Last time you played football?

10 years ago at 40, i would imagine i wouldn't be able to walk the next day if i played now.

Mates 5 a side team are one man short tonight and so am pulling on the shirt for the first time since I played on a stag do in 2016 .. what can go wrong 😵‍💫

I'm sure you'll enjoy it Dougall, you might feel a little stiff in the morning, that's probably all that can go wrong.

Last time I played was 15+ years ago, maybe 20.

Long ball dropping over my shoulder, I've watched it, had a look at the keeper and gone to hit it on the volley, stretching I got good contact and....snap, Cartlidge went. 2 op's later and it still plays me up every now and then.

About 8 years ago, Jesus.

Came back and played after breaking my leg. I was CH for Sheffield Wednesday fans v Sheffield United fans (it was full on), went to volley a clearance from our crowded box just as our 18st keeper dived on the ball. A clear snap was heard by all.

They carried me off, and I watched the 2nd half with a bone clearly poking out just under the skin. Eventually got to hospital, missed 12 weeks work, took me 12 months to regain the lost muscle and I have a visible pin in my leg by the kneecap.

Did ok when I eventually returned, but now at 48 I feel it when the weather changes.

1985 aged 27, just set off running and turned my ankle (bit like Charlie Patino), severely damaged my ligaments so badly that the specialist said l would never play again he was right! Even now my ankle occasionally gives way on me and l end up in a heap on the floor!🤦‍♂️

Experienced players are best in the Molby role, let the youngsters chase around!

The last time I played football will probably be this Wednesday . My hips, knees , ankles, back , neck etc will not be a thanking me on Thursday I fear

Got drafted into my son's 5/6 a side team pre-Covid.

Technically, I am shit at football; but I'm a big fella and can get in the way, make useful tackles and so on. He was delighted when I fly kicked a clearance of some fella's toe!!!

11 a-side was back in 1998 on a tour of Poland organised but a mate on a missionary year.

Wisla Krakov reserves, Polonia Warsaw youth team and a couple of others further down the pyramid. I was ok in goals, and defence, but again, size was the only thing in my favour and in a full size pitch, not as helpful. Great experience though.

5/6 years - when I was 41 - 6/7 a side here in Brazil.... first few weeks I was ok, got fitter, got better - then some younger lads starting turning up - it got more physical / competitive and I gave up ... wife was recently encouraging me to start up again but since I last played I think my general fitness has declined - a few weeks ago I was playing catch with my son... I was crouched down pretending I was in the slips and he seemed impressed be my catching skills - as I stood back up - the whole room was spinning - so I think I'd last about 5 mins on a footy pitch now!

Last night, however....
11 a side Sunday league, last played in 1999 age 30, tore cruciates and told not to play again.
Played a handful of 5 a side games over the years, but then at 50 started Walking Football, which has subsequently turned into full (Over 50's speed 😉 ) running, and today I'm walking like John Wayne as usually do every Tuesday morning !!!
But, however sad it may sound, getting back to playing again, is by far the best part of the week for me.

Last night 5 a side, play every Monday night down at AFC Fylde, good set up they’ve got there at the sports & education centre to be fair.

Not played competitive 11aside for nearly 4 years now at the tender age of 32, have always preferred and been better at 5/6/7 a side but unfortunately I have mild arthritis in one of my knees meaning it swells up a lot and with work/young family once a week is enough.

Eight years ago I started helping my son train a ten year age group team and played in their end of session games, loved it. Left it behind a couple of years back but enjoy watching those same boys playing mens games now.

October 2015 at 53 I played my last ever eleven a side game, as centre half in the Isles of Scilly annual Islanders vs birders challenge, scoring an unstoppable sliced OG from a corner in a gallant 4 nil defeat against fitter and superior opposition. For anyone who likes such trivia, the Isles of Scilly hosts the smallest football league in world football. Every weekend the Garrison Gunners line up against the might of Woolpack Wanderers for the prize of superiority across the five isles. We were playing a combined eleven from these two giants of amateur football.

The following Monday I played in my usual five a side in Wallasey and did my meniscus in the final minute. Haven't played since, can no longer run five yards, and, a botched clean up op and several cortisone injections later, I know I now need a knee replacement. It hurts every day, but you never forget the days playing, even if like me you were never that good 😗

My last 11 a side game was a fund raising for Nostell in about 88, I think I would have been 35 and got injured the previous season so was limited to managing the second team, we were raising money for ground improvements including floodlights and we had managed to get the Leeds all stars, so no way was I going to miss that even though I couldn't play the full game, Elland road was a mere 3 miles from where I grew up in Morley and was my first taste of professional football, still remember the European match's under the lights.
On the day I couldn't believe that John Charles turned up as their manager.
The players included Eddie Gray, Peter Lorimer, Bobby Collins and a very fit Mick Bates.
What a day! Everytime I return to watch a match at Nostell I am reminded of that day by a lovely photo in the bar.
Wish I could have those days back.

11/11/90 on the pitches where the De Vere hotel is now, playing for Wyre Villa... tackle from behind broke ankle and damaged ligaments... 3 ops /pins/ plates etc ... career over at 27..., on the plus side met my future wife 3 months earlier...👍

1987, at the MOD sports day. Won 1 lost 1, then onto the beers. Totally wazzed and, after drinking heavily in open fields, sun-burned and ill.

I played in the Suffolk veterans league until about 13 years ago, but had to give up as groin and hamstrings kept going. I thought it was all over until January this year, when I started walking football in Garstang twice a week. Absolutely love it, surprisingly tiring and fiercely competitive.

11 a side. 2017 in Bavaria. Got to the 92nd minute and pulled my hamstring, lunging to block. Deverstated, so wanted to complete the whole match. It was 15 years after my first game on the same ground. Wondering whether the boots go in the charity bag.

40 plus yrs age for Scotish n Newcastle Breweries In Chorley Saturday league. After game refreshments were good 🍺

Broke my leg in 4 places still playing at a decent level here, 9 months on crutches and another 3 with one crutch, took about 2 years to get over it, came back and played a few games just to get over the mental side and called it quits, i'd get too frustrated to play now as i'd be crap. But i get my kick out of coaching as I run an academy now.

Never let the boots go.... Mine are still in the garage, very dusty, but one day eh? One day?

I'm guessing about 25 years ago for BASIL v Glasgow Celtic on Wormwood Scrubs pitches. Scored the winner in a 1-0 win from a corner!!!

3 weeks ago we played an hour of 7 a side. My two lads played 13 and 17. It was a.hard fought 1 all draw.

Competitively about 30 years ago. I decided to retire when I was too slow to even foul young quick wingers never mind tackle them

After a certain age I think its so much more demanding on the body. Played plenty as a young bloke but constant twinges and pulls when I've played during middle age. The middle age blokes I know are constantly on the medical table/chair. They love it though
