Who do you reckon is our most improved player under MA?
I reckon there are a few contenders; Jerry, Big Gaz, Sonny, Thorniley. I think the new style (with creativity in midfield) is certainly helping the strikers. Consistency of selection has also been a big factor with all of these players. Again that's down to MA.
I'd probably think that Jerry edges it over the others, but I have a sneaking suspicion that Sonny could be the most improved by the season end. 👍

I think Jerry (and Jordan Thorniley) were already very good players who only needed a run of games to show it.

I think MA's more attacking style (now that it looks like it's starting to gel more consistently) is improving Carey and CJ more than the other players.

Patino's first time passes over/through the back line for CJ to run on to are just what CJ needs (not exactly breaking news I know).

I love watching SC receive the ball and drive forward as well.

I don't think it's a simple as saying one player has improved. More the team just looks better organised and players are playing better as a result.

I think people also underestimate the positive impact that losing Josh Bowler has had. We had started to become extremely one dimensional and pretty much our game plan was “Pass to Josh and let him do his own thing”…

It meant that if Josh performed, we performed…If not, we struggled.

We’ve become a much more balanced football Team recently. Lots of different players coming to the fore 👍

NC seemed to prepare his team with the opposition in mind... 442 but different players to match up opponents. MA seems to prefer using , in form players, to fit his more adventurous 433 using both long diagonal to get up the pitch and shorter floating cross to the far post. This is realising the potential of many players mentioned above.

lots of very fair and interesting posts on this thread. i'm thinking that whenever our midfield functions, the whole team does too. a fluid three in the middle can never be underestimated.

and appleton has been very good lately at playing to our strengths - i don't think it's a surprise that CJ, Sonny and Jerry have reaped the rewards individually, and we look like a proper unit collectively. it's exciting to watch, that's for sure.

I'm liking what I'm seeing of Carey recently, and I think the style and setup of the team is one that he in particular will thrive in; it really plays to his strengths. In fact, the whole midfield is just functioning much better whereas last season the midfielders were basically additional defenders.
I think MA's idea was Dougall, Bridcutt and Patino, but I think Carey is making him think twice about that.

A good point. Loved Bowler to bits and if he were back here I'd still have him in the team. But as you say, it's about the focus of the team and we've got midfield players who can drive forward and pass the ball without the total need to get it out wide. As you say the balance going forward seems a lot better.

The most improved thing under Appleton is the style of play we are playing it's honestly miles better than the 442 hoof ball, structured style under Critchley

We are creating more chances, scoring more goals and having more play in the oppositions half

The midfield 3 is key to that with runners all over the place

He also doesn't fuck about and rotate for the sake of rotation, yet is quick to make in game changes when needed

Long may it continue, for me he's the best manager we have had since King Billy

Let's start looking up not down eh

2 winnable games coming up

One thing there is little doubt about is that Jerry Yates and Sonny Carey are both improving because they are getting regular game time. Yates has seriously got his scoring form back and Carey can certainly pick a pass.

The players seem to be settled with the way Appleton wants us to play, their confidence is growing game on game and as Phil says there's no chopping and changing for no reason. It's quite simple, you play well, you keep the shirt, let the opposition worry about us rather than the other way round.

I'm starting to wonder if Bullshit Ben has one of @Philbfctrois kids in captivity to ensure he only posts positive things about the Manager he, Ben, was soley resposible for appointing (allegedly) and BFC generally.
😉 😁

Your post is uncanny BFCx3. Almost word for word what I said to friends when the sale of Bowler was announced.
We HAD just become too predictable and his leaving has allowed other players to blossom

Yes, the midfield is the functioning much better now. It feels much more balanced and is much more attack focused than under Quitch. Fiorini will have a fight on his hands to get back in the team when he is fit...

Yes, absolutely. I really like the fact that MA has the positive mindset of...'let's let the opposition worry about us'. Under Quitch it felt like we were too preoccupied with stopping the opposition playing. I'd call that a negative mindset. I'm sure the players are benefiting from MA's more positive approach. And with the results and performances improving, I reckon confidence and belief within the team is going to continue to rise....

Equally, opposition teams knew that snuffing Josh out and dispossessing him with 2/3 players around him meant we became no threat.

yep, another good point. The fluidity of the midfield is working and he's picking two forward thinking players and that just makes our threat so much greater. You could even say it's three forward players with Dougall in there as well. And they seem to understand their responsibilities that if two are pushing forward one just needs to hold a bit. And their inter changeability is a key factor in making it harder for the opposition to pick up.

Everyone!

Except Marv 😅

exactly this. i'm a big fan of a fluid 3 in the middle and, as you say, when they know their job it becomes second nature to know when to sit, cover or drive forward as appropriate.

when they're purring, it does remind me of southern, vaughan and adam - they were a very fluid 3 and made it look effortless at times. and, like southern, dougall may be the nominal 'holding' midfielder but a fully functioning midfield brings out the best of his creativity too.

as a very tidy midfielder himself, i'm thinking this is exactly what appleton wants, and i hope that we now have a template for success that can also accommodate personnel changes.

Dougall is becoming a key player in that midfield, it's amazing to think that for the first game of the season Dougall was on the bench and Appleton started with Virtue
