It comes from remnants of mistrust from the Oyston era AT. As a rule it usually goes player drops out of the team for the (league) games = automatic assumption they're being held back from playing another minute in the league in case they're owed money or a new deal. They can train, they can play in cups, but they don't carry on with whatever was agreed to at the start. Even post-Oyston era think Liam Feeney getting a new contract and then us getting a new club secretary soon after. The club don’t owe us anything in terms of information.
We don’t know why Kenny has been out, it could be because of an imminent move, it could be for other reasons.
But the assumption from fans that the club need to put every bit of information out is obnoxious. What other club in the world would publicly announce “Kenny’s not in the squad because he’s trying to get a move away.”
I do not care at all that they’re more quiet about stuff like this.
And if you need an example of that sort of thought process outside of our club then one of the main Reading podcast lads rang the BBC Five Live 6-0-6 phone in tonight to ask Robbie Savage if his son Charlie was going through similar currently. He's not started in the league since November, dropped out of the XI completely after 1st Jan but randomly started in the EFL Trophy the other day. He was playing well for them, isn't injured and no fall out with the manager. Savage danced around the issue and went quiet when he's normally gobby (for the show) so you can read from that they owe Man Utd on the deal based on league starts and he's trying to get his lad out of there.
For Kenny. He's obviously going, we'll obviously find out soon and Critchley's had to go in full BEZ MODE again to put a wall of silence up until it's sorted because he's the only guy who fronts up for the club. And whatever we think of Critchley he's had to be that guy a fair bit here. We can read between the lines but we only needed to know that Kenny didn't go missing for health reasons for him or anyone in his immediate family. When you do well on the pitch you build up a level of caring in people who you'll never meet and don't give a shit about as long as you get paid on time. He's done us a solid just as he did for Barnsley and his Dutch club when he came over to europe for a gig. For me he'll be remembered for Wembley and when he said after he was told not to shoot by Critchley that season because it was too much risk but he had to do something.
And if he signs a new contract now then it's the shittest marketing stunt ever.
