Lancaster University Concerts - Fantastic Book

Graham Parker & The Rumour were ** brilliant live, saw them a few times down here in London at that time, the best being a double header at the Rainbow with Southside Johnny and the Asbury Dukes, one of the best concerts I've ever been to. Seen Southside more than anybody probably, outstanding live.
Would have loved to have seen Graham Parker and the Rumour. Still got the first three albums on vinyl

Remember seeing Judy Tzuke At Lancaster, after watching the support band I said what a load of shite they are, they'll get knowhere.
They were a little band called Duran Duran!

After being to a few concerts there to see the likes of Wishbone Ash and Eric Clapton, where everyone sat down for the support act then stood but hardoy moving, maybe nodding of the head and clapping at the end of the song,
, , saw the Damned and the Adverts - mayhem from start to finish. It was like being on the kop after Pool had scored! Everyone surging, pogoing, fists raised in the air. I think the Damned stopped playing at one stage it was that mental in the crowd.

Saw some weird support acts as well, a rude puppet show, I think called Mr Pugh's.

Other great nights to see U2, the Jam, Buzzcocks, Blondie, OMD, Thompson Twins, Eddie and the Hot Rods and Boomtown Rats.
Shame I missed the Undertones, one of my fave bands.

For those of a certain age and who liked live music, a trip to Lancaster Uni in the 70's and 80's was a regular feature.

A new book has been re-published - When Rock Went To College

Its a 384 page softback book with loads of concert reviews, posters, flyers and lots of other interesting stuff.

Mine arrived today, looking forward to reminiscing.

Its £30 and postage took about 2 weeks. Link below

WHEN ROCK WENT TO COLLEGE
Peter Gabriel, Beck, Bogart and Appice, plus an incredibly weird band with a Japanese type name which I can't remember now.

Only saw a handful early eighties, had to wag school to get the bus up. The Jam setting sons tour was by far the best for me. Still had loads of concert t shirts and posters from back then, moved house and went to get them from my Mothers, only to be told "Ive thrown them out" devastated I was.
ahh the jam . we must have been there at the same time.

Also seen GP live several times recently, Camden in London, O2 Shepherd Bush, O2 Newcastle, Oran Mor in Glasgow. Ace every time. Southside Johnny was also magic.

Yeah, he's still really great as is Southside, haven't seen either for sometime though, I sort ov overdosed on Southside in the 70's, 80's & 90's!! It's funny because I don't like Springsteen at all.

Mr Pugh's Puppet Theatre supported Eric Clapton there in August 1976. He also supported Ian Dury & The Blockheads on their tour in May 1978 when What A Waste was out. I saw both.

Rather bizarrely for the time, Clapton opened that gig at Lancaster with Smile by Nat King Cole.

Great thread and very jealous of you guys seeing so many great bands before they hit the big time.

Down here honourable mentions to Split Enz (pre cursor to Crowded House) at the University of London and very early Genesis at the Dominium Theatre, Tottenham Court Rd. Doobies at The Rainbow and Quo and Alex Harvey (sadly not together) at Hammersmith all early ish 70's

I saw Doobies at the Rainbow too

January 1975. Me and a mate from Liverpool spent the day walking and drinking around London before attending. I remember they had two fuck off canons on stage. It was the Vices are now Habits tour.
Brilliant show and band

Ah, it wasn’t that one it was the one in1977, I loved the Rainbow, saw some great bands there and it was only a half hour train journey from where I was living at the time. Gutted I never saw SAHB

only gig I think I saw there was New Order in March 85. Played most of Low Life about two months before it was released.

Looks like that Stranglers gig is the new Barnet away! 🤣🤣

I was at Leeds 81-84 some fine nights there in the Refec building. Cramps, the Clash, Stray Cats, Steel Pulse, Gregory Isaacs, The Bunnymen, Rory Gallagher, Grandmaster Flash, the list goes on.... 👍
Whilst my first ever concert was in Harrogate to see The Nice and Yes.....I lived in Leeds for a few years and I remember going to Leeds Uni to see Derek & the Dominoes, Chicken Shack, Edgar Broughton Band, Family, Free, Soft Machine, Curved Air, Ginger Baker's Air Force and loads more ... Happy days!

And of course that's where the Who live at Leeds was recorded. The original live album 👍
