We already know that we have a corrupt and lying Prime Minister. A sycophantic collection of oligarchic minions allowed to break the law as they choose enriching family, friends and donors with government contracts worth millions of taxpayers money. An attitude that they can do what they like such as holding drunken Christmas parties with games and nibbles, while the unimportant citizens while people died alone in hospital, sons and daughters unable to hold the hands of their parents in the last hours, elderly relatives unable to be visited by their grandchildren.
We have an institutionally corrupt Met Police deliberately turning a blind eye to the crimes of the government

But it gets worse!
The government is now planning to:
Make protests illegal at the whim of the police for being noisy
Give the Home Secretary the power to determine what is the definition of "serious disruption to the life of the community" or "serious disruption to the activities of an organisation". Effectively this means they can ban any protest they don't like.
Make attending a peaceful protest a jailable offence,
Make publicising a protest a jailable offence
Make the historical protest acts of chaining oneself to objects favoured by suffragettes or its modern equivalent glueing oneself to the highway jailable.

They have already removed the right to be tried by jury for such protests, thus circumventing the inconvenience of having protests deemed justifiable under the law.

But that is not all.

The Borders and Nationality bill allows the removal of British Citizenship without notice at the whim of the government effectively denying the right to appeal. This sends a stark message to the British born children of foreign parents that they are different and second class members of society. It is intolerable that the Government Minister can now decide what constitutes a serious enough crime to remove nationality from a person who has only lived in the UK and is to that extent as British as you or I.
It also proposes in one of the most inhuman acts seen in British Law to make the saving of lives at sea a criminal offence and to protect government agents from prosecution should their actions result in loss of life. This contravenes not only International Law but common humanity.

But that is not all!

Now Boris Johnson wants government ministers to have the right to overturn judgements from the court if they don't like the findings. From independent judiciary to Fascism in one simple step.

But that is not all!
Removal of an independent media, the BBC has already had all its top positions filled with Tory backers,
Ofcom and Channel 4 are set to follow
Local authorities all know that to get funding from this government it helps to agree with whatever the minister wishes, or even better have a government minister as your MP.
Peerages while not freely available are known to cost a £3m donation to party coffers,

It is following the pattern of Putin's corrupt oligarchy to a tee.
Demonisation of opposing opinions whether that be Labour, migrants, the EU, or the French
Taking control of the media
Weakening of any independent legislature
Criminalisation of dissenters.

Perhaps it is not so surprising that so much Russian money has found its way into Tory coffers after all.

The irony is that the loudest proclaimers of democracy on this board seem so complacent about the path to autocracy that this government is taking us. They even want to scrap the Human Rights Act to which I would ask the question. Just which human right is not justifiable?

It's only 4 years until the next election, we can change it then.

Unlike Putin's Russia.

No it doesn’t sound good at all!

We should forget worrying about mask wearing being a threat to our liberties and focus on the real action that is rather too quietly going on IMO.

Unlike Putin's Russia.
In 2011 Putin got less than 50% of the vote. It did not matter because of the way the Russian system works.
Our electoral system is similarly rigged.
The Conservatives got 44% of the vote but 56% of the seats.
In 2019 the Conservatives got an MP for every 38,264 votes,
It required Labour to get 50,837 votes per MP.
This is hardly a fair electoral system.

Incidentally every statement in the op originates from nationally verifiable sources.

Also a reminder that the Minister for Justice stated that the police do not investigate crimes that happened in the past. Stupid, Corrupt or both?

Unlike Russia, we haven't changed our Constitution or the way we vote for decades. We even have the right to recall our MP's too.

And when we were given a choice, the majority of those who voted, chose to retain our FPTP system of a local representative for a local area, and not a form of PR.

There is potentially an argument against an unelected House of Lords, but I'm not sure that other places with an elected upper legislature produce laws which are that much noticeably better than ours.

I think there's a lack of genuine political knowledge across the people of our Islands (unlike places like Poland and Hungary whose people have a lived experience of being ruled by an actual totalitarian regime) which means we don't vote in huge numbers, nor with as much interest as some places - but I tend to think we know a wrong 'un when we see one and get more right than we get wrong.

I don't think the fine people of Russia could say the same.

Seems like you’ve scuppered a few already Cat. 😂

Anyway is it a bad thing getting rid of those pesky insulate Britain mob off the streets? 😂

Unfortunately yes. I'm sure you'll spin it but there is a worrying trend towards a more authoritarian government imo.
The trend might be to copy China's methodology. They seem to be able to control their population whilst gradually dominating more and more countries further afield via stealth tactics.

Well I guess the crumb of comfort is that come the next election the current Government will be voted out, if the rules are heinous.

Labour can them overturn all the grimness

That is unless either the people or Labour like the new laws being enacted

Ok, here’s one for you.
An illegal immigrant in this country rapes and murders someone, so they are sentenced to a lengthy stretch at Her Majesty’s Pleasure. And of course the tax payers expense. Cannot be deported because it breaches their Human Rights. You think that is justifiable?

When did this actually happen?

Well Article 8 of the European Convention on Human Rights has blocked deportations in the past. Not sure where we stand atm now after Brexit ??
