Name a midfield player who has retired who you would to see again?

Gerard. Can't recall seeing one player influence the second half of a CL final like he did in 2005

Kaka was some player as well, I went the champions league semi final or Man U V AC Milan he mullered a very good Man United team.

Carlton Palmer. His every second touch a header baffled greats like Maradonna Messi etc who failed miserably in mastering this skill.

Debatable whether he counts as a midfielder or not but I grew up in awe of Alessandro Del Piero at Juventus. He was sublime. Scored beautiful goals and made it look so easy. One of the last players of a generation of the Serie A which was by far the best league in the world.

Cruyff.

In fact the entire 74 Dutch side, they all class as midfielders.

(fun fact, they only qualified on goal difference for the finals thanks to a perfectly good goal being given wrongly offside for Belgium)
A few years ago I was flying BA from London to Barbados and got talking to the guy facing me.

I asked him what he did and he said he used to be a footballer - I asked him ‘was he any good?’ and he said ‘I did play in two World Cup finals’.

It turned out to be Wim Rijsbergen, granted he was a CB - but still a great few hours (for me anyway) talking to him about football 👍

I like Pirlo but whenever I watched him play on the telly he always reminded me of a slightly less good Socrates.

Socrates never played in the European Cup though, so this whole train of thought is irrelevant for this thread.

You should have told him to fuck off as he didn't pay in the 78 final, actually you should have asked him if the stories about the party between the semi and final in 74 were true.

in fairness FY8 I was saying he played in two world cups, but I can understand why the misunderstanding with my crap English!

You mentioned Socrates before, one of my favourite players of all time, especially as he paused his career in football to become a Doctor while smoking 40 a day and on the drink continually.

The Italy v Brazil game in 82 was mesmerising and still one of the greatest games I have ever seen.

This is a brilliant read…….

First World Cup I really remember, they only needed a bloody draw against the Italians as well, the French were also great that year but less likeable.

Too young for the Greek philosopher sadly.

Angel Martinez, loved him.

Gotta bring Gabriel back from Forest and sign Jesus from City.

With Angel Gabriel and Jesus, plus Jerry at the Pearly Gates, OMG we'd all be in a Tangerine Heaven.

Socrates played for Garforth Town. The owner introduced futbol de salao into the UK and brought him over for a game.
