if he had chance to do them again.
Take it easy on the fella and give him chance to get the final day sorted on the Jimmy piece, he's clearly got talent and will know himself which bits he needs to sort. Probably a hard read for him or people who know/love him this thread tbf. Be Kind šŸŠ

Iā€™ve got my head round the fact the style of the mural is not going to be what a lot of us originally expected. Personally Iā€™m telling myself that the caricature style sort of reminds me of 50ā€™s/60ā€™s seaside postcards and fits the era of JA and the history of the town. No probs. I donā€™t particularly love it but as I said before it may grow on me. I do think the eyes have to change though, and I can see what folk are saying about the badge, so itā€™d be nice if those were at least considered for a look again by the artist. As Purdonkey says, looking at his wider work he has talent - I like his Churchill - and he has reworked pieces in the past so he obviously has that essential ability for an artist of self critique

My one concern is if you read the artists FB page there is no balance there either. The FB audience is entirely without any criticism and is the usual overblown praise that you get on there. FB is obviously never a place for honest critique, itā€™s all about egos, but I hope the artist does read this board too. And again that emphasises what Purdonkey is saying in that critique should be contstructive but ideally kind too. However if FB is the only sounding board for the artist then the mural is highly unlikely to change from itā€™s current look.

Iā€™ve not seen it myself, so can only go off the images posted on here, and Iā€™m not sure which one is the latest. Jjpool posted one at 12.21 yesterday and one at 12.24. Which is the right one?

So lee Charles said all feedback is being fed back to the artist who will be back to fix them, so the one extra days work would be welcome to improve the parts mentioned by people.

This true @Blackpool_Rox ?

Somehow missed this thread and canā€™t be arrised going through 6 pages of what I can only assume are complaint about it.

Having seen the mural for the first time yesterday, I realise Iā€™m probably repeating the same things as the previous 300 post but,

PLEASE FOR THE LOVE OF GOD RE DO THE GREAT MANS FACE!

It looks more like this.

From muppets Christmas Carol than the great man.

Very sad to see.

I donā€™t think anyone is questioning his talent, the criticism is purely about style, which isnā€™t his fault. The bloke has a certain style, whoever chose him for Jimmyā€™s mural has, I would hope, seen his previous work and sold us a pup by giving us a vote on something which was never going to happen. If they had posted along with our voting options some samples of his previous art we would have known what to expect. Although I donā€™t think anyone was expecting a perfect replica of the photos, I do think the majority were expecting some kind of representation which would be in the same style. That was what we were sold, but not what we were given.

Iā€™m not sure itā€™s possible to be genuinely honest and ā€˜kindā€™ at the same time. If youā€™re being kind, then youā€™re holding something back, youā€™re not giving a true insight into your actual reaction.

Iā€™d also add that unless youā€™re actually an artist, itā€™s also difficult to be constructiveā€¦

The best sone of us might come up with is ā€œurgh thatā€™s crapā€, but weā€™d have no real idea as to why it wasnā€™t appealing to us, just that it wasnā€™t.
Itā€™s bound to be a topic of conversation and letā€™s face it, the initial face was an absolute dogs dinnerā€¦ and clearly he recognised that himself.

We were led to believe that the revised image that was on display at the weekend was the finished article ā€¦ The artist said that himselfā€¦ To be honest, I thought it was a massive improvement and hadnā€™t noticed the issue with the eyes at all, until pointed outā€¦ (itā€™s almost like the concave face illusion, that once you see it a different way you get it).

We can talk about being nice, we can talk about hurting feelings etc.. and thatā€™s all important stuff, but ultimately it boils down to someone contracting to do a jobā€¦ Unfortunately instead of just having to please one or two people, this bloke has to please several thousandā€¦

Funnily enough I rationalised the whole thing as being in the style of old postcards or football cardsā€¦ šŸ‘

Stop being so negative...šŸ˜‚

I think the main issue is that it was insinuated that it was going to be a portrait style piece and it clearly isn't.

Getting it to be an exact portrait would be near impossible for the money being offered, however there are artists that could get very close for Ā£10,000.

If it had been made clear that it was to be a caricature then I doubt people would be moaning as much as they are.

I feel bad for the artist as he's been set up to fail with this one.
