Marv +Williams = Problems?

Too similar in stature and style. I would play Thorniley tbh. However, I trust Appleton he is a good coach.

It’s certainly an area of weakness as things stand. I’d also add Grimshaw into the mix as another inexperienced link in our defensive chain.

I just wonder (for the time being) whether the experience of Maxwell barking orders and guidance to the central defensive pairing might just settle things down a little. Either that or we maybe need to bring in an out of contract older head.
No we would just concede more goals. The rovers game could of easily been a drubbing without Grimshaws saves. Maxwell would'nt of stopped them.

Of course he would have saved them… don’t be ridiculous … He was outstanding before he got injured and there was nothing beyond a routine performance needed on Wednesday Night.

Looking back at the last 7 goals conceded there's only one or two goals you can blame on the centre halves, if anything they were probably more down to the full backs.

I never thought he was as good as people made out. I thought our defence deserved more credit for the clean sheets in league one. he's nowhere near as good at shot stopping compared to Grimshaw.

It’s a good job Grimshaw’s a decent shot stopper… he’s been giving away at least two freebee shots per game

During the past few seasons Marv has been one of our best players and i am sure one of the first names on the team sheet. During that time he has always worked well with different combinations of central defenders. However I not sure about him and Williams together. During the last 3 matches we have conceded 7 goals which is way above our average. Marv's passing has got worse and their joint positional sense seems to be very poor at times.

Time for a rethink in central defence ?
I don't think marv's passing has got worse, i think its more a case of trying to play the ball out quicker rather than the side to side passing and prancing around at the back we did under Critchley.

Theres always a chance of that happing when you play out from the back. Most teams that do this have the same problem. Both of the Corbeanu goals were down to teams trying to play out of the back when were pressing and also we've had our fair share of freebie shots for the same reason. There was a few in the Burnley and Swansea matches.

There’s always a chance if your brain is switched off, that’s fir certain.

I know what you are saying Bruce but it still worries me when he tries more than a basic pass when he is under pressure.

Grimshaw hasn’t done enough to lose the shirt.

Also, we brought Maxwell back once before and he was crap. Grimshaw every day of the week for me.

Our defence was good for a few games and then has been crap for a few. I actually thought Williams didn’t put a foot wrong for the first few games.

The defence has been under the coast because we consistently lose the battle in midfield. That’s nobody’s fault really, we have a load of injuries and suspensions and just lack personnel.

If any change was to be made I’d go Husband for Williams but I don’t think that would necessarily solve our problems. It was always going to be tough with so many out and we need to battle and scrap for points until we get people back.

Once we get players back I can see us going on a good run.

Maxwell can't get down to low shots in the corner anymore. If I was the oppo and seeing Maxwell in nets I'd be telling I'd be saying shoot low into the corners. Lee Jones was exactly the same all those years ago.

Grimmy's problem is his lack of experience and obvs. the lack of experience around him.

I agree mate.. marv n thornley for me.. i do think williams is a good player but somethings missing in him..aybe confidnece🤷‍♂️.. not liking these goals thru the middle

Is the central defensive partnership of Marv and Williams an upgrade on Marv and Keogh? Definitely not from what I've seen. Keogh led by example..put his body on the line and raised the games of those around him. We've lost that drive and organising ability at the moment. Marv has still had good games this season but his distribution and decision making on the ball has been very poor when I've seen him. Williams looks OK at times but doesn't fill me with confidence..and you can't ignore the negatives from all those Swansea fans when you see him making a number of mistakes. I suspect Appleton will start him tomorrow but he needs a commanding performance to win over the doubters..otherwise I can see Thorniley getting an extended run. Much as I like Maxwell as a person and a pro I don't think it is time to change keepers. Grimshaw is a fine young keeper and I don't think Maxwell replacing him would steady the defence or improve the chances of us keeping a clean sheet.
