Millwall v Blackpool Official Matchday Thread 28.08.21

Millwall supporter here - put away your weapons, I come in peace!

I was at the game and, having read through all the comments in this thread, I do agree that you were hard done by - firstly with the sending off and secondly by an absolutely appalling ref who make mistake after mistake which, unfortunately for you, went against your team more than it did mine!

Like all supporters of every club, we moan about the manager, his formations and tactics, and it’s no difference with us Millwall supporters. I would say most of us want Rowett out! He’s been with us for nearly 3 seasons and initially he was a breath of fresh air after the awful play and tactics we had to endure under our previous manager, Neil Harris! Since the beginning of the Covid pandemic, we have gone backwards with Rowett, and every game now, whether it’s home or away, he’ll play 3 at the back and his main focus is just not conceding goals. He wants us to catch teams on the break, nick a goal, and then defend well enough to win the game 1 - 0.

That’s why we were all scratching our heads in the stands when, after Connolly was wrongly sent off (because you had a covering player running towards Afobe, who wasn’t controlling the ball as it was well in front of him), Rowett should have changed formation! Playing now against 10 men, we didn’t need to play 3 at the back. He also should have bought on Mahoney earlier, who can run with the ball and create things! He didn’t and Blackpool comfortably hung on 0 - 0 at half time!

Have to say your goal was a little bit fortunate in that Murray Wallace and our keeper blundered into each other, falling with your player to the ground, but hats off to Lavery who got up quicker and stuck the ball into the back of the net!

Unfortunately for Blackpool, going 1 up was probably the worse thing that could have happened to you! Why? Well, as is usual when we go behind, Rowett then changes formation and I think we competed against you better, especially when he did bring Mahoney on. You may disagree with this, but had you not scored, I think the game would have ended 0 - 0. Until your goal, we weren’t able to break your 10 men down, because we all knew that Rowett would stick to his guns and keep playing the same formation, hoping to catch you on the break and try and nick a win 1 - 0.

I‘m also in agreement with you that it was never a free kick that led to our equaliser. However, having said that, I think you have to grudgingly agree that the goal Jed Wallace got from the free kick was pretty outstanding! Now were level, we start to play better, but as the clock ticked towards the 90 minute mark, even I was thinking that the game was going to end 1 - 1. Why? Because its not often that Millwall score a late winner in a game - we usually leave that to the opposition to do that! But then Jed floated over a peach of a cross and our centre back, Jake Cooper, rose high above your defenders to head the ball into the back of the net!

So, what was looking like a fair 1 - 1 result, ended with us running out 2 - 1 winners!

As I said earlier, the ref was awful, and we know what it’s like to be on the end of a number of bad decisions! We played Blackburn at home a couple of weeks ago, and had two iron clad penalties turned down, and we ended up drawing that game 1 - 1. These things happen. I’m sure this season you’ll get some poor refereeing decisions go your way, and it will be the opposition supporters snarling and gnashing their teeth instead of you. Swings and roundabouts, as they say.

i sincerely hope you stay up this season, and if you finish above Derby and Forest, I think you will.

Looking forward to the return fixture at your place on Saturday, 22nd January, next year! By that time your manager will have worked out how to beat us, and your forward, Yates (who disappointed me today) will probably bag a hat trick!

That is unless we get lucky and sack Rowett before we play you, then it might end up being an even game between us!

Don’t worry we’re looking forward to your arrival at the Seasode too and bring along all your bent officials please

Ohh, still smarting, I see. OK.

Give it up mate! Life’s too short!

If I were to harbour a grudge against all the bent officials that went against us at The Den, I’d be six foot under by now!
