Total Bollux one thing I will enjoy doing when I get back into a ground to watch live football is the non observance of any of the pre match rituals being forced upon spectators
I get what you are saying but I would much rather applaud for 1 minute a man that was genuinely one of the best. (Not like today’s pretenders!!!) than look at a load of sheep every week bending down on one knee for a political movement.Total Bollux one thing I will enjoy doing when I get back into a ground to watch live football is the non observance of any of the pre match rituals being forced upon spectators
Oh yes let's celebrate a drug-addled cheatThat's right, lets not show any respect for anyone.
Neither was George Best.Ridiculous
Not English and no connection with the Club or town.
How Many Argentinan teams held a minute Silence when Mathews & Armfield died.
Did he get one at Bloomfield Road? Genuine questionNeither was George Best.
I don't know. Sounds like a Fess Parker kind of question.Did he get one at Bloomfield Road? Genuine question
Not 100% sure but seem to remember some kind of recognition?Did he get one at Bloomfield Road? Genuine question
UnlikelyDid he get one at Bloomfield Road? Genuine question
I wonder how many Argentinian teams will be holding one minutes silence for two English World Cup winners....Nobby and Jack Charlton?
A great player, but as intimated before, a cheat, a druggy, an alcoholic and alleged wife beater and links with organised crime. Yep brilliant idea.
Who said anything about booing when the simple Geordie goes he goes as we all willOne of the best players I've seen live. I'd applaud.
Would you boo Gazza for his post football activities when he goes?
The analogy has missed the point a bit Wizz, and at least Gazza is English, and as far as I know didn't cheat a Nation out of a place in the next round of a Major football competitionOne of the best players I've seen live. I'd applaud.
Would you boo Gazza for his post football activities when he goes?
Perhaps posters actually have 'standards', and like me admire footballers who not only have skills, but also high personal ethics and lifestyles that can be admired and used as role models for the next generations.Only on here could people complain about a minutes applause for one of the greatest players in the history of the game, at a game that they're not even attending
Hope you never cheers a Lee Hughes goal for us mate?Perhaps posters actually have 'standards', and like me admire footballers who not only have skills, but also high personal ethics and lifestyles that can be admired and used as role models for the next generations.
The fat cheating little Argy certainly doesn't get my admiration on those points.
I honestly never saw him play for us, so no. And no, I never revered Gazza or Best for exactly those reasons. Great footballers, but that's where it ended with me.Hope you never cheers a Lee Hughes goal for us mate?
Gazza, George Best etc, both wife beaters and alcoholics that are revered, but that;s okay because they're British

Fair enough matey
So you believe everything you read in the tabloids?Hope you never cheers a Lee Hughes goal for us mate?
Edit: Gazza, George Best etc, both wife beaters and alcoholics that are revered, but that's okay because they're British Rooney and Beckham both cheated on their wives very publicly. Hope you didn't cheer when they scored for England as that would make you a massive hypocrite if you're citing high personal ethics and lifestyles.
No, but which bit isn't true?So you believe everything you read in the tabloids?
Half way through watching the Channel 4 documentary on his life (on their version of iPlayer). What a life. Born in a slum, main motovation as a kid was to buy his mum a house.A global phenomenon who inspired and influenced millions and who was a total, total joy to watch. Happy to observe a one-off applause for a one-of-a-kind player without getting upset by it.
The handball - if it had been Lineker at the other end we'd have lauded it. Owen admitted to diving for the penalty against Argentina in 2002 and Argentina ended up getting knocked out of the group; it's not punching the goal into the net but swings and roundabouts, it's part of the game and people in all sports push their luck. Sickner when you're on the receiving end but all fun and games when it's your team doing it.
Thankfully we have VAR to do away with that now, mind. A system everybody loves, causes no problems and makes our game even better. Who'd have thought that the best thing about scoring is waiting for a screen to tell you whether it counts or not?

He'd just been laid out having been smashed in the head by an off the ball elbow by Terry Fenwick before his Hand of God goal. He also said it wasn't planned, just happened so quick.
People with prejudice against him should watch this documentary to get a more balanced view.
That highlights the other side of the story of that game very well. It's brilliant. Asif Kapadia's film on Senna also so - I have zero interest in F1 but absolutely loved it.
There was quite a bit of 'gentle marking' going on during that game, BigHands:
What a strange thread.
OK MAC BULLSEYE.....
WHAT A STRANGE POST
It's a game born on these Isles. Would it not put us in a good light to give 1 minute of our lives to recognise a man that brought great joy to millions of people who love our game and spread it's popularity?
NOPE!
WHAT ABOUT THE MILLIONS TO WHOM HE DIDNT? ALSO LETS PUT HIS SO CALLED ACHIEVEMENTS INTO CONTEXT-HE WAS IN ONE WORLD CUP WINNING SIDE AND HE HELPED TO GET THEM THERE BY CHEATING.
AS WE ARE VENERATING FRAUDSTERS WHO HAVE SPREAD THE POPULARITY OF THE GAME, I SUGGEST A MINUTES APPLAUSE FOR SEPP WHEN HE FINALLY CROAKS.
The 2nd World War ended in 1945. This "Little England" attitude is pointless. The world is a small place now due to the internet and technology.
THANKS FOR THE UPDATE , I WILL TAKE DOWN MY BLACKOUT CURTAINS. BEYOND THAT IM NOT SURE OF THE RELEVANCE OF THIS REFERENCE UNLESS YOU ARE SUGGESTING THAT AS A RESULT OF THE END OF WW2 I SHOULD CEASE TO SUPPORT MY NATIONAL TEAM.
He was an "icon" of our game. We should applaud that and be seen to be doing so.
TO WHOM? TO THE SANCTIMONIOUS FOOTBALL ‘KNOW IT ALLS’ WHO TELL US IT IS SO?
After all boys and girls - it's now a world game.
IT HAS BEEN SINCE 1930 SO AGAIN I’M UNSURE OF THE RELEVANCE HERE
