Sorry to read in the DT today that John had died on 18th January. I was privileged to play alongside him in the U11 Blackpool Schools XI 1958/59. The Telegraph have an obituary detailing his career at Everton and beyond. Many posts on AVFTT have mentioned his early life in Blackpool. What a pity he could never be pursuaded to sign for the 'Pool.

I took part in the trials for the Blackpool Schools X1 that season but didn't make the team . Boo . From memory they took place
at Hawes Side school.
 
my first trips to Bloomers was on the Kop with my cousin to watch Blackpool Schoolboys in 62/63. Tubs Thompson in goal - Roger Kenyon Eric Curwen and John Hurst. 60 years ago !,,
 
If memory serves me right, I think he went to St Georges, as I seem to recall was a photo of him outside the headmasters room (when I was there in the 80's)
