Kyle Joseph - SIGNED

The question now is would he be the main striker or is someone else coming in to take than mantle? Don't think that would be Martin, he'd be one of 4/5 used as and when.
I have a slight throwaway theory/guess that Martin was lined up but went by the wayside when we got a sniff that we had a chance of Joseph. Makes me think that we go for another experienced option but for a different type of player … either a number 10 or someone who can be nippy and get in behind defences (Billy Sharp 😂)

From what Swansea and Oxford fans have said, he isn't an out and out striker. He plays much better on the right of a front 3. My suspicion is that we have somone else in the pipeline for the striker role, but that's just a guess on my part.

Beesley has looked decent when he's been on the pitch, he just had an injury which meant he hasn't actually been on the pitch very often (like a lot of the team last year).
He had one good game against a Birmingham side who weren't in the slightest bit interested in being there and shipped 6, otherwise he's been largely anonymous, I hope he comes good but I've seen nothing to suggest it yet

My guess is that Joseph replaces Yates and we will bring in a Gaz replacement. Of sorts. Experienced player, who can hold the ball up. If we can find one.

Laverys best position is as a number 9 so we just need someone to play on the left probably Hamilton Critchley seems to like him

I'm inclined to think we pulled out of the Mark Harris race when it became apparent Joseph fancied the move.

If I were in charge I'd still be trying to get Martin in. But we'll see!

Critch describes him as a centre forward, for what that's worth! Think a front 2 suits Lavery and probably Beesley. Sadly it gets the best out of Jez as well 😔

Very happy with this signing, and what a good piece of business by the club.
Credit where due. Welcome Kyle.

I was resigned to Jerry leaving, but we've got a promising Forward player in immediately so no repeat of last summer's errors. I agree another forward / target man with experience would be brilliant.

Jerry apart, this is turning into a very good transfer window.

More Oxford opinions of KJ....

I wouldn't be at all surprised if he plays Championship football. As you say he is 21 and I suspect that he will improve his finishing ( he showed that at the end of last season) and his hold up play. He is a fair way away from being a Championship player at the moment though.

I was impressed with him. Only a young lad but I felt he was hard working and would only improve with more game time. He scored a few goals and I’m sure he will be good for Blackpool.

We have just spent a season watching him, he was one of our better players and I actually hope he does well as I liked him, but he has some big technical faults that will stop him going any higher than this level in my opinion, no shame in it and he can still have a good career.

Good signing for Blackpool. Would have liked him here.

We move on. Blackpool have agreed to take Joseph, but I suspect that’s because Swansea were desperate to get Jerry Yates and needed to save dosh, so Joseph who obviously wasn’t in their plans is offloaded and Swansea get their man. Good luck to Joseph, I hope he doesn’t live to regret this move, which I suspect wasn’t one he’d have requested.

I thought he was extremely promising. Great attitude and workrate, and only going to improve if he put in the hard work (as by all accounts he did). I'm sorry he's not still here, but I'm also ok with not having spent a large transfer sum on him.

Joseph has a great workrate and attitude and will do a job out wide but I wouldn't want him leading the line as his touch is nowhere near good enough to do much other than be a direct nuisance. Did alright for us goal wise last season including some screamers but also never struck me as a natural finisher and most of his good stuff was sheer athleticism and force of will which isn't a bad thing but won't mask technical deficiencies forever. I'd actually have been interested to see him as a wingback for us and said so last season as he has the attributes to play that role. Good luck to him though, with his attitude I'm sure he'll improve and I wouldn't rule out him spending a good chunk of his career in the Championship.

Agree he’s a decent league one forward but having said that he’s not your main front man to have a play off or promotion push. More a squad player, wide forward at times or part of a front two. He can improve. We will see whether he does. Seems a good lad and wish him well at Blackpool. Certainly nowhere near the class of Cam Bran though and no way do you pay money for the guy.

Also think it's important to note that Joseph said the initial interest came THREE WEEKS ago, yet no one on this board or in the media had a clue until it was all but completed.

Shows us that the club don't do leaks so we should take everything we hear with a grain of salt and that the recruitment team is very organized and has a clear plan.

If we reached out three weeks ago then odds are that we were already talking to Swansea about Yates, which means they've been planning his departure and subsequent replacement well in advance.

Very confident we'll make a few more great signings this window due to that organization and planning.

Great point AT. That old fax machine must have had a wire tap on it which leaked all our derisory offers. Great to see the professionalism.

Another Oxford fan opinion in response to those saying Joseph was nowt special....

"I'm gutted.

It's remarkable to me how easily people are writing off Joseph. The lad is 21 years old and carried our attack last season. His goals kept us up and each of them were (by and large) fantastic self-worked goals. He did all this as a young loanee at a club in disarray.

For context, Paul Moody didn't score a professional goal before his mid-20s.

I'm telling you now, Kyle Joseph will score a lot of goals at this level (and/or above). I can't for the life of me understand why people are so quick to write him off."

And...

I've made my feelings clear about Joseph previously, but in a nutshell - I voted for him as POTS and think he will get even better naturally but also with the benefit of a better team/environment around him. I think he would have got that here, this season. The system we are likely to use would have suited him and I always expected him to get 15+ in a top half side anyway.

And...

Could not fault his work rate think he will do well for them unfortunately. Probably destined for bigger things if he does well this year.

"Joseph reminds me very much of Danny Hylton. He'll get 10-15/season, not the best technique, but busts a gut, and causes other teams problems. As someone else said, his level will probably be as a very good L1 player, who could possibly do a job in the Championship. I really liked him. If we can get him for the right price, I hope he comes back. But only as a permanent."

"I'd be happy if we bring in both Joseph and Harris. Joseph in particular I think will be even better this season with Rodriguez along side him and could hit 15-20 if he stays fit the entire season.

"Joseph is so hard working and versatile, think he’s going to score more in a better team too. Harris is rapid and could explode. Getting both would be outstanding business IMO.

"I think Joseph really started to improve at the end of last season and his goal return wasn’t bad in a terrible attacking unit. I think his hold up play can be developed because he has really good physical attributes. He can press and run all day too. He’s only going to improve too. Hopefully with a year of regular football he can come back and hit the ground running. However it still would reassure me if we were bringing in someone in with more experience at this level alongside Joseph.

Sounds very promising, I particularly liked the comment on his 'fantastic self-worked' goals. Many of Jerry's were too.

Happy with this one, looks a prospect. Mentioned this before but I think we should go for Dipo Akinyemi at Ayr United. Scored 20 plus goals and Championship player of the year. Year left on contract and United willing to listen to offers. Wouldn't cost the earth either. Definitely worth a punt.
