Alan Nixon reporting we are hoping to strike a "bargain deal" to sign him, Portsmouth also intrested.
I know, lovely day.Sun on Sunday
Please forget Turton. He was offered a new contract turned it down and moved on, probably for more money, good on him looking after his family. However he’s gone. Not as good a defender as Turton!
The link I saw said he’d be given a chance, not that he was looking forward to working with him,He signed a new contract a few months ago and Hughton said he was looking forward to working with him in the first team squad. Even if Forest are prepared to let him go it won't be for a bargain deal, especially to another championship club that has no right backs!
You're misunderstanding me. I'm just saying Gabriel wasn't as good a defender as Turton, in League One. So I'd be wary of using him in the Championship, at this stage. Please forget Turton. He was offered a new contract turned it down and moved on, probably for more money, good on him looking after his family. However he’s gone.
I don't think the late timing of the contract offer to Turton helped, as the club were waiting to see which division we were in . He had apparently already signed a pre-contract agreement with Huddersfield. Good luck to him and we just move on to someone else. Please forget Turton. He was offered a new contract turned it down and moved on, probably for more money, good on him looking after his family. However he’s gone.
I suspect he will be keen to sign for us. More chance here than Forest. Higher level than Pompey. And Critch, who coached Alexander Barn Owl.I really liked JG. I thought he progressed really well during the course of the season under the coaching team's guidance. I think he has huge potential and he will get better again next season. If we do manage to sign him we could end up with a really top player on our hands. I also love his enthusiasm, especially for a loan player. He appeared to love his time with us so I guess that will also influence his decision if it's a choice between us and Pompey...
But not that much worse either, Turton also had about 6 years more experience and is the finished article, a steady league 1 defensive utility man.Not as good a defender as Turton!
Barring Ipswich at home for his debut when he and Turton took part in the worst defensive display of the season, can anyone give instances of when Gabriel was obviously undone defensively?JG is not a particularly good defender, which, in the end, is a RB’s primary role.
From memory, Plymouth's last minute equaliser at home. I think he didn't get close to the guy crossing the ball.Barring Ipswich at home for his debut when he and Turton took part in the worst defensive display of the season, can anyone give instances of when Gabriel was obviously undone defensively?
Sure, but as an under study at this stage, I suspect. At Championship level. But not that much worse either, Turton also had about 6 years more experience and is the finished article, a steady league 1 defensive utility man.
I think Gabriel has the potential to develop into an all round modern day fullback if we sign him.
So that's one but then it would seem that nobody got close to the Plymouth player getting on the end of the cross either. From memory, Plymouth's last minute equaliser at home. I think he didn't get close to the guy crossing the ball.
I'm thinking Connolly is primarily a centre back so there are probably two vacancies to fill in the squad at right back, Gabriel and another ideally.Sure, but as an under study at this stage, I suspect. At Championship level.
With 12months experience of league football, Gabriel will be on a different level to Turton. Not as good a defender as Turton!
Glad you mentioned this, I was thinking the sameBarring Ipswich at home for his debut when he and Turton took part in the worst defensive display of the season, can anyone give instances of when Gabriel was obviously undone defensively?
WAIT! WAIT!You're misunderstanding me. I'm just saying Gabriel wasn't as good a defender as Turton, in League One. So I'd be wary of using him in the Championship, at this stage.
I don't want Turton back. I just feel we need someone who can defend better than Gabriel did last season. Maybe Gabriel will step up and do that. With 12months experience of league football, Gabriel will be on a different level to Turton.
Sorry Turton for me was a weakness in our side which we must now address.
But good luck to him at Huddersfield.
No, I was very comfortable with Turton going to Udders.WAIT! WAIT!
You want to keep the experienced but limited pro and play him in favour of the kid with bags of potential?
I'm jesting Voy. I kind of agree that Turts mundane reliability was pretty important.
He proved to be a very good pacey defender in his time at Bloomfield Road. He is quality in my opinion and I really hope he signs for us…Where did he say “bargain deal” & that pompy are interested ?
Not sure about Gabriel, definitely brings something going forward but think he’s too frail defensively. Quick though and young, so could improve
I think he improved a lot defensively. He started looking very raw and by the end of the season, was looking decent both ways. If that improvement continues, I think he'll be a great asset. He has the attitude and his pace and strength in the tackle are good. Continue to benefit from the coaching that created that defensive unit (assuming it wasn't all Calderwood!) and I think he's well worth a punt.I don't want Turton back. I just feel we need someone who can defend better than Gabriel did last season. Maybe Gabriel will step up and do that.
Was going to ask exactly this. I thought he did fine defensively and can't remember him having any rough games. I'd be interested to know which games this theory is based on.Barring Ipswich at home for his debut when he and Turton took part in the worst defensive display of the season, can anyone give instances of when Gabriel was obviously undone defensively?
Quite. Turton's defensive qualities were seen to good effect in the first minute of the playoff Final, if you want to highlight errorsSo that's one but then it would seem that nobody got close to the Plymouth player getting on the end of the cross either.
The way some people describe him you would think it was one defensive error after another!
He really isn't that bad defensively just as Turton wasn't an impenetrable barrier at the back.
