Let the virus loose

Is it time to let the virus run amok through the human population across the world. Various governments have tried different ways to stop the virus spreading and its all been to no avail. Meanwhile indecisive government decisions have not only turned the public against them but against each other as well.
By the end of this millions will be unemployed with no future, thousands of businesses will have gone to the wall and the publics attitudes to any kind of authority will be forever changed. Maybe it is now time for individuals to decided what they want to do.
I know there will be the usual suspects screaming what about everybody else, well if you have worries as long as you social distance, disinfect regularly, isolate yourself and choose to wear your mask you'll be fine. Shopping can be done at quiet times or online, pubs cafes and restaurants avoided and left to those who want to stay open using current guidelines and the morons who want to go out on the lash. For families who have irresponsible idiots living with them if they don't do the right thing to protect you kick them out on the street. They are under your roof so your rules, I wouldn't hesitate to boot the kids out if they didn't conform to house rules. Good job there grown up and being sensible themselves. I'm sure there are enough intelligent people in the world who will do the right thing and make it to the other side of this nightmare.

Have you just got back from the protest in London at the weekend?

There won’t be any intelligent people left, they’ll all be dead

Well good luck with your jobs and businesses because rumour has it we are heading into a 2nd full lockdown within weeks with no end in sight of the virus. At least you'll all have lots of time on your hands to have your daily whinges online with nothing else to do,

Been working from home since March. Makes no difference to me.

I think the op is feeling a bit fed up.

Much like the rest of us.

As far as I’m concerned it’s just one of those periods of life/work that you know only too well are going to be shite, but where you have put your head down, lean into the harness and battle through it.

Things will get better. It’s just that it’s going to take a tad longer than we expected.

Most pathetic thread I’ve ever read on here.

Two problems with this. Firstly, the evidence so far suggests that less than 8% of those infected have developed any antibodies to it and so the idea of herd immunity looks a non-starter. There is also growing evidence that some have developed some longer term recovery problems, such excessive fatigue, which makes them vulnerable to a second bout. Secondly, the numbers that would need hospital treatment would also increase exponentially and overwhelm the health systems, which was fortunately avoided in the first wave.
I do think they need to have a targeted approach to those most at risk (care homes, long term health problems, etc) but to just 'let it rip' for the general population would be a mistake. A middle road is being attempted but it is inevitably a difficult one. I certainly wouldn't want to be a politician because whatever you do will be criticised by some. If the senior scientists and medical people had total control we would have remained in total lockdown for the last 7 months

Anyway to continue the medical theme tune in to BBC 2 9pm tonight for part two of Dr. Shipman documentary. How was he able to get away with it for so long?💀

Remember James Bolam playing Shipman in an excellent drama some years ago.

To be fair to the OP, I think COVID 19 is something we’re going to have to live with for quite a while until a vacation is ready/found. It is indeed going to decimate the economy, many businesses will go bust and un-employment will undoubtably go up.
I don’t know what the answer is and neither it seems does bumbling Boris! He’s made a right hash of this..... I’ll just keep following the rules and do all I can to stay safe and look forward to when I can return to Bloomfield Road. 👍

I'm loathe to engage with this side of the board much cos it's not really why I'm here but this is my view.

A) there are countries that have been considerably more successful than the UK.

B) what seems to have been common at least for some of those countries was a swift, decisive and unequivocal lockdown along with strict border control and clear public messaging.

C) these countries are now able to go about life far more openly and with far more ease and 'rights' or liberties as a result of their swift action in the first instance.

It seems we're still fannying around worrying about the economy and still hoping for a fictional middle ground where we neither 'do a sweden' nor 'a New Zealand'

The result last time (of trying to tread a middle path) was the widely reported highest death rate in Europe (or one of) and worst economic impact.

I'm not sure it looks like we've learned anything at all and it seems we're doing exactly the same thing, if not showing even more timidity.

The irony is, by 'protecting the economy' and 'protecting our rights to freedom' we end up damaging the economy more and losing our freedoms for longer as we delay the actions that other countries have taken which have been successful, either very (in the instance of New Zealand) or more so (in the case of Germany or even Italy)

We're in this halfway house which is shit - all the work and none of the play. All the risks but none of the pleasure.

It comes from having a shallow government who govern by opinion poll and surveys as opposed to strategy. We'll neither 'let it rip' nor lockdown in a decisive way and as much as I want to condemn the notion of the former choice, the fudge and pretence that the half arsed messaging and half arsed money driven compromises around public safety will have any impact is a joke.

Imho.

I'd rather talk about Ian Gore or something tbh.

Are you sure about that?

The <8% figure is approximately the proportion of the population that has antibodies, for your statement to be true that would mean that everybody in the country has already had Covid - I don't think that's the case.

A) Most Countries have been considerably more 'Lucky' than the UK.... I'm not at all convinced that success or failure has played much of a role. People have just played the cards they have been dealt as best they can.

B) What is in common is that those countries have been lucky that they were not that badly affected for now at least.

The comparisons are utterly pointless... luck of the draw,,, end of!

A lot of it seems to just have been luck really.

Much of the European Covid outbreak was centred around the French/Italian winter sports industry, countries with close links to that got lots of cases imported early on and suffered accordingly, those that didn't have such links fared much better.

Yes, I have just checked the slides from the 21 September briefing by the Chief Scientific Officer and the Chief Medical Officer and it actually says less than 8% of the overall population have developed antibodies. The research tests surveys on antibodies will include those that have tested positive for Covid as well as those who haven't tested positive or those who haven't been tested at all. Unfortunately, it doesn't indicate whether even the 8% figure are from those who have had Covid or whether the antibodies occur naturally. Either way, it indicates 92% of the population don't have antibodies
