Applaud him??
Not now .. not ever
Not now .. not ever
Firstly, he played incredibly that whole WC. Secondly, he took Napoli (who had never won a title beforehand - neither had a Southern team, for that matter, as Northern teams dominated) who were on a run of finishing 10th, 12th and 8th, to winning two titles and never finishing lower than third in five seasons. They also won the UEFA Cup, Coppa Italia (and runners up) and Italian Supercup.LETS PUT HIS SO CALLED ACHIEVEMENTS INTO CONTEXT-HE WAS IN ONE WORLD CUP WINNING SIDE AND HE HELPED TO GET THEM THERE BY CHEATING.
Thanks for clearing that up.Firstly, he played incredibly that whole WC. His presence is still everywhere in Napoli, if you've ever been. They're going to rename the stadium after him - someone who isn't Neopolitan, or even Italian for that matter.
There's your context.
And it's not virtue signalling, it's showing some appreciation for an all-time great. If you don't like it, you can choose not to do it. Or you and the rest of the adult babies can wipe your behind on an Argentine flag, as you mentioned you would. Sounds like a nice afternoon.
Burrachaga (sp)? Was Passerella in the 86 squad?Without googling can anyone name another Argentine player in their 1986 WC squad.
Virtually won it single handed.
Agree he cheated but how many of our players should have been sent off in that QF?
Then single handedly made Napoli champions in Italy.
Would I have loved to see him in tangerine..yes.
Would I have wanted him living next door..no.
Brilliantly put.Firstly, he played incredibly that whole WC. Why not have a minutes applause for Peter Sutcliffe nasty evil murdering bastard but what a fantastic lorry driver ?
Just watched it on All4 a really good watch thanks.Half way through watching the Channel 4 documentary on his life (on their version of iPlayer). What a life. Born in a slum, main motovation as a kid was to buy his mum a house.
He'd just been laid out having been smashed in the head by an off the ball elbow by Terry Fenwick before his Hand of God goal. He also said it wasn't planned, just happened so quick.
People with prejudice against him should watch this documentary to get a more balanced view.
Poultongirl... for the first time. I think, I totally agree with your post. As a football fan, Maradona delighted me with his skill.I get what you are saying but I would much rather applaud for 1 minute a man that was genuinely one of the best. (Not like today’s pretenders!!!) than look at a load of sheep every week bending down on one knee for a political movement.
To be fair, they weren't in the same league, footballing skills and achievements wise.Ridiculous
Not English and no connection with the Club or town.
How Many Argentinan teams held a minute Silence when Mathews & Armfield died.
Disagree completely about Mathews he was the greatest in the world in his prime 1st Ballon Dor winner and 1st footballer knighted. Mathews is equal or greater then Maradona in my opinion and lived a more respectable lifestyleTo be fair, they weren't in the same league, footballing skills and achievements wise.
Don't agree... Maradona wasn't just a "great", he was (imho) the greatest exponent of beautiful, artistic football the world has ever seen (Okay, I may be getting a bit carried away - but undoubtedly had a special football talent). Regarding the "hand of God", every other nation in the world except England doesn't feel so bad about it (and let's face it the Argies would almost certainly have beaten us anyway that day) - so perhaps with a "World" talent, we should step back and take a "World" view...and acknowledge his (flawed) genius.Moments of respect at English football grounds should be restricted to England greats and greats of each individual club in my opinion. And it should be a minutes silence, not applause.
Maradona was a great, but there have been many that we haven't felt the need to have a minutes respect. I'm not sure we should be singling him out for special treatment, especially when one of his biggest moments was a moment of epic cheating. As others have said, many England greats have passed away over the years and the world has barely noticed, and why should they.
Okay. I'm only viewing Maradona from a footballing point of view. Would I want him to meet my attractive daughter? No.Disagree completely about Mathews he was the greatest in the world in his prime 1st Ballon Dor winner and 1st footballer knighted. Mathews is equal or greater then Maradona in my opinion and lived a more respectable lifestyle
People aren't applausing his lifestyle...his football talent and achievements.I wonder how many Argentinian teams will be holding one minutes silence for two English World Cup winners....Nobby and Jack Charlton?
A great player, but as intimated before, a cheat, a druggy, an alcoholic and alleged wife beater and links with organised crime. Yep brilliant idea.
Hmmm. what you are missing is that a lot of famous people who outwardly appear to high moral "standards" actually have many human frailties...as we have seen proved numerous times in recent years. Maradona did not particularly try to hide his issues.Perhaps posters actually have 'standards', and like me admire footballers who not only have skills, but also high personal ethics and lifestyles that can be admired and used as role models for the next generations.
The fat cheating little Argy certainly doesn't get my admiration on those points.
What a strange postWhat a strange thread.
OK MAC BULLSEYE.....
WHAT A STRANGE POST
It's a game born on these Isles. Would it not put us in a good light to give 1 minute of our lives to recognise a man that brought great joy to millions of people who love our game and spread it's popularity?
NOPE!
WHAT ABOUT THE MILLIONS TO WHOM HE DIDNT? ALSO LETS PUT HIS SO CALLED ACHIEVEMENTS INTO CONTEXT-HE WAS IN ONE WORLD CUP WINNING SIDE AND HE HELPED TO GET THEM THERE BY CHEATING.
AS WE ARE VENERATING FRAUDSTERS WHO HAVE SPREAD THE POPULARITY OF THE GAME, I SUGGEST A MINUTES APPLAUSE FOR SEPP WHEN HE FINALLY CROAKS.
The 2nd World War ended in 1945. This "Little England" attitude is pointless. The world is a small place now due to the internet and technology.
THANKS FOR THE UPDATE , I WILL TAKE DOWN MY BLACKOUT CURTAINS. BEYOND THAT IM NOT SURE OF THE RELEVANCE OF THIS REFERENCE UNLESS YOU ARE SUGGESTING THAT AS A RESULT OF THE END OF WW2 I SHOULD CEASE TO SUPPORT MY NATIONAL TEAM.
He was an "icon" of our game. We should applaud that and be seen to be doing so.
TO WHOM? TO THE SANCTIMONIOUS FOOTBALL ‘KNOW IT ALLS’ WHO TELL US IT IS SO?
After all boys and girls - it's now a world game.
IT HAS BEEN SINCE 1930 SO AGAIN I’M UNSURE OF THE RELEVANCE HERE
Football is a game, not a political platform or another opportunity for virtuous signalling, so at 3pm I will be cheering on the Mighty having not knelt down and having just wiped my arse on an Argentina flag
By the way the upper case text is to highlight my responses not to be shouty , that would be rude.
A rather unpleasant and unsuitable analogyWhy not have a minutes applause for Peter Sutcliffe nasty evil murdering bastard but what a fantastic lorry driver ?
I think you should delete this post it is repugnant. Why not have a minutes applause for Peter Sutcliffe nasty evil murdering bastard but what a fantastic lorry driver ?

I guess in fairness Mathews was fond of the ladies tooOkay. I'm only viewing Maradona from a footballing point of view. Would I want him to meet my attractive daughter? No.
The "greatest" is a debate that will go on forever.
Without googling, I seem to remember Argentina had a player called something like George Brown, of British ancestry!Without googling can anyone name another Argentine player in their 1986 WC squad.
