Maradona Minutes Applause

Total Bollux one thing I will enjoy doing when I get back into a ground to watch live football is the non observance of any of the pre match rituals being forced upon spectators
I get what you are saying but I would much rather applaud for 1 minute a man that was genuinely one of the best. (Not like today’s pretenders!!!) than look at a load of sheep every week bending down on one knee for a political movement.

Is that before taking the knee, or after some Ex player who died or rememberance day or the groundsman’s dog who has died? Can we just get on with the kick off

I wonder how many Argentinian teams will be holding one minutes silence for two English World Cup winners....Nobby and Jack Charlton?
A great player, but as intimated before, a cheat, a druggy, an alcoholic and alleged wife beater and links with organised crime. Yep brilliant idea. 😒
One of the best players I've seen live. I'd applaud.

Would you boo Gazza for his post football activities when he goes?
Who said anything about booing when the simple Geordie goes he goes as we all will

Moments of respect at English football grounds should be restricted to England greats and greats of each individual club in my opinion. And it should be a minutes silence, not applause.

Maradona was a great, but there have been many that we haven't felt the need to have a minutes respect. I'm not sure we should be singling him out for special treatment, especially when one of his biggest moments was a moment of epic cheating. As others have said, many England greats have passed away over the years and the world has barely noticed, and why should they.

Only on here could people complain about a minutes applause for one of the greatest players in the history of the game, at a game that they're not even attending 😕
Perhaps posters actually have 'standards', and like me admire footballers who not only have skills, but also high personal ethics and lifestyles that can be admired and used as role models for the next generations.

The fat cheating little Argy certainly doesn't get my admiration on those points.

Hope you never cheers a Lee Hughes goal for us mate?

Edit: Gazza, George Best etc, both wife beaters and alcoholics that are revered, but that's okay because they're British 🙄 Rooney and Beckham both cheated on their wives very publicly. Hope you didn't cheer when they scored for England as that would make you a massive hypocrite if you're citing high personal ethics and lifestyles.

For me the best footballer ever in my life time better than Messi etc but should we have a minutes applause not a fuckin chance.
Getting sick to the back teeth of football having to become some moral guideline just give it a rest FFS.

So you believe everything you read in the tabloids?

All of it.... to the best of my knowledge all of that has only ever been reported in news papers when concerning any player that has been mentioned.

To be clear, I'm not against your argument. I'm merely trying to point out that if nowt is proven in law then it's down to personal opinion and that doesn't necessarily make someone a hypocrite.

What a strange thread.

It's a game born on these Isles. Would it not put us in a good light to give 1 minute of our lives to recognise a man that brought great joy to millions of people who love our game and spread it's popularity?

The 2nd World War ended in 1945. This "Little England" attitude is pointless. The world is a small place now due to the internet and technology.

He was an "icon" of our game. We should applaud that and be seen to be doing so.

After all boys and girls - it's now a world game.

A global phenomenon who inspired and influenced millions and who was a total, total joy to watch. Happy to observe a one-off applause for a one-of-a-kind player without getting upset by it.

The handball - if it had been Lineker at the other end we'd have lauded it. Owen admitted to diving for the penalty against Argentina in 2002 and Argentina ended up getting knocked out of the group; it's not punching the goal into the net but swings and roundabouts, it's part of the game and people in all sports push their luck. Sickner when you're on the receiving end but all fun and games when it's your team doing it.

Thankfully we have VAR to do away with that now, mind. A system everybody loves, causes no problems and makes our game even better. Who'd have thought that the best thing about scoring is waiting for a screen to tell you whether it counts or not?

Half way through watching the Channel 4 documentary on his life (on their version of iPlayer). What a life. Born in a slum, main motovation as a kid was to buy his mum a house.

He'd just been laid out having been smashed in the head by an off the ball elbow by Terry Fenwick before his Hand of God goal. He also said it wasn't planned, just happened so quick.

People with prejudice against him should watch this documentary to get a more balanced view.

Without googling can anyone name another Argentine player in their 1986 WC squad.
Virtually won it single handed.
Agree he cheated but how many of our players should have been sent off in that QF?
Then single handedly made Napoli champions in Italy.
Would I have loved to see him in tangerine..yes.
Would I have wanted him living next door..no.

It's brilliant. Asif Kapadia's film on Senna also so - I have zero interest in F1 but absolutely loved it.

There was quite a bit of 'gentle marking' going on during that game, BigHands:

OK MAC BULLSEYE.....

WHAT A STRANGE POST

NOPE!
WHAT ABOUT THE MILLIONS TO WHOM HE DIDNT? ALSO LETS PUT HIS SO CALLED ACHIEVEMENTS INTO CONTEXT-HE WAS IN ONE WORLD CUP WINNING SIDE AND HE HELPED TO GET THEM THERE BY CHEATING.
AS WE ARE VENERATING FRAUDSTERS WHO HAVE SPREAD THE POPULARITY OF THE GAME, I SUGGEST A MINUTES APPLAUSE FOR SEPP WHEN HE FINALLY CROAKS.

The 2nd World War ended in 1945. This "Little England" attitude is pointless. The world is a small place now due to the internet and technology.

THANKS FOR THE UPDATE , I WILL TAKE DOWN MY BLACKOUT CURTAINS. BEYOND THAT IM NOT SURE OF THE RELEVANCE OF THIS REFERENCE UNLESS YOU ARE SUGGESTING THAT AS A RESULT OF THE END OF WW2 I SHOULD CEASE TO SUPPORT MY NATIONAL TEAM.

He was an "icon" of our game. We should applaud that and be seen to be doing so.

TO WHOM? TO THE SANCTIMONIOUS FOOTBALL ‘KNOW IT ALLS’ WHO TELL US IT IS SO?

After all boys and girls - it's now a world game.
IT HAS BEEN SINCE 1930 SO AGAIN I’M UNSURE OF THE RELEVANCE HERE

Football is a game, not a political platform or another opportunity for virtuous signalling, so at 3pm I will be cheering on the Mighty having not knelt down and having just wiped my arse on an Argentina flag

By the way the upper case text is to highlight my responses not to be shouty , that would be rude.

Sorry for the double post, cocked up the first one as I’m a Little Englander who hasn’t come to terms with the enlightening wonders of new technology
