Being Australian I would have thought it may be an issue due to family and he may have had to go home. I am glad the club kept a lid on things and it makes me wonder why people speculate and other easily lead join in and we then find , he is being sold ,we have had an offer from a big club ,he wants away , he is carrying an injury . Out of contract in the summer, coming closer to the end of his career, the prospect of one final bumper pay day in Saudi might be appealing, maybe the club is happy to cash in, it's not beyond the bounds of possibility.

Or, as you say, it could be entirely private, the fact is none of us know.

Serious illness with mum/dad/wife/kids/dog or similar, especially because the first 2 are out in Oz?

We had a similar situation with someone last season IIRC, plus the Bez issue that took over a year before we found out what was happening.

He signed a deal through to June 2023 with a one year option. The club activated the option so he is out of contract at end of June this year. Free to talk to clubs abroad since New Years Day.

We have been tippy tappy, pass it between defenders, across the back line and back again for much of the season, but against Lincoln he changed it and we went more direct.
