Marvin

Quality cb for this league capable of playing a lot higher I don’t know much about Pennington I’ll have to reserve judgement till I see him I do think we need one more in, in that position though.

Didn't help with the chopping and changing of DM due to injuries then playing lightweight Patino who offered barely any protection there and let's face it we conceded the most goals last Season so basically all our defence was pants.

Marv under Critch will be back to his normal self the player of the season 21/22 which is some going to beat Bowler.

Since Dick left, he’s been Pants : uncertain, hesitant, and poor positional sense. I don’t think that we are as well of at CH as most posters on this Forum seem to think.

Took a while to get over his injury, quality CB

Appleton didn't have a clue
The defence didn't have much help from a physically weak midfield
Therefore, defence under near constant pressure which ground the defenders down.

Midfield! midfield! midfield!

I'm not necessarily disagreeing with the sentiment in this post, but I think Marv will come good again after his injury. I also agree that he isn't captain material. Surely the point here though is that we have great competition for places in defence, so if he isn't performing as he should there are others who can come in and do a great job. Personally, I would like to see what Casey can do, given that he was player of the season for an L1 team last year. Suggest we all focus on what we know - the need for a Madine type replacement up front.

nope, he struggled at first without Keogh and the added burden of captaincy but prior to getting his injury he'd regained his form and was back playing very well. For me, him and Yates were our two stand out players and Jerrys gone now.

It could just well be that the o/p likes to be controversial with his views. He has form for it.

Marv is a good CB but needs the confidence of a solid partner and a barrier in front of him and although Thorniley did ok he had neither last season.

Pennington might end up as captain from what I have seen of him and shoulders responsibility well.

Instead of our powder puff midfield last season we now have Norburn and a hopefully fit Trybull or Connolly so there should be more protection.

Even if we play 3-5-2 Connolly and Pennington should help him feel more confident.

Marv is quite poor on the ball so struggled last year as he seemed to be the one trying to play out which was bizarre. Hopefully this year he can stick to what he is good at and that is defending and his pace.

Winning player of the season, being captain and playing in Appleton’s system seemed to add pressure on him but he’s still a class player.
He was fine on the ball in L1, just not so much in the Championship. He’s a Critchley signing and worked well under him before so my money is on him having a great season for us 🍊

As others have said, we were constantly being rolled over in midfield last season. Add that to the fact none of them had the pace to track back properly, except maybe Fiorini, when he was fit. Marvin therefore never knew whether to stick or twist. He was much better under Critch mark one, where he (usually) had Dougall and Wintle in front of him. Hell be back to his imperious best with Trybull/Kenny/Norbs to stem the flow from midfield.

From memory have a look at his sendings off and where they happened. I seem to recall a couple were covering over on the right.

Good post👌

A few observations from last season:

He lacked confidence
He made silly mistakes
He constantly seemed under pressure (didn’t have time on the ball)
He struggled with his decision making at times.

Sort the midfield out and put a leader with a cool head along side him and all these issues are easily resolved.

Critchley is all over this and this season Marv will be back to his imperious best.

Form is temporary, class is permanent.
An excellent player who will do well for us this season.

In my opinion, when it comes to defending, Marvin Ekpiteta was the best central defender in League One, and as good as anybody else when we were in the Championship.
Distributing the ball forward is Big Marv's problem. He just about got away with it at League One level, but has been found wanting the last two seasons.
However, had his distribution been a lot better, he would've been prized away from us quite a while ago.
