As Boris won’t let me go to Rhodes we’re staying in Backbarrow for a few nights these week - any recommendations for a boozer for Friday night and the footy?

I think the Anglers Arms is your nearest. Not sure if they will have footy on. Might be worth calling them to check 👍

Remember watching England beating Germany 5-1 at the Anglers Arms in nearby Haverthwaite in 2001. Locals more interested in watching Coronation Street on other channel

I’d definitely head to Ulverston. Some great pubs and food. A number will show the footy but The Sun will have their big screen.

Anglers arms have got it on, bit of a recce first and maybe bung a quick handshake in at the masons 😎

You could try The Swan @ Newby Bridge, or there's a pub in High Newton (google). The Engine at Cark possibly. The Rusland Pool Hotel by the 'lay by' .Don't know if the Whitewater Hotel in Backbarrow is open to the public. Really you'll need to ring round.

Avoid Grange and probably Cartmell too( all pubs showing live Bridge games, not football).

If you are struggling I know someone who lives in Backbarrow so can ask them for you......

Not sure on the footy situation but for beer the ship at Greenodd is usually decent (on-site brewery occasionally in use)

The Crown at High Newton is closed at present for a refurb (opening as The Heft soon)

The Keg & Kitchen in Grange will probably have it on and there’s a decent selection of ales.

There’s a good few around backbarrow.

As already mentioned Anglers arms the nearest, a little further afield on the A590 the Rusland Pool, same distance the hotel that was the dolly blue factory years ago whitewater hotel at Haverthwaite, Swan at Newby Bridge, Masons arms is a lovely pub but you even have to book a table if you just want to sit outside for a beer in peak times.
For some good old traditional pubs and great beer Ulverston well worth a visit a brewery too, only about 4 miles from Backbarrow and on a regular bus link along the A590.

I watched the play-off final at the Keg & Kitchen (staying with brother in law, in nearby Allithwaite). Great boozer, TV on every wall good selection of beers. Small number of 'pool fans managed to create a great atmosphere.

Had to book a table though!

I'd certainly look at booking, I only drove through there the other day & it was heaving.
Only a few pubs doing walk-ins.
