Memorable Opening Days (for whatever reason)

Obviously we have the Wigan and QPR games which stick out in everyone's minds but opening days you'll always remember?

6 August 2005 - My Wedding Day - we lost at home that day to Chesterfield 3-1 and had my first row with the missus as she said I looked miserable for the speeches because I was so annoyed we'd lost 3-1 😆

Away at Bristol City 95/96 season. We were 1 up after about minute - ended up drawing. Kind of sums up that season - being in front and then throwing it away.

Also remember being attacked outside Maine Rd even though we'd been beaten 3-0.

In hindsight I'm not a fan of the opening day - but still looking forward to tomorrow.

James Quinn after about 11seconds haha

11 seconds. James Quinn. Fastest goal of the season. Another who was there.

I remember leaving a wedding on my birthday August 23rd to see a nil nil thriller against Chesterfield along with the brides son and his best mate, must of been early eighties?

Wasn’t an opening day game, but I do remember being at a wedding many years ago and hiding behind a large gravestone in the churchyard with my brother in law listening to the half-time scores on a mini radio while they took an age taking all the photos.
Managed to get on the main shot so our absence wasn’t noticed.

I also remember watching the highlights with my housemate the next day (he was a Geordie so lower division football didn't exist at the time ;)). His first comment was - "What a negative kick off". Followed by "What a goal" ten seconds later.

Was it Huddersfield mid 90’s at home. It kicked off and the game was delayed? Memory is a bit hazy but think we got battered 4-1.
Went off in the south, we had just changed to those stripey blue away shirts and they turned their shirts inside out and got in. A load of them get paggered in the South Stand Seats/knocked down the steps and then again in the Paddock, until they got hoofed. I was home on leave at the time.

Yeah it went off that day. Loads of away fans in the south. Loads of their fans went on the pitch from the Kop to the East for some reason.

I remember a 3-0 v Walsall in 1991. Andy Garner scored a beauty that day

Leicester 2007/8. Memorable for a number of reasons

- first year back in Championship for donkeys years
- The “Blackpool Are Back” chants
- the tannoy announcing the Sir Wesley of Hoolahan would be starting after the dispute between the odious ones and Livingstone
- Keith Southern scoring the winner
- Holloway as their manager, maybe this game started Leicesters poor run resulting in his subsequent appointment at Bloomers

Brilliant day out

Home to Hull City, 2000/2001 under Steve McMahon.
Won 3-1 with goals from Brett, Murphs and Simmo, all crackers.
Went up that season, via the play offs.
Think it was Brett's first game back after he broke his leg and Simmons debut for the Pool.
What a great forward line they became.

Remember going to Swindon for Alan Balls first match. Locals were a bit lively and we won 2-1 I think. Team coach pulled into services on the way home. Bally said he would get us out of this division and he did. 😂

Huddersfield away 1970. Just been promoted back to Div 1 , lost 3 0 nil and were lucky to get nil. Set the tone for an abysmal season in which we only won 4 league games.

I remember that one. Think they had piggy Statham sent off.

A 2-0 win at The Shay in ‘84.
Two from Stonehouse if memory serves.
First game of the last season we were promoted without going through the playoffs.

I remember getting to Bristol City late because of the shitty traffic travelling to Bristol in 2002 and we lost and ended up getting 2 players sent off! (Bullock & Collins). Boiling hot day.

You beat me to it Fess! l don’t why but apart from Wigan away in the Prem this game sticks out to me for all the wrong reasons too. Talking of that season, had an exchange this morning with a Dingle mate who sent me a couple of photos of when we won the Anglo Italian and wished us well for our season in the 3rd Division. Yes he was being a little bit cocky until l reminded him that we were the first English team to win a European trophy and that the Dingles were relegated with us that season! l could hear him choking on his cornflakes and strange he hasn’t come back yet 🤣🤣🤣🤣

Great player Kevin Stonehouse RIP

The Shay remains one of my top 3 all time favourite away grounds.

And the Blackpool commentator on the match video saying, "football starting up again all over the country."

Has to be Wigan for me, too. The euphoria of winning in the Premier and sticking it to all those who said we didn't have a chance.

They did not turn their shirts inside out that was bollocks. How the fuck would they know we'd just launched a new stripey blue away kit. That was the excuse put forward by clueless Gill Bridge at the time when the club realised the error of not making the game all ticket and about 3,000 Huddersfield turned up for a weekend on the piss. They were all non football shirt wearing lads. I'd met a few of them on an England trip the year before .

Holloway wasn't the Leicester manager at that point, he started that season as Plymouth manager, up until Christmas time when Leicester approached him. Holloway was in charge for the match at Bloomfield road though. Interestingly enough if memory serves me right Ginsters pasty's were running a competition on their pasty packets to win a chance to sit in the dugout with Ollie at a Plymouth game. He left the club whilst that was ongoing.

That Halifax game was the one the Astley coachload was sent back by the police to stay on it until about 2.50pm. We'd got there ridiculously early. It was roasting hot, they wouldn't let us sir outside it even. Dog patrol, toilet against a wall of under escort, the full works.

Still at least we won.

I recall the start of the 2009/10 season, and Ollies first match in charge at QPR, 8th August 2009. It ended up 1-1 after they scored a late equaliser. We never knew what was about to happen that season, but I remember walking out disappointed in the result, but pleasantly surprised by the performance. The start of the best trip .....

Most unmemorable opening day- 2018-19

Wycombe 0 Blackpool 0

Great drinking in Marlow before and after the game.

Total non-event of a game though.

Yep that has to be my favourite opening day game.
Was Holloway their manager? Without looking I thought it was Martin Allen? Could be wrong. I know they had DJ upfront who missed a fair few chances.

1991 Walsall at home, we won 3-0. They had a former Liverpool great in their team but it was clear to see that his legs had gone.

Reading at home, we lost 0-2. We had just been promoted and they were favourites to win the 3rd tier. Quicker, more powerful and just better players all over the park than us.

Yep , it was Martin Allen . DJ came on as a sub and livened them up nearly scoring on a couple of occasions.

Just had a look and he didn’t go to Leicester until November 2007 so 3months after that game.
