Last Saturday's Starting XI as good as we've got?

Was just looking back at last weekend's first XI - question: Where can we improve on this team because for me bar maybe adding Hubby and Morgan for Norburn I can't see that much room for manoeuvre for Critch?

Grimshaw
Pennington
Ekpiteta
Casey
Lawrence-Gabriel
Dembele
Norburn
Byers
Coulson
Rhodes

I think you can make a few tweaks. The thing for me is we have a really strong bench but am not sure Critchley knows how to use it. He has his rigid game plan in his head and won't veer from it!

Within the constraints of his formation then there isn't really that much we can do, ultimately the players are what they are. Switch the formation up and there can be a few tweaks and movement which could change things.

That starting 11 at Wigan was as good as it gets in the circumstances but it was very clear they weren’t enjoying being on the pitch and looked like the life had been sucked out of them yet again!

I think Norburn has to be left out, he offers nothing defensively (he cannot tackle and he rarely makes interceptions) and for a defensive midfielder that would seem to be the point of his inclusion, and going forward he slows everything down and rarely makes a forward pass of any note. Almost any of our other midfielders would be better, Byers as the anchor is a must, Kady with a free role behind the front two, and then either Virtue if we want box to box, Carey if we want to be on the front foot and give the opposition defence something else to think about other than Kady, morgan if we want a proper ball playing midfielder (if hes fit. If we are going full on defensive midfielder who will break up play and just give the ball to someone more creative, then put Connolly there who can do that role I would even consider putting either Hubby (if fit) or Casey in a defensive mid role both read the game well, can both defend , and both can carry the ball. Might be slightly risky but nothing is as risky as having Norburn in there.

If Rhodes is fit he's selected then its one of Bees, Joseph or Lavs depending on how we want to play (obviously not thinking about playing defensive and negative).

if we want to get into the play-offs we have to win 5 out of our six games, possibly all six, so it has to be all out, getting on the front foot, running at opposition defenders, controling the midfield, and out of possession pressing to win the ball back from the front line. Sitting back, being solid and hoping to nick a goal just isnt going to work - it hasnt all season.

you don't half come up with a load of nonsense.

Still think we've been missing a trick with Joseph not being included regularly - offer way more than Lavery IMHO.
if joseph got a couple of goals it might open the floodgates, hes got a really good touch, holds the ball well, and similar kind of workrate anergy to yates. also got a trick up his sleeve.

Don't really think that's nonsense. Beginning of the season I thought Norburn looked exactly the CM we'd been missing for several season's. Injuries haven't helped him but overall he does slow the play down so we lose any momentum. If available Critchley always picks him & he's obviously the captain. Maybe his lethargy comes from the coach 🤷‍♂️. On the occasions he/we have played a higher tempo we've looked so much better. Lost count of how many times he passed back to Grimshaw at Wigan bearing in mind we were losing 🤬

He's still a much better option than the alternatives.
