Lost swimming pools

Ivy House (Leaf?) open air swimming pool at the caravan park on Common Edge Road (end of Squires Gate Lane)
Me and my mates used to ride down there in 70s / 80s in all weathers.
Loved it.

Remember the open air pool at south shore, only went a few times, Lido once. Spent summers in Derby baths, could only manage third board, went upto top once but not for me. Had some cracking times at the Doric out door pool after the nightclubs. Thats still there though.

Did you peep through the hole in the mens changing rooms to the ladies 😂 how that small arcade with jukebox ever made any money is beyond me as all the panels were either unlocked or easy to open & flick credits on the pin tables & jukebox. I can still hear Can The Can & Rubber Bullets 😂

Lytham Baths, old and cold but family fun day on Saturday mornings was ace, as were the classic table Space Invaders outside.

Overpriced flats now, because Lytham.

When we moved to Blackpool 1961, there were the Cocker Street Baths, the Derby Baths and the Baths on Waterloo Road, (name?) as well as the open air baths at North Shore and the ones at South Shore. Are any left?

COCKER st . learnt to swim there. lovely smell of chlorine. which sounds a bit strange but its just an association. going back to junior school ay what was St Columbas in Bispham . Now Moor Park. Derby Baths. A art deco masterpiece. . Havent used a public bath in years. Might use St Annes pool next year. Get some exercise.

In case you’ve not seen it one of the penthouse flats is currently for sale on Rightmove for offers over £950k. The photos sum it all up. Louis Vuitton, Dior, Chanel and other labels absolutely everywhere together with plenty of champagne 🤦‍♂️

Derby Baths, the Ice Ring, the Fun House and skateboarding on the prom and at the Pleasure Beach were my favourite places as a kid. Epic venues to come of age and show off to girls and your mates.

Blackpool was such a rad place to grow up and I’m still proud as fuck about it to this day.

HAVE to say the South Shore Lido. Where the Sandcastle now is. Cheap as chips . Pay your pence as it was when i was a youth. Stay as long as you wanted. of course it was outdoor but when the sun was shining LOVELY.

The Learners Pool at Thames Road, where I learnt to swim.
Pretty sure it was taken down many years ago?

Lido on Dean Street, near Waterloo Rd. Used to go in Sunday afternoons and, afterwards, get a large tube of Bazooka Joe bubbly from the Chocolate Box sweet shop.

The open air baths at south shore, did they have massive wooden slides that had water running down them to make them slippy?
I know I went and I have this memory but it could of been somewhere else.

Another joke of a decision to get rid and replace it with something way worse.

Cocker Street was awful. The first baths I went to. The changing rooms were by the side of the pool.i learnt to swim at the Lido in South Shore and baths at Thames Road School.
The Open Air Baths were always freezing. Loved Derby Baths. Sunday mornings , a quick coffee in the Top Ten and then a taxi to the No.4 for opening time at 12.00 p.m

hmm, cant remember them but its a knockout was held there, maybe then. Derby had a few slides but not wooden.

I remember the slides at Derby and they were ace and I also remember, now you mention it, that it’s a knockout was on at the open air baths.

These slides I’m on about were a permanent fixture I’m sure there were at least two and I can recall some funky diving boards I think. It was such a long time ago, when did it close, maybe some older posters can confirm?

it was open in 1939. the only pool at the time with a olympic sized swimming area. had many competitions . designed by Borough arcitect John Robinson in the thirties Art Deco style. it even had a BBC broadcast studio in the basement. just found out this on BING. demolished in 1990. a stupid decision in my opinion but council coffers couldnt afford the maintenance and heating . i do remember going quite often. a cheap day out. during the war it was used by service personell for swimming and naked bathing once a week.
