Lavery or Yates?

As Critch is unwilling to play both at the same time, Lavery seems to be the manager's preferred option. What does everyone else think in a straight shoot out?

I like Lavery and love his energy and work rate, but I believe Yates is head and shoulders above him as he matches his work rate but is a better finisher and contributes much more to the team.

It's a shame Carey has been injured for so long, otherwise we might have been able to play both Yates and Lavery with that more central link from DM to the forwards (at least experimentally in the last games)

But if it's just one or the other, it would be Yates for me. I've posted it before, but I think he's a clever player who we haven't used enough this season imo. I think he links up better with Madine, and he keeps the ball very well when dropping deep due to the lack of service. That said, I like both players and I hope they're both here next season.

Madine is the our best forward at championship level.
Lavery and Yates are both grafters and both excelled in league one..it’s a big step up…..which IMO is why they now struggling.

Lavery works harder IMO and runs in behind way more than Yates, who likes to be involved deeper. Lavery's pace helps with this

Yates also tends to be a far post runner whereas Lavery is near post. Yates, when confident, is probably the slightly better finisher at present.

I feel Yates needs a Madine up top with him as he struggles to get the ball on his own, Lavery certainly wins more in the air than him and seems stronger.

Lavery could play in a 3 or a 2 up top for me if the service is there (wingers that pass and interchange and a ball player behind).

I think they could work up to together but not with the way Critchley currently has us playing, it would need to be fast paced on the floor attacking football

As mentioned they both need the supply, but I still think ditching the big man and playing both together would work.
Ekpiteta is the new target man coming up for set pieces 😏
Get the ball in the deck , Believe …. And we could have the Championships answer to the old Robbie Fowler and Michael Owen partnership !

Yates. Neither have had any service but Lavery's passing and work on the ball when not in the penalty area is atrocious.

Take your pick as both have different skill sets but either way its an area we need to improve on dramatically next season, we need both a midfield provider and goal getter and we need at least one class finisher, you only have to look at the last month or so to realise that with Marv and Connolly scoring our only goals at set pieces,we are woefully inadequate as an attacking threat in open play. We've done really well this season and for me remaining as a Championship club was the first requirement which we have achieved, now is the time to plan for next season and we will definitely need to strengthen in all areas especially as an attacking force.

Hoping a ball playing midfielder will unlock the key to then both playing together regularly.

That being said, to answer the OP, I would have said lavery before his injury. After his injury it was Yates. But since lavery has returned they've both been turgid shite.

We don’t play to the strengths of either Yates or Lavery. I like Madine but he isn’t the answer next season for us to ‘progress’ he needs to try beesley out, or play both lavery and Yates together with a different approach.

Lavery for me, he makes things happen , never stops running and gets you of your seat!

Hate to say it after season Yates had last year but looks out of his depth this season, I know he is a favourite with some fans but got know where near last season levels.

Out of his depth? I hope next season he plays to his ability he has got.
